West Homestead, Pennsylvania

Homestead is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA, in the Monongahela River valley 7 miles (11 km) southeast of downtown Pittsburgh and directly across the river from the city limit line. The borough is known for the Homestead Strike of 1892, an important event in the history of labor relations in the United States. The population of Homestead was 2,884 at the 2020 census.

St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral is the mother church of Byzantine Catholic Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh, the American branch of the Ruthenian Catholic Church. It is located at 210 Greentree Road in Munhall, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh in the Monongahela River valley.

The Homestead Historic District is a historic district in Homestead, Munhall, and West Homestead, Pennsylvania that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1990. It is the site of the Homestead Strike of 1892, when the Carnegie Steel Company under the leadership of Henry Clay Frick broke the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers union.It includes the Homestead Pennsylvania Railroad Station, which is separately listed on the NRHP, and the Bost Building, a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It is located close to Pittsburgh.

Sandcastle Waterpark is a water park located in the Pittsburgh suburb of West Homestead. The park is located on a 67-acre (270,000 m2) piece of land along the banks of the Monongahela River. Sandcastle is owned by Palace Entertainment, subsidiary of Spain-based Parques Reunidos, who purchased original parent company Kennywood Entertainment. The company runs its original sister parks, Kennywood, Idlewild Park, and Lake Compounce. The park contains fourteen water slides, several swimming pools, and a handful of other attractions.

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, also known as St. Nicholas Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, is a historic Russian Orthodox church at 903 Ann Street in Homestead, Pennsylvania. It was built between 1936 and 1958. The church serves the local Rusyn community. It is a member of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese. The church's stainless steel domes were built using steel from local mills.

Homestead is a disused railway station located in Homestead, Pennsylvania. The station was built in 1906 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 1985, as the Homestead Pennsylvania Railroad Station.Currently, the station is used by Allegheny County District Attorney's Office as its Regional Support and Training Center at the Waterfront.

The Steel Valley School District is a small, suburban public school district in the state of Pennsylvania. It is located to the southeast of the city of Pittsburgh. It serves the boroughs of Homestead, Munhall, and West Homestead, former mill towns. The Steel Valley School District encompasses approximately four square miles. According to 2005 local census data, it served a resident population of 18,340. In 2009, the district's resident per capita income was $16,902, while median family income was $40,295.The district operates four schools: Barrett Elementary School for students in grades K–4, Park Elementary School for grades K–4, Steel Valley Middle School for grades 5–8, and Steel Valley Senior High School for grades 9–12. Notable landmarks within the district include the site of the Homestead Strike, The Waterfront shopping complex, Sandcastle Waterpark, and the headquarters of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

Munhall is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, on the west bank of the Monongahela River, 8 miles (13 km) south of the confluence of the Monongahela and the Allegheny rivers where the Ohio River begins. It abuts the borough of Homestead. A large part of the Homestead Works of the Carnegie Steel Company existed in Munhall. Steel products were the only items made in Munhall in 1910 when 5,185 people lived here. In 1940, 13,900 people lived in Munhall. The population was 11,406 at the 2010 census. Munhall, along with the boroughs of Homestead and West Homestead, is served by the Steel Valley School District.

The Glenwood B&O Railroad Bridge is a truss bridge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which carries Allegheny Valley Railroad's W&P Subdivision over the Monongahela River. The span was constructed in 1884 and upgraded in 1915. It served the busy Wheeling division of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which in 1928, operated an average of 19 freight and 12 passenger trains across the structure each day. After B&O was absorbed into CSX Transportation, this company ran local freight trains across the bridge; the short line Allegheny Valley Railroad has a long-term lease to manage this structure, which serves a route between its headquarters in an adjacent rail yard and Washington, Pennsylvania.[1]

The Homestead Grays Bridge, also known as the (Homestead) High Level Bridge, was built in 1936 and spans the Monongahela River between Homestead Borough and the southernmost tip of Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. It is notable as the first bridge to incorporate the Wichert Truss, which uses a quadrilateral shape over each support, into its design. This made the truss statically determinate, so that forces in the structural members could be calculated. There are very few surviving Wichert Truss bridges, including one other example in Pittsburgh, the Charles Anderson Memorial Bridge.

The Waterfront is a super-regional open air shopping mall spanning the three boroughs of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall near Pittsburgh. The shopping mall sits on land once occupied by U.S. Steel's Homestead Steel Works plant, which closed in 1986. It has a gross leasable area of 700,000 square feet (65,000 m2) in "The Waterfront" and 400,000 square feet (37,000 m2) in "The Town Center." The development officially opened in 1999. More development continued into the early 21st century.The Waterfront is accessible from the Parkway East via the Homestead High-Level Bridge, now known as the Homestead Grays Bridge. Pennsylvania Route 837, which runs through the town of Homestead also connects drivers to The Waterfront via Amity Street and Waterfront Drive.

Hays Army Ammunition Plant was an 7.9-acre (3.2 ha), 1,650-employee foundry established in 1942 in the Hays neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At first it produced 16-inch (410 mm) shells and 5-inch (130 mm) breechblocks for the Navy. Though owned by the Army, the plant was operated by the Mesta Machine Company on behalf of the United States Navy during World War II. The plant was operated by the Mullins Manufacturing Company during the Korean War and by the Levinson Steel Company during the Vietnam War. For the Army it produced 105 mm shells, 250,000 of these per month throughout 1968. It was the only Army plant with cold extrusion capability. Manufacturing ceased in May 1970 and the plant was mothballed in June 1971. The 1982 value of the complex was $69 million. The plant was placed on standby in 1991 and donated for redevelopment in 1993. It is now used as an industrial site.
