South Hero, Vermont

The South Hero Inn is a historic commercial building at 301 United States Route 2 (corner of South Street) in the center of South Hero, Vermont. Built in 1829, it is a prominent local example of a stone building with Federal and Greek Revival features, and served as a traveler accommodation until the early 1970s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It now houses a bank.

South Hero is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of South Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 225, out of 1,674 in the entire town of South Hero. The CDP is in southern Grand Isle County, on the Lake Champlain island of South Hero in the center of the town of the same name. It is bordered to the north by Keeler Bay, an arm of the east channel of Lake Champlain. U.S. Route 2 passes through the village, leading southeast 18 miles (29 km) to Burlington and north 26 miles (42 km) to Alburgh.

Grand Isle, also known as South Hero Island, is the largest island in Lake Champlain, Vermont, United States. It has a land area of 31.61 square miles (81.9 km2). The island comprises the two towns of Grand Isle and South Hero, Vermont. The total population as of the 2000 census was 3,651.

Grand Isle State Park is a 226-acre state park in Grand Isle, Vermont on the shore of Lake Champlain.Activities includes boating, swimming, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, bicycling, wildlife watching, water sports and winter sports.Facilities include a boat launching ramp, sand-court volleyball, horseshoes, a play area, 117 tent/RV sites, 36 lean-to sites, 4 cabin sites, restrooms with running water and hot showers, and a trailer sanitary station.The park features a nature center and park rangers offer interpretive programs including night hikes, campfire programs, amphibian explorations, and nature crafts and games.

The Gordon-Center House is a historic house on West Shore Road (Vermont Route 314) in Grand Isle, Vermont. Probably built in first quarter of the 19th century, it was long been associated with the nearby ferry service to Plattsburgh, New York, and is one of the town's few surviving 19th-century stone buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Carleton's Prize is a small rock island in the Vermont waters of Lake Champlain, in Crescent Bay off the southwestern tip of South Hero. Rising 30 feet (9.1 m) from water's edge to a plateau, situated between Stave and Providence Islands, it has been called Carleton's Prize since the American Revolutionary War when Sir Guy Carleton brought it to notoriety in 1776, the morning after the Battle of Valcour Island.Local lore has it that it was very foggy on the lake as Benedict Arnold escaped from behind Valcour Island with what was left of his small fleet. Not believing the Americans could have slipped by in the dark (which they had), the British searched to the north and east. In the heavy fog they sighted what they thought was a ship and summarily pounded it with their cannons, smoke from the black powder adding to the lack of visibility.After up to an hour without return fire, either a breeze came up or the fog burned off, and the British realized they had not been firing on a ship. This distraction allowed Arnold to escape down the lake to Addison, Vermont, where he burned his remaining fleet to prevent capture. Local lore goes further to say that local Islanders had hoisted logs on the island to look like masts. Rust marks from fired cannon shot are still visible on the rock.

Cedar Island is a 10-acre (4 ha) island located in Lake Champlain. It is the southernmost of three islands to the east of South Hero, Vermont. Cedar Island lies approximately two miles (3.2 km) north of the Sand Bar Bridge. Cedar Island is privately owned and accessible only by boat.
