Portage Lakes, Ohio

Coventry Township is one of the nine townships of Summit County, Ohio, United States. The 2020 census found 10,238 people in the township.

The Portage Lakes are a group of glacial kettle lakes and reservoirs in Northeast Ohio. The name comes from an old Indian portage path that connected the Cuyahoga River flowing north to Lake Erie and the Tuscarawas River, a tributary of the Muskingum River, which flows south to the Ohio River. This proved advantageous for the Indians and early settlers as navigation from Lake Erie to the Ohio was possible with only an eight-mile portage. Portage Lakes State Park lies at one of the highest points of the state and on a major watershed divide in Ohio. Some water from the lakes reaches Lake Erie and some flows to the Ohio River.There is an unincorporated community named Portage Lakes in Summit County, near 41°00′26″N 081°31′37″W Elevation: 1,053 feet (321 m), in the area. The area became an important trading post for settlers and Indians. It was a recognized landmark during the War of 1812, serving as a rendezvous point of American troops. The old Indian portage path was part of the ancient boundary between the Six Nations and the Western Indians.The city of Akron was laid out in 1825 and was first settled by Irish laborers and others working on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Once the canal was completed, the town flourished. Several important industries brought prosperity to the area including stoneware potteries, sewer pipe manufacturing, the match industry and, most recently, the tire and rubber industry. At one time, the Blue Diamond Match Company in Akron used three million board feet (7,000 m³) of white pine lumber per year for the manufacture of its matches.Several of the Portage Lakes were built as feeder reservoirs for the canals to maintain the required depth of 4 feet (1.2 m). The lakes were used for this purpose until the canals were abandoned in 1913. The lakes were then used to meet the water needs of the local industries. Some portions of the remnant canals in the Akron area can still be boated.The Ohio Department of Public Works maintained the canal lands for recreational purposes until 1949 when the Portage Lakes were transferred to the newly formed Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation.

Coventry High School is a public high school located in Coventry Township, near Akron, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Coventry Local School District.

The 2011 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was the 13th WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, held August 4–7 at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Adam Scott was the winner on the South Course, four strokes ahead of Luke Donald and Rickie Fowler. This tournament was the third of four World Golf Championships events held in 2011.

The 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was a professional golf tournament held August 6–9 on the South Course of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the 17th WGC-Bridgestone Invitational tournament, and the third of the World Golf Championships events in 2015. Shane Lowry shot a final-round 66 to win his first WGC event, two strokes ahead of runner-up Bubba Watson.

The 2005 WGC-NEC Invitational was a golf tournament that was contested from August 18–21, 2005 over the South Course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the seventh WGC-Bridgestone Invitational tournament, and the second of four World Golf Championships events held in 2005. World number 1 Tiger Woods won the tournament to claim his ninth World Golf Championships title, which was his fourth Invitational title. He won by one shot over Chris DiMarco, at 6-under-par 274.

The 1975 PGA Championship was the 57th PGA Championship, played August 7–10 at the South Course of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Jack Nicklaus, an Ohio native, won the fourth of his five PGA Championships and the fourteenth of his eighteen major titles, two strokes ahead of runner-up Bruce Crampton. He was also the 54-hole leader, four strokes ahead of Crampton.It was the second major of the year for Nicklaus, who won his fifth green jacket in April at the Masters, and the fourth of five times that he won two majors in the same calendar year.Through 2021, this was the fourth and most recent time a player won the Masters and PGA Championship in the same calendar year. Nicklaus had previously won both in 1963, preceded by Jack Burke Jr. (1956) and Sam Snead (1949). Nicklaus also held both titles after a Masters win in 1972, and Tiger Woods held all four major titles after his Masters win in 2001. This was the third PGA Championship at the South Course, which previously hosted in 1960 and 1966. It also a former venue for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which began in 1976 as the "World Series of Golf" on the PGA Tour, preceded by the American Golf Classic, which debuted in 1961.

The 2004 WGC-NEC Invitational was a golf tournament that was contested from August 19–22, 2004 over the South Course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the sixth WGC-NEC Invitational tournament, and the second of four World Golf Championships events held in 2004. Stewart Cink won the tournament to capture his first World Golf Championships title.

The 2000 WGC-NEC Invitational was a golf tournament from August 24–27, 2000 over the South Course at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the second WGC-NEC Invitational tournament, and the second of four World Golf Championships events in 2000. World number 1 Tiger Woods won the tournament to retain the WGC-NEC Invitational and claim his third World Golf Championships title. He won by an eleven-stroke margin, and set the tournament record for aggregate score (259) and score to-par (−21), having tied José María Olazábal's course record of 61 in the second round. His final approach to the 18th green was famously in the dark, hitting his iron shot to within a couple of feet of the hole. He would make birdie to seal the victory.

The 2016 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was a professional golf tournament played June 30 – July 3 on the South Course of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the 18th WGC-Bridgestone Invitational tournament, and the third of the World Golf Championships events in 2016. The event was played more than a month earlier than usual, due to the 2016 Summer Olympics. It was only sanctioned by the PGA Tour, because it ran opposite the Open de France the European Tour did not co-sanction the tournament this year. Dustin Johnson won his first WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and third WGC overall.

Firestone Country Club is a private golf club in the United States, located in Akron, Ohio. It was a regular stop on the PGA Tour and has hosted the PGA Championship three times. It is the current home of the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship through 2026. The club comprises three courses–those of the North, South, and West. In 1974 the club hosted three televised golf events: the American Golf Classic, the CBS Golf Classic and the World Series of Golf. No other club has hosted three televised golf events in the same calendar year.One of four World Golf Championships constituent events, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, directed by the International Federation of PGA Tours and sanctioned on the PGA and European Tours, was contested at the club with the final event at the club held in 2018. The North and West courses also serve as the home course for the University of Akron Zips golf team.

The 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was a professional golf tournament played August 1–4 on the South Course of Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It was the 15th WGC-Bridgestone Invitational tournament, and the third of the World Golf Championships (WGC) events held in 2013. Aided by a second round 61 (−9), Tiger Woods won the event for the eighth time, seven strokes ahead of runners-up Keegan Bradley and Henrik Stenson. It was Woods' 18th WGC victory. The win was also the 79th Tour title for Woods.
