Castle Eden

Castle Eden railway station served the village of Castle Eden, County Durham, England, from 1839 to 1964 on the Hartlepool Dock and Railway.

The Academy At Shotton Hall is a coeducational secondary school in Peterlee, County Durham, England. It is a school for 11- to 16-year-olds and is a specialist Performing Arts College it was renamed to Academy of Shotton Hall in February 2011. The school has recently given through major renovation work as part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) program. The new facility was fully rebuilt in late 2010 and the former facility was demolished in mid 2011. The current head teacher at the school is Mrs Hook. Previous head teacher, Ian Mowbray, retired In July 2010.

Eden Vale is a small village in County Durham, in England. It is a few miles to the south of Peterlee.

The Apollo Pavilion, also known as the Pasmore Pavilion, is a piece of public art in the new town of Peterlee in County Durham in the North East of England, designed by British artist and architect Victor Pasmore. It was completed in 1969. In December 2011 English Heritage gave the pavilion a Grade-II* listing.

The Castle at Castle Eden, County Durham, England, is an 18th-century, Palladian style, mansion house and a Grade II* listed building. No trace remains of the medieval castle of Robert the Bruce. The historic listing states that "by 1678, Sir William Bromley owned the manor" and that in 1758, "William Throckmorton Bromley, sold the property to Rowland Burdon". At that time, "the estate was in poor condition and unenclosed, the chapel was in ruins and the mansion house had gone". Burdon enclosed the land, erected a church and built the manor house.The Burdon family of Castle Eden had their origins in Stockton on Tees, where the first Rowland Burdon was mayor nine times in the 17th century. His great-grandson Rowland Burdon III, a merchant banker, purchased the manor of Castle Eden in 1758, and in about 1765, with the assistance of architect William Newton, built the house which came to be known as The Castle. The house has three storeys and a seven-bay entrance front, and encompasses 15,102 square feet (1,403.0 m2). The central three bays are canted and the whole carries a castellated parapet. His grandson, Rowland Burdon V, was Member of Parliament for County Durham from 1790 to 1806, and his son Rowland VI was resident in 1861 and recorded in the census of that year as a farmer of 352 acres (1.42 km2). In 1881 the census records the resident as Rev John Burdon, a widower with two children and ten servants. Accounts exist of numerous ghostly sightings of his 2nd wife, Ethel Burdon, née Tavistock, who died in the winter of 1886 under mysterious circumstances. In about 1863 the entrance frontage was enhanced by the addition of a single-storey six-bayed palmhouse, and in 1893 a north wing was added. Later Rowland Burdens served as High Sheriff of Durham in 1872 and 1907. The property was for sale in late 2020, with 14 acres of land; the castle then included 11 bedrooms and 15,102 square feet of space. Extensive restoration had been completed over the previous two decades. An article about the castle stated that "the dungeon is accessed via stone steps from the ground floor and includes many different rooms that span the entire footprint of the Castle".

Shotton Hall is a Grade II listed building, formerly a mansion house, now operated by Peterlee Town Council as offices and a conference centre.

Old Shotton is a village in the parish of Shotton, County Durham, England, The village once lay on the route of the A19, before its bypass to the west of the village. Although Old Shotton retains its own identity, and its own village sign, it now forms part of the new town of Peterlee. Following the foundation of Peterlee in 1948, the town spread westward, towards the A19, and so by the 1970s this small village had already begun to be encroached on. The village is home to two old pubs, "The Black Bull" and "The Royal George" which were both inns on the old A19. Nearby is Shotton Hall, home of Peterlee town council. Its ballroom is used for both private and public functions. Today, thanks to the redirection of the A19 in the 1970s, Old Shotton is now a quiet cul-de-sac. There are some 30 dwellings, most of which are post 1960s, and only about 10 which pre-date the 1950s.

Hutton Henry is a village in the civil parish of Hutton Henry and Station Town, in County Durham, England, near Peterlee, Castle Eden and Wingate. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 1,565. It is situated to the west of Hartlepool, near the villages of Wingate and Station Town. At the top of hills in Hutton Henry the sea, Blackhall Colliery, Castle Eden, Wingate, Peterlee and Shotton can be seen. On 1 February 2023 the parish was renamed from "Hutton Henry" to "Hutton Henry and Station Town".In ca. 1050 the village was known as Hoton. Henry de Essh held it in the 14th century, providing the second part of the name. During the 19th century it was a mining village, as were the nearby villages of Wingate and Station Town. Its population increased from 156 in 1801 to 3,151 in 1891 due to the opening of collieries. Hutton Henry colliery was operational between 1876 and 1897 and was owned by Hutton Henry Coal Co. Ltd. In 1894 its average output was about 190,000 tons per annum, and it was said to employ 1,000 men and boys.

Wellfield railway station was a railway station that served the village of Wingate in County Durham, England. It was built by the North Eastern Railway (NER) on the route of the Hartlepool Dock & Railway (HD&R) to allow interchange between the existing line and their newly opened line from Stockton-on-Tees.

Station Town is a village in the civil parish of Hutton Henry and Station Town, in County Durham, England. It is situated to the south of Wingate, west of Hartlepool. Station Town is easily accessible, by road via the A19 and the B1280.
