Richtenberg (German: [ˈʁɪçtn̩ˌbɛʁk] ) is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is 18 km (11 mi) southwest of Stralsund. Richtenberg was first mentioned in the founding document of the Neuenkamp monastery (today Franzburg) dated 8 November 1231. It is the oldest documented place in the region. In the foundation deed of the ruling Prince Wizlaw I, the monastery was awarded a patronage over the Richtenberg church as well as a local salt source.

Nordvorpommern ("North Western Pomerania") was a Kreis (district) in the northern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea, where it enclosed the city of Stralsund. Further to the northeast, separated from Stralsund and Nordvorpommern by the Strelasund, lies the island of Rügen, administratively part of the eponymous district. Borgwallsee is a lake in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, at an elevation of 13.2 m (43 ft). Its surface area is 3.89 km2 (1.50 sq mi). The average depth is 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in). Apart from the woods on the southern shore, the area surrounding the lake is used widely for agriculture. Borgwallsee is a drinking water reservoir serving the city of Stralsund. As such, water activities are restricted and bathing is allowed only in designated areas.
