Killean, County Armagh

Newtowncloghoge (usually ) is a small village in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 357 people. It lies within the Newry and Mourne District Council area, west of the A1 road.

The attack on Cloghoge checkpoint was an unconventional railway bomb attack carried out on 1 May 1992 by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) against a British Army permanent vehicle checkpoint, manned at the time by members of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The IRA's South Armagh Brigade fitted a van with train wheels that allowed it to move along a railway line. A large bomb was placed inside the van, which was then driven along the railway line to the target. The explosion killed one British soldier and injured 23 others. The complex, just north of the village of Cloghoge in County Armagh, on the southern outskirts of Newry, was utterly destroyed.

The Showgrounds is a football stadium in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. It was the home ground of Newry City F.C. and is now the home ground of their successor club, Newry City A.F.C. The stadium holds 7,949, but is currently restricted to 2,275 under safety legislation.The stadium is located in the Greenbank Industrial Estate on the Warrenpoint Road, close to the Down GAA home stadium of Páirc Esler.

John Mitchel GFC was a Gaelic Athletic Association club, established in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, in 1956, and is called after the Irish Patriot John Mitchel. The club had the audacious ambition of winning the Down Senior Football Championship in five years and actually succeeded in four years, winning its first in 1960 and repeating the feat three more times in that decade in 1964, 1967 and 1968. Newry Mitchels forward Seán O'Neill also won 3 All-Ireland Senior Football Championships with Down and was picked on the Gaelic Athletic Association's teams of the Century and Millennium. Mitchels home pitch is Gerry Brown Park, Greenbank. The grounds are named after Gerry Brown, founding member. Gerry managed the Down Senior football team to All-Ireland success in 1968. The club also has club rooms in Kilmorey street, on the County Down side of Newry. Mitchels currently are defunt Having used to compete in the Down Junior Championship. Club colours are red and white. The club hosts an annual under 10 tournament known as 'The Mitchels Blitz' and 'The under ten All Ireland'.

Páirc Esler ( park ESS-lər, Irish: [ˌpˠaːɾʲc ˈɛsˠlˠəɾˠ]; also Irish: Páirc an Iúir [ˈpˠaːɾʲc ənʲ ˈuːɾʲ]) is a GAA stadium in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is the home of the Down Gaelic football and hurling teams and the Newry Shamrocks GAA club. The ground has a capacity of about 20,000.

Meigh (from Irish Máigh/an Mhaigh, meaning 'the plain') is a small village and townland near Slieve Gullion in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 444 people in the 2001 Census. It lies within the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area.

The Newry Canal is an abandoned canal in Northern Ireland. Opened in 1742, it was built to link the Tyrone coalfields to the Irish Sea. The navigable route ran from Lough Neagh via the Upper Bann river to Portadown (approximated 9 miles), then approximately 20 miles from Portadown via the canal proper to Newry, terminating in the Albert Basin. The canal was closed to navigation in 1949, however its line remains intact and the towpath is currently part of the National Cycle Network and the Ulster Way long distance footpath. The Newry Ship Canal (opened in 1769), runs approximately 3½ miles south from Newry's Albert Basin to connect with the sea at Carlingford Lough. The Newry Ship Canal remains navigable by pleasure craft today.

South Down was a constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland.

The Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School (Irish: Scoil na Mainistreach, Iúr Cinn Trá) is a voluntary day school for boys aged 11 – 18 years in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland.

On 17 February 1978, a British Army Gazelle helicopter, serial number XX404, went down near Jonesborough, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, after being fired at by a Provisional IRA unit from the South Armagh Brigade. The IRA unit was involved at the time in a gun battle with a Green Jackets observation post deployed in the area, and the helicopter was sent in to support the ground troops. The helicopter crashed after the pilot lost control of the aircraft whilst evading ground fire. Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Douglas Corden-Lloyd, 2nd Battalion Green Jackets commanding officer, died in the crash. The incident was overshadowed in the press by the La Mon restaurant bombing, which took place just hours later near Belfast.
