Sorn, East Ayrshire

Sorn Castle is located by the River Ayr just outside the village of Sorn in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The castle comprises a medieval tower house, which was extended over the years, and remodelled in the Scots Baronial style by David Bryce in the 1860s. The castle is protected as a category A listed building.

East Ayrshire (Scots: Aest Ayrshire; Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Àir an Ear) is one of 32 unitary council areas of Scotland. It shares borders with Dumfries and Galloway, East Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. The headquarters of the council are located on London Road, Kilmarnock. With South Ayrshire and the mainland areas of North Ayrshire, it formed the former county of Ayrshire. East Ayrshire had a population of 122,100 at the 2011 census, making it the 16th most populous local authority in Scotland. Spanning a geographical area of 1,262 km2 (487 sq mi), East Ayrshire is the 14th-largest local authority in Scotland in terms of geographical area. The majority of the population of East Ayrshire live within and surrounding the main town, Kilmarnock. Other large population areas in East Ayrshire include Cumnock, the second-largest town, and smaller towns and villages such as Stewarton, Darvel and Hurlford. The largest school in Scotland, the Robert Burns Academy, is located in Cumnock.

Kyle (or Coila poetically; Scottish Gaelic: Cuil) is a former comital district of Scotland which stretched across parts of modern-day East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire. It is supposedly named after Coel Hen, a legendary king of the Britons, who is said to be buried under a mound at Coylton.

Catrine railway station served the village of Catrine in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Open 1903–1943, except for a temporary closure, the station was the only one on the Catrine branch line of the Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR).

Auchinleck ( OKH-in-LEK; Scots: Affleck IPA: [ˈaflɛk]; Scottish Gaelic: Achadh nan Leac) is a village 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Mauchline, and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Surrounding the village is Auchinleck Estate, centred on Auchinleck House, past home of the lawyer, diarist and biographer James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck.

Back Rogerton was built in the post-World War II housing boom. It is a part of Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The area was bounded by the disused Rogerton Quarry, railway lines and Back Rogerton Farm. The creation of this was necessitated by the removal of many miners and their families from the substandard housing of smaller mining villages in the area. Part of Well Road, Auchinleck follows the edge of the former site of Rogerton Quarry. The quarry itself is now a public park housing the MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area).

Auchinleck railway station is a railway station in the village of Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The station is managed by ScotRail and is on the Glasgow South Western Line. It is also the nearest station to the larger town of Cumnock.

Auchinleck Talbot Football Club is a Scottish football club based in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire. They currently play in the West of Scotland League Premier Division. The club is also a member of the Scottish Junior Football Association, and have won the Scottish Junior Cup on a record 14 occasions. They compete in a local derby against near neighbours and biggest rivals Cumnock Juniors.

The Lady's Well is a natural spring surmounted by a large cross that stands beside the Stra Burn Ford (NS254630) near Auchmannoch House in the Parish of Sorn, East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is associated with the Virgin Mary as a curative well, a Wishing Well and also a Clootie well, additionally Mary Queen of Scots is said to have once watered her horse here. A large red sandstone cross was erected here at an unrecorded date. The well is also said to have acquired its name through "..one of the ladies of Auchmannoch family drinking water exclusively from here."

Catrine is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland which was formerly a centre of cotton manufacture. It has a population of around 2,020 (mid-2020 est.)

Knockroon is a planned development located between the towns of Cumnock and Auchinleck in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The development was initiated by Prince Charles (later King Charles III) as part of his renovation plans for the nearby Dumfries House estate, which he hoped would regenerate the local economy in this depressed area. East Ayrshire Council granted outline planning permission for 770 houses on 7 December 2009.The development of Knockroon was expected to continue over a 25-year period, backed by The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment, and is being designed on green principles. The first houses in the development were built by Hope Homes Scotland and ZeroC. Prince Charles has expressed a personal interest in the development. Construction started in April 2011. In February 2019 The Scotsman reported that only 31 of the planned 770 homes had been built. In July 2022, The Sunday Times reported that the project's value "was written down from £15 million to £700,000". A leading Scottish architect, Professor Alan Dunlop, described the prince's vision as an "imported pastiche" and a "curious mix" of relatively expensive homes dropped into a rural setting that should have never been built.In July 2022, a spokesman for the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator said "we can confirm that the work of Havisham Group and property transactions relating to the Knockroon development in Ayrshire forms part of our overall investigation, work on which is ongoing." Between 2012 and 2017, Havisham Properties, owned by Lord Brownlow, purchased 11 properties for £1.7 million on the Knockroon development. Brownlow had been a trustee of The Prince's Foundation between 2013 and 2018, serving for a period as Chairman.

Commondyke railway station was a railway station on the Muirkirk branch that served the mining village, farms and community of Commondyke and Birnieknowe, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The station was originally part of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway before passing to the Glasgow and South-Western Railway, then the London, Midland and Scottish upon grouping and closing under British Railways. Passenger services to Muirkirk station ceased in 1950.
