Ellerby, North Yorkshire

Silkstone Hall is a historic building in Hinderwell, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The house was constructed for the artist Henry Silkstone Hopwood, to a design by Edgar Wood. It was completed in 1902, and was originally named "The Croft". After Hopwood's death in 1914, the building was occupied by the local Inspector of Mines. The building's architect was long forgotten, but was identified by the Edgar Wood Research Project in the 2010s, and as a result the house was grade II listed in 2015. Historic England describe it as an "exemplary example of Arts and Crafts architecture using local materials and vernacular forms". The house was designed by Edgar Wood in Arts and Crafts style. It is in sandstone with pantile roofs, stone coped gables and kneelers. There are three storeys including attics, and a compact plan, and all the fronts are asymmetric. Most of the windows are mullioned, and here are bay windows. At the entrance to the drive is a gateway, and at the northwest is a pedestrian entrance, both with wrought iron gates in Art Nouveau style. The gate piers have wrought iron finials. Inside, there is an entrance hall leading to a central staircase. The northern first floor bedroom is believed to have originally been an artist's studio, and retains a fireplace which is likely to be original.

Hinderwell railway station was a railway station on the Whitby Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway. It was opened on 3 December 1883, and served the villages of Hinderwell and Runswick Bay. Like most stations on the line between Loftus and Whitby West Cliff, it was built with a passing loop. However, the northbound side was not furnished with a platform until 1908. The station closed to all traffic on 5 May 1958. The station buildings have all been demolished, and small industrial units occupy the site. However, the former railway cottages are still (February 2008) extant, albeit modernised and extended.

Mickleby is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 UK census, Mickleby parish had a population of 283, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 165. However, the 2011 census statistics are for an output area which includes Barnby and Ellerby, and for which the 2001 census figure was 274.

Runswick Bay is a bay in North Yorkshire, England. It is also the name of a village located on the western edge of the bay (although the village is sometimes shortened to Runswick on UK road signs). It is 5 miles (8 km) north of Whitby, and close to the villages of Ellerby and Hinderwell. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its picturesque cliffside village, stunning coastal walks, fossil hunting and Runswick Sands, a white sand beach. It is on the Cleveland Way national trail. Runswick Bay was chosen as Beach of the Year 2020 by The Sunday Times.

Hinderwell is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England which lies within the North York Moors National Park, about a mile from the coast on the A174 road between the towns of Loftus and Whitby. The 2011 UK census states Hinderwell parish had a population of 1,875, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 2,013. Hinderwell was the most northerly parish in the Scarborough Borough Council area until its abolition in 2023. Hinderwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hildrewell, and is said to have got its name from Saint Hilda of Whitby, the Abbess of Whitby Abbey. St Hilda's Church, Hinderwell is named for her, as it St Hilda's Well in the churchyard. Hinderwell Methodist Church was built in 1873. The civil parish of Hinderwell encompasses: the village of Staithes the hamlet of Port Mulgrave grid reference NZ794174 the hamlet of Runswick Bay NZ806161, a popular beach resort with a lifeboat service operated independently since 1982. the hamlet of Dalehouse NZ777180, which contains the Fox and Hounds pub. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.

Newton Mulgrave is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 40 in 2014. According to the 2001 UK census, Newton Mulgrave parish had a population of 37. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.

Hinderwell Methodist Church is a historic building in Hinderwell, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The chapel was built for the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1873. In 1886, it was extended to provide a room for a Sunday school. By 2024, the congregation had relocated to the former Sunday school, and the chapel was sold for conversion into housing. It has been grade II listed since 1985. The buildings are constructed of stone with Welsh slate roofs, stone copings, kneelers and finials. They form two parallel ranges, the chapel taller. Each has quoins, an eaves band, and a central round-arched doorway in a gabled projection flanked by round-arched windows. Above the chapel doorway is an inscribed plaque and a small round-headed window, and above the school doorway is a circular window. In front is a low forecourt wall with four-gabled gate piers and alternating raised rounded coping stones.

Runswick Bay Rescue Boat operates out of the former RNLI Tractor shed, and is located in the village of Runswick Bay, in the county of North Yorkshire, in England. Runswick Lifeboat Station was opened here in 1866 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The station remained in operation until 1978, when the All-weather lifeboat was withdrawn, and the former station at nearby Staithes was reopened as an Inshore lifeboat station. A rescue service was re-established in 1982 by the locally formed Runswick Bay Rescue Boat Association (RBRB). RBRB currently operate a 4.8 m (16 ft) Ribcraft RIB, Spirit of Nagar, on station since 2020.

Runswick RNLI Station, not to be confused with Runswick Bay Rescue Boat, was located in the village of Runswick Bay, approximately 7 mi (11 km) north-west of Whitby, in the county of North Yorkshire, England. A lifeboat station was established here in 1866 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In 1978, the nearby lifeboat station at Staithes was reopened as in Inshore lifeboat station, and renamed Staithes and Runswick. The All-weather lifeboat 37-11 The Royal Thames (ON 978) was withdrawn, and Runswick Lifeboat Station closed. Following a meeting of the local population, and with the view that a rescue service was still required, the independent Runswick Bay Rescue Boat was established in 1982.

St Hilda's Church is the parish church of Hinderwell, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. A church was built on the site in the Saxon period, and rebuilt in the 12th century. There is a holy well in its churchyard. The old church was demolished and the current church was built in 1773, while the tower was rebuilt in 1817. The church was restored in 1895, and was grade II listed in 1969. The church is built of stone with a Welsh slate roof, and consists of a nave, a chancel and a west tower. It measures 68 feet (21 m) by 29 feet (8.8 m). The tower has two stages, a west doorway, and an embattled parapet. The windows are square-headed with Perpendicular tracery, and at the east end is a Venetian window. Inside, part of a Norman piscina and some Saxon carvings survive from the old church. There is a Gothic oak screen, and a west gallery and organ which were moved from Selby Abbey. St Hilda's Well in the churchyard is probably mediaeval and was restored in 1912. The wellhead is built of stone, the side walls are rusticated, and it carries a flat slab roof above the spring. On the well is an inscription relating to the restoration.

The Hob Holes are caves in the cliffs of Runswick Bay, Scarborough, England which resulted from mining for jet – fossilised wood which is valuable as a gemstone. A hobgoblin, a bogle, or a hob was rumored to live there. Local mothers would visit the site with their children during low tide, seeking a remedy for whooping cough by calling on the spirit with the words: Hob Hole hob, my child has the kin cough, Take it off, Take it off! One account mentions that, apart from aiding with childhood illnesses, the hob would roam the moors behind the bay with a lantern, luring travelers into the rocky pits. On stormy nights, he would offer shelter in his hole, only to abandon them to the rising tide.

Port Mulgrave is a derelict former ironstone exporting port on the North Yorkshire coast midway between Staithes and Runswick Bay in the civil parish of Hinderwell. Rows of domestic properties and individual houses exist on the top of the cliff. Historically the locality was known as Rosedale, but to avoid confusion with the ironstone mines and iron works at Rosedale in the middle of the North York Moors the area was renamed Port Mulgrave for the local landowner the Earl of Mulgrave.
