Durham Miners Heritage Centre

Neville's Cross is a place in County Durham, in England. It is also a ward of Durham with a population taken at the 2011 census of 9,940. It is situated on the A167 trunk road to the west of the centre of Durham. The area is primarily residential, although there is a newsagent, a Church, some public houses and two primary schools located there. The suburb was also home to part of New College Durham until the college consolidated onto its site at Framwellgate Moor in 2005.

The Battle of Neville's Cross took place during the Second War of Scottish Independence on 17 October 1346, half a mile (800 m) to the west of Durham, England. An invading Scottish army of 12,000 led by King David II was defeated with heavy loss by an English army of approximately 6,000–7,000 men led by Ralph Neville, Lord Neville. The battle was named after an Anglo-Saxon stone cross that stood on the hill where the Scots made their stand. After the victory, Neville paid to have a new cross erected to commemorate the day. The battle was the result of the invasion of France by England during the Hundred Years' War. King Philip VI of France (r. 1328–1350) called on the Scots to fulfil their obligation under the terms of the Auld Alliance and invade England. David II obliged, and after ravaging much of northern England was taken by surprise by the English defenders. The ensuing battle ended with the rout of the Scots, the capture of their king and the death or capture of most of their leadership. Strategically, this freed significant English resources for the war against France, and the English border counties were able to guard against the remaining Scottish threat from their own resources. The eventual ransoming of the Scottish King resulted in a truce that brought peace to the border for forty years.

Ustinov College is the largest college of Durham University, located in Durham, North East England. Founded as the Graduate Society in 1965, it became a college in 2003 and was named after then-chancellor, Sir Peter Ustinov. Formerly at the Howlands Farm site at the top of Elvet Hill, in 2017 the college relocated to the Sheraton Park site in Neville's Cross.

Lowes Barn or Lowe's Barn is a suburb of the city of Durham in County Durham, England. It lies to the south-west of Durham and is linked with Neville's Cross.

Redhills is Grade II listed headquarters building of the Durham Miners' Association (DMA) in Durham, England. Officially called Miners' New Hall, it is known as Redhills from its location on Redhills Lane in the City of Durham. Redhills was designed by H. T. Gradon in Edwardian Baroque style and opened in 1915 to replace the former Miners' Hall building in North Road. Its debating chamber was known as the "Pitman's Parliament", which was featured in Historic England's 100 Places: Power, Protest & progress listIn March 2020 the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded a grant for restoration and renovation work, with the aim of restoring Redhills as a centre of culture and education. In October 2021, as part of the grant agreement, Durham Miners Association transferred ownership of the site to the Redhills Charitable Incorporated Organisation.In 2022, Redhills stated publicly its intention to join a transnational serial nomination bid for UNESCO World Heritage status, coordinated by The Workers Museum in Copenhagen. As of 2023, restoration and renovation works are underway.The Redhills Charity, which operates Redhills Durham Miners Hall, is run by Nick Malyan who is the Chief Executive of the charity and was appointed in February 2022. Durham School is an English independent boarding and day school in Durham, North East England and was an all-boys institution until 1985, when girls were admitted to the sixth form. The school takes pupils aged 3–18 years and became fully co-educational in 1998. A member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, it enrolls 650 day and boarding students. Its preparatory institution, known as Bow, Durham School, enrolls a further 160 pupils. Durham and Bow's former pupils include politicians, clergy and British aristocracy. Former students are known as Old Dunelmians. Founded by the Bishop of Durham, Thomas Langley, in 1414, it received royal foundation by King Henry VIII in 1541 following the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the Protestant Reformation. It is the city's oldest institution of learning.

Durham University Business School is the business school of Durham University and is located in Durham, England. Established in 1965, it holds triple accreditation (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS). It is currently ranked between 7th and 67th in the world for its MBA and MSc programmes by the Financial Times, The Economist and the Expansión. The Global MBA is currently ranked 43rd in the world by the Financial Times. The University's Department of Economics and Finance and the Foundation for Small and Medium Enterprise Development merged with the business school in 2002 to become the School of Economics, Finance and Business, more commonly known as Durham University Business School.

Rushford Court is a student hall and former hospital in Durham, England. It opened in 1853 as County Hospital, and closed as a hospital in 2010 after services were moved to Lanchester Road Hospital on the outskirts of the city. In 2018, after extensive work to demolish later additions to the hospital building and construct new accommodation blocks, Unite Students reopened the site as a privately-operated hall for Durham University students under the name Rushford Court. In 2019-20, the university used the site as a temporary home for its John Snow College, and in 2023 announced that it would be using it as a temporary home for Hild Bede College, and afterwards founding a new college on the site.

Durham Viaduct is a grade II* listed railway viaduct in the City of Durham in County Durham, in North East England. The viaduct is an important local landmark, and carries the East Coast Main Line railway, it is immediately south of Durham railway station. The viaduct is 790 feet (240 m) long, and 100 feet (30 m) tall, and consists of eleven arches. It is made from sandstone with ashlar dressings, and brick soffits.The viaduct dates from 1857, and was probably built by Thomas Elliot Harrison for the North Eastern Railway. It was originally part of a branch line, the Durham to Bishop Auckland Line, however it was later incorporated into what became the East Coast Main Line, when two new lines were opened to Gateshead to the north, in 1868, and from Durham to Tursdale Junction and Darlington to the south in 1872.The viaduct became grade II* listed in 1970.

Crossgate is a small area of housing that sits above North Road but below the Neville's Cross area of Durham. It is predominantly occupied by students at Durham University who favour the area due to its proximity to the university departments in the Elvet and Palace Green areas of the city.
