Lake Koshkonong, Wisconsin

Lake Koshkonong is a naturally occurring lake that acts as a reservoir in southern Wisconsin. Its size was augmented by the creation of the Indianford Dam in 1932, making it one of the larger lakes in the state. The lake lies along the Rock River, with the river acting as both the primary inflow and the primary outflow for the lake. Lake Koshkonong begins 5.5 mi (8.9 km) downriver from Fort Atkinson, with the large majority of the lake located in southwestern Jefferson County. Small portions of the lake extend into southeastern Dane and northern Rock counties. After the creation of the Indianford Dam, which was built several miles down the Rock River from Lake Koshkonong, the lake has had a surface area measuring 10,460 acres (42.3 km2). It remains very shallow with an average depth of six feet (1.8 meters) and a maximum depth of seven feet (2.1 meters). The dam itself measures 13 feet (4.0 meters) high and with a length of 500 ft (150 m) at its crest. Maximum capacity of the reservoir is 107,000 acre⋅ft (132,000,000 m3). Both dam and reservoir are owned and operated by Rock County.

Koshkonong Mounds is an unincorporated community located in the town of Koshkonong, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. It was named for the prehistoric earthwork mounds built by an early indigenous people in the area. They were likely related to the Mississippian culture, which established settlements and constructed mounds from 1000-1500 CE throughout the areas of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Archeological artifacts found in the settlements show widespread trading from settlements in the Great Lakes to present-day Illinois and the center of Cahokia, to other settlements in the present-day southeastern United States.

Carcajou is an unincorporated community located in the town of Sumner, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States.The word carcajou is Canadian French for "wolverine".

The Albert and Mary Shekey House is a historic house at W7526 Koshkonong Mounds Road in the town of Koshkonong, Wisconsin. The house was built in 1885 for Mary Shekey, the daughter of two of Jefferson County's first settlers, and her husband Albert, an engineer for the Chicago & North Western Railway. It provided close access to Lake Koshkonong and the Koshkonong Place hunting lodge; it is unknown if the Shekeys, who were Janesville residents before the house was built, lived in the house full-time or used it as a summer or rental home. The house has a Queen Anne design, a popular style of the late nineteenth century, though its architect and builder are unknown. Its design includes a projecting bay on the east side, an irregular cruciform roof with several hips and gables, ornamental brackets and a frieze board with carved circles below the eaves, and Dutch gables with wooden shingles within the gable ends.The house was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 2014 and to the National Register of Historic Places the following year.

Sumner is a town in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 832 at the 2010 census. The census-designated place of Lake Koshkonong and the unincorporated communities of Busseyville, Carcajou, Glenn Oaks Beach, Koshkonong Manor, and North Shore are located within the town. The community of Blackhawk Island is located partially in the town.

The Carcajou Point site (47JE2, aka the Carcajou site, Carcajou village or White Crow's village) is located in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, on Lake Koshkonong. It is a multi-component site with prehistoric Upper Mississippian Oneota and Historic components.The site was occupied by Native Americans as late as the 1820s and 1830s, when the Winnebago tribe resided there. At that time, it was called "White Crow's village" after the name of the chief.

Busseyville is an unincorporated community in the town of Sumner, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located on Wisconsin Highway 106 near Luna Road, about ten miles west of Fort Atkinson. The Sumner town hall is located there as well as Busseyville Community Church.
