Weißenthurm (Verbandsgemeinde)

Weißenthurm is a town in the district of Mayen-Koblenz, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is situated on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite Neuwied, approximately 12 km northwest of Koblenz. The town is spelled with an ß which may be replaced by ss if not available (Weissenthurm). Weißenthurm is the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") Weißenthurm.

Caesar's bridges across the Rhine, the first two bridges on record to cross the Rhine river, were built by Julius Caesar and his legionaries during the Gallic War in 55 BC and 53 BC. Strategically successful, they are also considered masterpieces of military engineering.

Wied-Neuwied was a German statelet in northeastern Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, located northeast of the Rhine River flanking the northern side of the city of Neuwied. Wied-Neuwied emerged from the partitioning of Wied. Its status was elevated from county to principality in 1784. It was mediatised to Nassau and Prussia in 1806. The House of Wied-Neuwied briefly ruled the Principality of Albania in 1914 through William of Albania, the younger son of Prince William. Among other notable members of the family were Prince Alexander Philip Maximilian, the second son of Prince John Frederick Alexander and a famous explorer, ethnologist and naturalist, and Princess Elisabeth, a daughter of Prince Hermann, who married King Carol I of Romania.

Neuwied (German: [nɔʏˈviːt] ) is a town in the north of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, capital of the District of Neuwied. Neuwied lies on the east bank of the Rhine, 12 km northwest of Koblenz, on the railway from Frankfurt am Main to Cologne. The town has 13 suburban administrative districts: Heimbach-Weis, Gladbach, Engers, Oberbieber, Niederbieber, Torney, Segendorf, Altwied, Block, Irlich, Feldkirchen, Heddesdorf and Rodenbach. The largest is Heimbach-Weis, with approximately 8000 inhabitants.

The archaeological site Niederbieber is an important representative of the Federmesser culture. Dating to the end of the Pleistocene, the site is one of the most extensively excavated archaeological sites dating to the late Upper Palaeolithic. Finds and features are extraordinarily well preserved as the site was protected by fallout from the Laacher See volcanic eruption approximately 12,900 years ago. Comprehensive archaeological studies have provided a detailed view of activities and settlement dynamics of hunter-gatherer groups at the end of the ice age.

Kettig is a municipality in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany.

The Nette is a small river in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, a left tributary of the Rhine. It rises in the Eifel, south of Nürburg. The Nette flows east through Mayen before reaching the Rhine between Weißenthurm and Andernach. The Nette is not navigable and has otherwise no strategical importance. It is used in Mayen, among other things, as a supply of the local paper industry. It gives its name to the beer Nette Edel Pils, originally brewed in Weißenthurm (but now brewed in Koblenz by the Koblenzer Brauerei), and the Clinic Nette-Gut of Forensic Psychiatry at Weißenthurm.

Neuwied station is, along with Engers station, a hub of public transport in the town of Neuwied in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and it is located in its west. The station is located on the East Rhine Railway (German: Rechte Rheinstrecke) and is the starting point of the Neuwied–Koblenz railway. In the station forecourt there is a bus station. The station is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 3 station.

The nuclear power station Mülheim-Kärlich lies on the Rhine, about 10 km northwest from Koblenz, close to the town Mülheim-Kärlich in Germany. The operating company was Société Luxembourgeoise de Centrales Nucléaires, a daughter company of RWE. It was the only nuclear power plant in the Rhineland-Palatinate after it was finished in 1986, however, due to problems with the building permit it only operated for 3 years and was taken offline in 1988. Subsequent attempts to bring the plant online continued until 1998 when the supreme court ruled for it to never be restarted.

The Wied is a river in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and a right tributary of the Rhine. The Wied (German pronunciation: [viːt] ) is 103 km (64 mi) long. It flows mainly south-west, through the Westerwald hills. Its source is near Dreifelden. It flows through Altenkirchen, Neustadt (Wied) and Waldbreitbach, and ends in the Rhine in Neuwied.

The Battle of Neuwied (18 April 1797) saw Lazare Hoche lead part of the French Army of Sambre-et-Meuse against Franz von Werneck's Austrian army. The French attack surprised their enemies and broke through their lines. Aside from 1,000 men killed and wounded, Austrian losses included at least 3,000 prisoners, 24 artillery pieces, 60 vehicles, and five colors. For their part, the French lost 2,000 men killed, wounded, and captured. The losses were in vain because Napoleon Bonaparte signed the Preliminaries of Leoben with Austria the same day. The armistice halted the fighting so that both sides could negotiate a peace. The action occurred during the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars.

Mülheim-Kärlich is a town in the district Mayen-Koblenz, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is part of the Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") Weißenthurm. It is situated west of Koblenz, a few km from the Rhine. It is the site of the closed Mülheim-Kärlich Nuclear Power Plant.
