University Hall (Brown University)

The Brown University Graduate School is the graduate school of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The school offers 51 doctoral programs and 33 master's programs.

The Slavery Memorial is a sculptural memorial on the campus of Brown University that recognizes the institution's 18th century connections to chattel slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. Designed by sculptor Martin Puryear and dedicated in 2014, the memorial stands on the university's Front Green, adjacent to University Hall.

The Van Wickle Gates form the ornamental entrance to Brown University's main campus in Providence, Rhode Island. The gates stand at the intersection of College Street and Prospect Street at the crest of College Hill. Dedicated on June 18, 1901, they stand as a symbol for the campus and its 253-year history.

The College Hill Historic District is located in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. It was designated a National Historic Landmark District on December 30, 1970. The College Hill local historic district, established in 1960 (and expanded in 1990), partially overlaps the national landmark district. Properties within the local historic district are regulated by the city's historic district zoning ordinance, and cannot be altered without approval from the Providence Historic District Commission.

Brown University is a private Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, founded in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. One of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution, Brown was the first college in the United States to codify in its charter that admission and instruction of students was to be equal regardless of their religious affiliation.The university is home to the oldest applied mathematics program in the United States, the oldest engineering program in the Ivy League, and the third-oldest medical program in New England. The university was one of the early doctoral-granting U.S. institutions in the late 19th century, adding masters and doctoral studies in 1887. In 1969, Brown adopted its Open Curriculum after a period of student lobbying. The new curriculum eliminated mandatory "general education" distribution requirements, made students "the architects of their own syllabus" and allowed them to take any course for a grade of satisfactory (Pass) or no-credit (Fail) which is unrecorded on external transcripts. In 1971, Brown's coordinate women's institution, Pembroke College, was fully merged into the university. The university comprises the College, the Graduate School, Alpert Medical School, the School of Engineering, the School of Public Health and the School of Professional Studies. Brown's international programs are organized through the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, and the university is academically affiliated with the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Rhode Island School of Design. In conjunction with the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown offers undergraduate and graduate dual degree programs. Undergraduate admissions are among the most selective in the country, with an overall acceptance rate of 5% for the class of 2026.Brown's main campus is located in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The Edward Dexter House is a historic house in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, built in 1795–1797, with a hip roof topped by a square monitor. Its main facade is five bays wide, with the center bay flanked by two-story pilasters and topped by a small gable pediment. The well-preserved interior provided a template for an early-20th-century museum space designed by the Rhode Island School of Design to house a furniture collection donated by the house's then-owner, Charles Pendleton. The house is one of the few 18th-century houses in the city's College Hill neighborhood. It was originally located at the corner of George and Prospect Streets; in 1860 it was sawed in half and moved in sections to its present location.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The John Hay Library (known colloquially as the Hay) is the second oldest library on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It is located on Prospect Street opposite the Van Wickle Gates. After its construction in 1910, the Hay Library became the main library building on campus, replacing the building now known as Robinson Hall. Today, the John Hay Library is one of five individual libraries that make up the University Library. The Hay houses the University Library's rare books and manuscripts, the University Archives, and the Library's special collections.

The Joseph Haile House (or Gardner House) is an historic house in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. It is a 3+1⁄2-story brick structure, appearing taller than that due to its hillside location and raised basement. It is a well-preserved example of Federal styling, which underwent a careful restoration in the 1930s by George Warren Gardner, who filled the house with early American furniture. The Gardners bequested the property to Brown University, which uses it to house visiting dignitaries.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, nicknamed "the Rock", is the primary teaching and research library for the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It is one of five individual libraries which make up the Brown University Library. The library was named after John D. Rockefeller Jr., who graduated in the class of 1897. The building was constructed between 1962 and 1964 and designed by Danforth Toan. The building drew attention as the first building in the area constructed in the Brutalist style, and alongside the Sciences Library, Graduate Center, and List Art Building, is one of the campus's four significant examples of Brutalist architecture.The library houses Brown University's East Asian Collection, which started in 1961 after Charles Sidney Gardner donated about 30,000 volumes, most of them Chinese. In 1965, a Federal grant led to the formal establishment of the East Asia Language and Area Center, which has since become the East Asian Studies Department. The University began to acquire Japanese works after a grant was received in 1980. The collection itself now includes a Korean collection.The most recent renovations of the "Rock" include the creation of the David and Laura Finn Reading Room (2009), the Patrick Ma Digital Scholarship Lab (2012) and the main floor reading room (2014). The John D. Rockefeller Jr. library should not be confused with the Cambridge University Library at the University of Cambridge which was built with funds from John D. Rockefeller and is colloquially referred to as the Rockefeller Library.

Sayles Memorial Hall is a Richardsonian Romanesque hall on the central campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The granite structure was designed by Alpheus C. Morse and constructed from 1879 to 1881.

The Candace Allen House is a historic house located at 12 Benevolent Street in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Named after Candace Allen (1785-1872) an older sister of Zachariah Allen, a prominent Providence mill-owner. The Federal style house was built in 1818–1820 by local architect John Holden Greene and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is a brick two-story building with a hip roof topped by a small monitor section. It is five bays wide, with a center entry sheltered by a portico supported by Corinthian columns, and an elliptical window above. The interior follows a typical central-hall plan, and has elaborate interior detail including marble mantels, a U-shape stairway, ceiling cornices, undercut moldings, and walnut doors with silver hardware.Candace Allen (1785-1872) was the older sister of Zachariah Allen, a prominent Providence mill-owner and inventor. Her fiancé was killed in the War of 1812, and she did not ever marry. The house was, as of its 1973 National Register listing, still in the hands of the Allen family.

The David Winton Bell Gallery is a contemporary art gallery at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The gallery was established in 1971 through a donation from the Bell family. The Bell Gallery serves as a hub of contemporary art within the university community and beyond, offering a diverse range of exhibitions, programs, and events. It is housed in the Albert and Vera List Art Center, and is part of the Brown Arts Institute.Each year, the gallery features four to five major shows, as well as dozens of student exhibitions. Recent exhibitions have featured work by Elisabeth Subrin, Lisa Reihana, Melvin Edwards, Wendy Edwards, and Carrie Mae Weems.
