Highgate, Vermont

Highgate Center is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Highgate, Franklin County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 361, out of 3,472 in the entire town of Highgate. The CDP is in northwestern Franklin County, in the south-central part of the town of Highgate. It sits on the north side of the Missisquoi River, a west-flowing tributary of Lake Champlain, where the river passes over Highgate Falls. Vermont Route 78 (Franklin Street) passes through the center of the village, leading southeast 6 miles (10 km) to Vermont Route 105 at Sheldon Junction and southwest 4 miles (6 km) to Swanton. Vermont Route 207 also passes through the village, leading south 9 miles (14 km) to St. Albans and northeast 6 miles (10 km) to the Canadian border at Morses Line.

The Douglas & Jarvis Patent Parabolic Truss Iron Bridge is a historic bridge across the Missisquoi River in Highgate, Vermont. Located at the end of Mill Hill Road, it is at 215 feet (66 m) one of the longest bridges of its type in the northeastern United States. It was built in 1887, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Swanton Covered Railroad Bridge was a covered bridge in Swanton, Vermont. Built in 1898, it carried the St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad across the Missisquoi River just west of Swanton village. It was destroyed by fire in 1987, and its site is now occupied by the former West Milton Bridge. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and has not been delisted despite its destruction.

Highgate Manor is a manor located on Vermont Route 207 in Highgate, Vermont. It has been used as a home, as a bed and breakfast, and as a dance hall. Local legend says that the children of a doctor who once owned the house and performed experiments on them have remained in the house since they died.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church located on the village green in the village of Highgate Falls in Highgate, Vermont, in the United States. Built 1829–30, it is prominent local example of a Federal style church with Gothic Revival features. On September 3, 1976, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Franklin County State Airport (ICAO: KFSO, FAA LID: FSO) is a public airport located three miles (5 km) west of the central business district of Highgate, a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. It is owned by the State of Vermont. Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Franklin County State Airport is assigned FSO by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.

The Franklin-5 Representative District is a two-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Franklin-5 District includes all of the Franklin County towns of Sheldon and Swanton. As of the 2000 census, the state, as a whole, had a population of 608,827. Being that there are a total of 150 representatives, there were also a total of 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The two member Franklin-5 District had a population of 8,193, in that same census, which was 0.92% above the state average.

The Rock River (French: Rivière de la Roche) is a tributary of Rock River Bay, an arm of Missisquoi Bay in the northern part of Lake Champlain. The river rises in the town of Franklin, in Franklin County, Vermont, United States, flows west into the town of Highgate, Vermont, and then north into Saint-Armand, Quebec, in the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality, administrative region of Montérégie, in the southwest of the province of Quebec, Canada. The river then turns south and re-enters Highgate, flowing into Rock River Bay north of Highgate Springs. Besides the village area of Saint-Armand, agriculture is the main economic activity in the river valley; recreational tourism is a secondary activity near Lake Champlain.The Rock River valley is crossed the following roads: Franklin County (upper course): Hanna Road, Beaver Meadow Road, Barnum Road and Browns Corner Road; Highgate (intermediate course): Bouchard Road, Cassidy Road, Gore Road (VT 207) Tarte Road, and Rollo Road; Saint-Armand (in Quebec): chemin Pelletier Sud, chemin de Saint-Armand, chemin Bradley; Highgate (lower course): Saint Armand Road, Interstate 89, and Spring Street (US 7).The surface of the Rock River (except the rapids zones) is generally frozen from mid-December to the beginning of March, but the safe circulation on the ice is generally made from the end of December to the end of February. The water level of the river varies with the seasons and the precipitation; the spring flood generally occurs in March.

Rockledge is a historic summer estate house on Vermont Route 207 in Swanton, Vermont. Architect Charles Saxe in 1918 designed alterations to an early 19th-century farmhouse, that is the principal surviving element of an early 20th-century gentleman's farm. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Sheldon Springs is an unincorporated community village in the town of Sheldon in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. It lies at an altitude of 299 feet (91 m). A post office was established in 1871.At one time it was known as Olmstead Falls.

Highgate Springs is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Highgate, Franklin County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 77.The CDP is in northwestern Franklin County, in the western part of the town of Highgate. It sits on the southeast shore of Missisquoi Bay, an arm of Lake Champlain. U.S. Route 7 passes through the southeast side of the community, and Interstate 89 forms the southeast border. Both highways lead south 4 miles (6 km) to Swanton and north 3 miles (5 km) to the U.S.–Canada border at the Highgate Springs–St. Armand/Philipsburg Border Crossing.

Bridge 9 is a historic Parker through truss bridge, carrying Shawville Road across the Missisquoi River in Sheldon, Vermont. Built in 1928 after Vermont's devastating 1927 floods, it is one of the few surviving Parker truss bridges on the Missisquoi. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
