Marston Bigot

Marston Bigot Park encompasses approximately 222 hectares (2,220,000 m2) and includes Marston House, Marston Pond and the remains of the medieval shrunken village of Lower Marston. It is in the village of Marston Bigot within the English county of Somerset, England. The house is a Grade II* listed building.

Marston Moat is the site of a fortified manor house in the parish of Trudoxhill, Somerset, England. It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is now on the Heritage at Risk Register due to animal burrowing.The 23 feet (7.0 m) wide moat which measures 108 feet (33 m) by 188 feet (57 m) has a 10 feet (3.0 m) wide and 1 foot (0.30 m) high bank on its south and east sides. It is situated east of the River Frome. The site was held by the Bigot family of Marston Bigot before 1195. There is some evidence that they fortified it without a licence to crenellate from Edward II. As a result of this and an insult to the King's messenger Richard Bigot lost his titles to land, which were assigned to William de Meriet and John de Meriet. It was leased as a farmhouse by the reign of Edward IV however none of the stone remains, and no full excavation has ever been carried out.

Blatchbridge is a hamlet within the civil parish of Selwood in Somerset, England, on the B3092 road from Frome to Maiden Bradley. It formerly had a blacksmith's shop, on the Frome side of the River Frome. It has a public house called the Cross Keys, which was built in the early 19th century and has been designated as a Grade II listed building.A former Methodist chapel, now converted to a private dwelling, is halfway up the hill towards Frome.

The Church of All Saints at Nunney, Somerset, England, is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century.It was probably built on the site of an earlier Saxon or Norman church from which a Saxon cross and Norman font can still be seen. A 15th-century wagon or Barrel vault used to cover the nave however the timber rotted and it was demolished in 1957. A temporary roof was installed and hidden by a suspended ceiling. Plans are being drawn up to replace the roof and fundraising is under way.Sir John Delamare and other lords of Nunney Castle are buried in the church.The Anglican parish is part of the benefice of Postlebury within the archdeaconry of Wells.

Postlebury Wood (grid reference ST740430) is an 87 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Trudoxhill in Somerset, notified in 1987. Postlebury Wood is a large and relatively undisturbed woodland with the first records of the woodland being from documents dated 1182, shortly after which it was incorporated in the Royal Forest of Selwood, and has been coppiced and has been used for charcoal production in the past.The wood is largely composed of Oak (Quercus robur), Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and Hazel (Corylus avellana). The ground flora is well developed, ranging from communities of Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), Bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) and Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella). Plants of particular interest include Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum multiflorum), Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha), Bird's Nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis), Broad-leaved Helleborine (Epipactis helleborine) and Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale).Postlebury Wood supports large populations of homostyle Primroses, a plant found in only one area outside south-east Somerset. These plants, which are unique in that they represent a self-fertile form of a normally self-sterile species, are of international significance in providing opportunities for genetic studies.

Nunney is a village and civil parish in the Mendip local government district within the English county of Somerset. It is located 3 miles (5 km) south-west of Frome and the parish includes the hamlet of Holwell.The name of the village comes from Old English and means Nunna's island.Today, the tourist attractions are the ruins of Nunney Castle, a historic church, and ducks wandering the streets near the river. The village hall is host to Nunney Acoustic Cafe which provides live music, homemade food, a bar and children's art activities on the second Sunday of each month (except July and August).On 30 September 2007, Nunney was the subject of a BBC Radio 4 report, asking whether "the prettiest village in England" is a place where we can learn "how to mend our broken society"."Visit Nunney" the community interest group closed down in 2021.

Nunney Castle is a medieval castle at Nunney in the English county of Somerset. Built in the late 14th century by Sir John Delamare on the profits of his involvement in the Hundred Years' War, the moated castle's architectural style, possibly influenced by the design of French castles, has provoked considerable academic debate. Remodelled during the late 16th century, Nunney Castle was damaged during the English Civil War and is now ruined. English Heritage maintains the site as a tourist attraction. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner has described Nunney as "aesthetically the most impressive castle in Somerset."

It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 when it became part of the district of Mendip. The parishes which were part of the district included Beckington, Berkley, Buckland Dinham, Coleford, Frome, Great Elm, Hemington, Kilmersdon, Leigh on Mendip, Lullington, Mells, Norton St Philip, Nunney, Rode, Selwood, Tellisford, Trudoxhill, Upton Noble, Wanstrow, Whatley and Witham Friary.

Frome ( (listen) FROOM) is a town and civil parish in eastern Somerset, England. The town is built on uneven high ground at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, and centres on the River Frome. The town, about 13 miles (21 km) south of Bath, is part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome. The population was 28,559 in 2021.Frome was one of the largest towns in Somerset until the Industrial Revolution, and was larger than Bath from AD 950 until 1650. The town first grew due to the wool and cloth industry; it later diversified into metal-working and printing, although these have declined. The town was enlarged during the 20th century but retains a large number of listed buildings, and most of the centre falls within a conservation area. The town has road and rail transport links and acts as an economic centre for the surrounding area. In its 2018 and 2021 report on the "Best places to live in the UK", The Sunday Times listed Frome as the best in the South West. In April 2019, Time Out listed Frome among 15 of the best weekend breaks from London.
