Mount Carmel Area High School is located at 600 West 5th Street, Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 2016, enrollment was 420 pupils in 9th through 12th grades. The school employed 39 teachers. It is the sole high school operated by the Mount Carmel Area School District. High school students may choose to attend the Northumberland County Career Technology Center for training in the construction and mechanical trades. In 2016, 76 MCAHS pupils attended the CTC school. For the 2014–15 school year, several Mount Carmel resident students chose to enroll in public, cyber charter schools, rather than attend the district's high school. North Branch Shamokin Creek (also known as Beaver Creek) is a tributary of Shamokin Creek in Columbia County and Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is approximately 4.8 miles (7.7 km) long and flows through Conyngham Township in Columbia County and Mount Carmel Township in Northumberland County. The watershed of the creek has an area of 5.73 square miles (14.8 km2). The entirety of the creek is designated as an impaired waterbody due to metals from abandoned mine drainage. It is acidic, but its pH has been increasing. Underground mine complexes occur within the watershed. The creek has a permeable streambed and experiences flow loss. A colliery historically discharged waste water into North Branch Shamokin Creek. A number of bridges have been constructed over the creek. Its drainage basin is designated as a Coldwater Fishery and a Migratory Fishery. However, the creek is incapable of supporting aquatic life, including fish and macroinvertebrates.

Lavelle is a census-designated place that is located in Butler Township, Schuylkill County in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in the United States. Situated on Pennsylvania Route 901, it was part of the Lavelle-Locustdale CDP for the 2000 census, before the communities were split into the two separate CDPs of Lavelle and Locustdale. Originally named Salome, as a tribute to the wife of one of the town's pioneer settlers, the community was officially renamed as Lavelle sometime around 1880 in honor of Martin M. Lavelle, an Ashland, Pennsylvania attorney who had been a cavalryman during the American Civil War.During the late nineteenth century, the community of Lavelle was described by area newspapers as a hamlet. By the late twentieth century, it was still small, referred to in its own public notices as the Village of Lavelle.
