West Caln Township, Pennsylvania

Caln Township () is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 14,428 at the 2020 census. The township was founded by settlers from Calne, Wiltshire in England in 1714; the relationship between Calne and Wiltshire continues in the present since the two are sister cities. Caln is a township of the First Class, and the governing body is a Board of Commissioners. The township also owns Ingleside Golf Club and over 200 acres (0.81 km2) of green space and parks. Atop of a hill overlooking Coatesville and located in Caln, the historic Coatesville VA Medical Center (a major Veterans Administration hospital) provides care to approximately 20,000 veterans in the region annually. Brandywine Hospital, which resided in Caln Township, was abruptly closed in January 2022 by West Reading-based Tower Health after systemwide financial difficulties. The hospital primarily served northwestern Chester County. Caln Township is part of Coatesville Area School District (CASD). The western end of the township along U.S. Business 30 is sometimes referred to as the Village of Caln. Historically, there were places referred to as Reeceville (northwestern corner), Ingleside (between Caln and Thorndale), Bondsville (north of Thorndale), and Galagherville between Thorndale and Downingtown in the township. The names of these communities have since fallen out of usage, except for local road names and CASD’s Reeceville Elementary School.

Thorndale station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Thorndale, Pennsylvania. Located on South Bailey Road and East Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30 Business), it serves the Paoli/Thorndale Line. While Thorndale station is the terminus of SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line service, the tracks continue (with service by Amtrak), to points west, including Lancaster, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh. Amtrak does not stop at Thorndale. This station is 35.2 track miles from Philadelphia's Suburban Station. In 2017, the average total weekday boardings at this station was 427, and the average total weekday alightings was 374.

Clement Atkinson Memorial Hospital is a historic hospital building located at Coatesville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The hospital was founded in 1936 by Whittier C. Atkinson, the first African American physician in Chester County, who named the hospital after his father. It served the local African American population and remained in operation until 1978.The building contains five sections. The original section was the home of Dr. Atkinson. This section is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay red brick rowhouse dwelling in the Colonial Revival style. It had a one-story, eight-room, hospital wing at the rear of the dwelling, were built in 1932. A second story was added to the hospital wing in 1937. Later additions took place in 1955, 1962, and 1969. The hospital was converted to a community center and low-income apartments in 1991.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Caln Meeting House is a historic Quaker meeting house located at 901 Caln Meeting House Road, near Coatesville in Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1726, and is a one-story, tan fieldstone structure. It was enlarged to its present size in 1801.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Services are still held weekly at the meeting house. A graveyard is also held on the northern end of the building, with another sitting on the other side of PA 340. One third of the Caln Meeting House is used by the Old Caln Historical Society as a local history museum and to house archives, artifacts and other historical memorabilia.

Caln is a census-designated place (CDP) in Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. It is located east of the city of Coatesville and lies west of Philadelphia.

Thorndale is a census-designated place in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,407 at the 2010 census. Thorndale is the commercial and administrative center of Caln Township. The community's main street is U.S. Route 30 Business. Many of Thorndale's old houses fell into disrepair from the late 1990s to present and have been torn down and replaced with new businesses. Thorndale is historically notable for containing a summer house of U.S. President James Buchanan, which still stands and has been incorporated into a golf course and turned into a restaurant. The community contains the Thorndale Fire Station and Caln Elementary School, part of the Coatesville Area School District. Thorndale sits along SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line and is currently the last station stop on that line. It is also served by the SEPTA Route 135 bus.

The Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is part of the Coatesville Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District, was built in 1929, and is located near Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, this historic district includes thirty-seven contributing buildings, four contributing structures, one contributing object, and two contributing sites.

County Bridge No. 124 is a historic stone arch bridge located in Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It spans Beaver Creek. It has three arch spans, each of which are 24 feet (7.3 m) long. The bridge was constructed in 1916 of squared ashlar.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The Coatesville Area High School is a public high school in Caln Township, in central Chester County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is part of the Coatesville Area School District and the school has a Coatesville postal address. The high school is divided into two schools: Coatesville Area Intermediate High School (CAIHS, but called the 8/9 Center or simply 8/9) for 8th and 9th graders Coatesville Area Senior High (CASH) for 10th, 11th and 12th gradersStudent demographics are reported as follows: White, 57.3%; African American, 32.0%; Latino, 9.0%; Asian/Pacific Islander, 1.5%; Native American, 0.2%.

Joseph Gladden House is a historic home located in East Fallowfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was built about 1800, and is a two-story, two-bay, stuccoed stone Penn Plan dwelling. Two additions were built on the rear of the house.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Carver Court is a historic housing development located at Foundry Street and Brooks Lane near Coatesville in Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Built in 1944 in the International Style, Carver Court is important to understanding the African American experience in Coatesville. The development was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Along with southwest Delaware County, eastern Chester County is home to many communities that comprise part of the Philadelphia Main Line western suburbs of Philadelphia. As of 2020, the county had the highest median household income level in Pennsylvania, and the 35th-highest in the nation.
