Designed by architects William Hatcher and Lawrence Funke, it was built in 1925 by Rogers and Duncanson. In 1989, it was listed in A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture, published by the University of Florida Press.The new Okeechobee High School is now located at 2800 Highway 441 North and the 1925 building is the Okeechobee Freshman Campus.

The Battle of Lake Okeechobee was one of the major battles of the Second Seminole War. It was fought between 800 troops of the 1st, 4th, and 6th Infantry Regiments and 132 Missouri Volunteers (under the command of Colonel Zachary Taylor), and between 380 and 480 Seminoles led by Billy Bowlegs, Abiaca, and Halpatter Tustenuggee (Alligator) on 25 December 1837. Halpatter Tustenuggee had played a major role in the Dade Battle two years earlier. The Seminole warriors were resisting forced relocation to a reservation in Oklahoma. Though both the Seminoles and Taylor's troops emerged from the battle claiming victory, Taylor was promoted to the rank of brigadier general as a result, and his nickname of "Old Rough and Ready" came mostly due to this battle.

Taylor Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) in Okeechobee County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,348 at the 2010 census.

The Okeechobee Battlefield is a U.S. National Historic Landmark (designated as such on July 4, 1961). It is located four miles (6 km) southeast of Okeechobee, on US 441/98, near Taylor Creek. The Battle of Lake Okeechobee, one of the major conflicts of the Second Seminole War, was fought at the site. Part of the battlefield is preserved as Okeechobee Battlefield State Historic Park.

The First Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1924, is a historic red brick Gothic Revival church located at 200 NW 2nd Street in Okeechobee, Florida. In 1989, it was listed in A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture, published by the University of Florida Press. In August 2015, it was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, as the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Today it is known as First United Methodist Church.

The Lake Okeechobee area was severely damaged in the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane, the first recorded Category 5 hurricane in the North Atlantic. This was one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to strike the US. Okeechobee is served by the Okeechobee County Airport.
