Bishop Auckland Hospital

Bishop Auckland is a railway station that serves the market town of Bishop Auckland, in County Durham, England. It lies 11 miles 77 chains (19.3 km) north-west of Darlington. The station is the Western terminus of the Tees Valley Line, which links it to Saltburn via Darlington. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. Bishop Auckland West, 150 m to the west, is the terminus of the Weardale Railway, and opened in 2010.

Auckland Park Hospital in Bishop Auckland provides psychiatric care to the elderly. It is managed by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

Bishop Auckland ( AWK-lənd) is a market town and civil parish at the confluence of the River Wear and the River Gaunless in County Durham, England. It is 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Darlington and 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Durham. Much of the town's early history surrounds the Bishops of Durham and the establishment of Auckland Castle's predecessor, a hunting lodge, which became the main residence of Durham Bishops. This is reflected in the first part of the town's name. During the Industrial Revolution, the town grew rapidly as coal mining became its largest industry. Decline in the coal mining industry during the late twentieth century has changed the town's largest sector to manufacturing. Since 1 April 2009, the town's local authority has been Durham County Council. The unitary authority replaced the previous Wear Valley District and Durham County councils. The parliamentary constituency of Bishop Auckland is named after the town. It is currently held by Sam Rushworth of the Labour Party. The town is twinned with the French town of Ivry-sur-Seine.

King James I Academy (formally known as King James I Community Arts College) is a medium size academy school and sixth form centre for mixed gender aged 11–18 in the town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham in northeast England. It traces its history to the early 17th century. The site currently consists of two large two-storey buildings as well as a few small cabins, including the "Kings Feast" which is used to sell food at breaks, lunches and special occasions. The others are used as classrooms or form rooms similar to the rooms inside the other buildings.

Bishop Auckland Town Hall is a municipal facility in the Market Place, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, England. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Bishop Barrington Academy (formerly Bishop Barrington School) is a co-educational secondary school located in the town of Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, England. It was established in 1810 in the town's market place and named after, the then Bishop of Durham, Shute Barrington, who was a notable patron of education. Today the school is based on Woodhouse Lane opposite St John's Catholic School and Bishop Auckland College. Previously a community school administered by Durham County Council, in September 2021 Bishop Barrington School converted to academy status and was renamed Bishop Barrington Academy. The school is now sponsored by the Advance Learning Partnership.

Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace, is a former bishop's palace located in the town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. The castle was a residence of the bishops of Durham from approximately 1183 and was their primary residence between 1832 and 2012, when the castle and its contents were sold to the Auckland Castle Trust (now the Auckland Project). It is now a tourist attraction, but still houses the bishop's offices. The castle is notable for its chapel, described as "one of the finest rooms in North East England" in the Buildings of England series, which was the medieval great hall until it was remodelled by Bishop John Cosin in 1661–1665. The woodwork, which includes the pulpit, stalls, and screen, was commissioned by Cosin and combines Gothic and Baroque forms. The castle also contains twelve paintings depicting Jacob and His Twelve Sons by the Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán; the thirteenth portrait, Benjamin, is a copy, as the original hangs in Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire. Auckland Castle is a grade I listed building.

Woodhouse Close Estate or locally "Woodhouse" is a post-war former council housing estate, located to the south of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. It is not to be confused with a nearby hamlet named "Woodhouses". The estate was built to house hundreds of families who were displaced due to their villages being ruled a "Category D" Village. In an area classified as D, this meant that no future development would be permitted, and property would be acquired and demolished. Woodhouse Close now has multiple villages which are situated on the outskirts of the estate such as Tindale Crescent and Etherley Dene.

St John's Catholic School & Sixth Form College is a Coeducational Roman Catholic secondary school and sixth form with academy status. It is located on Woodhouse Lane in the town of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. St John's Catholic School opened in 1964 and currently has 1372 pupils enrolled between the ages of 11 and 18 (of which 305 are aged 16–18). School facilities include a swimming pool, sports hall, gymnasium and an Astroturf football pitch, all of which are used by the school and outside community groups. St John's has a variety of after school clubs including a swimming club and chess club.

South Church is a village just south of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. St Andrew's church is the largest church in County Durham and a Grade I listed building. The church was built in the thirteenth century and acted as a collegiate church. The astronomer and mathematician Thomas Wright was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's after his death in 1786. The area between the River Gaunless and the Bishop Auckland town boundary is currently unparished, but 2023 proposals recommend taking this area into the town. However, the village spills across the Gaunless into Dene Valley parish, so that part is parished already. South Church railway station opened in 1842 but was in operation for only about three years. Nowadays the area is served by Bishop Auckland railway station.

The Gaunless is a tributary river of the Wear in County Durham, England. Its name is Old Norse, meaning "useless". The Gaunless Viaduct, built in 1825, was the tallest viaduct on the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway. Formed just south of the village of Copley, by the confluence of Arn Gill (to the south, coming west from south of Langleydale Common) and Hindon Beck (to the north and coming east from Langleydale Common), the Gaunless wends its way east, passing the settlements of Butterknowle, Cockfield and Evenwood and through West Auckland before skirting the south and east of Bishop Auckland on its way to meet the River Wear. An extension of the Copley Met.Office weather station has been placed at the head of the river at Copley Lead Mill to study its unique climate of frost and snow. It lies in a frost hollow and receives no sunshine between October and March because of its geography.

Toronto is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a mile to the north-west of Bishop Auckland and was represented in Wear Valley District Council until that authority was merged into Durham County Council in April 2009. In the 2001 census Toronto had a population of 399.
