Luppitt

The Luppitt Inn is the only public house at Luppitt, Devon. Located in the front rooms of a farmhouse, the building is constructed from stone, rendered on one side and includes a tiled roof. The main house, still part of a working farm, was built in the early 19th century. The pub entrance is on the north side of the house, leading to a two-roomed pub. The serving room includes a simple counter made of matchboard, and some simple shelves, as well as a few seats, whilst the second room includes a brick fireplace. The toilets are outside, across the yard. The only table in the pub is covered in puzzles. The unique layout has meant that the pub is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.Previously known as the Red Lion Inn, Luppitt, it is a farmhouse pub which would have been common around England in the 19th century. One of the last small, informal alehouses in Britain, it does have the licence to sell alcohol. However, it sells only one beer, brewed locally at Otter Brewery, drawn directly from the cask; ciders in a tin and there is a small selection of spirits and the only food on offer is peanut snacks. The room has no till, music or electrical distractions, and the only staff member for many years was the landlady, Vera Mary Wright (commonly known as Mary), latterly more often than not supplemented by members of her family who nevertheless rarely serve anyone but the local regulars. Mary had a reputation for testing new customers by handing them three dimensional metal puzzles to solve. The pub has been run by Wright's family for more than 100 years; Mary inherited it from her husband, William Wright, who in turn inherited it from his father, Charles Wright. Alas Mary Wright died on 23 December 2020 and the running of the pub is now solely in the hands of her relatives.

Hartridge Hill is an elongated, peat hill situated in the Luppitt catchment area of East Devon, England. Mostly privately owned and primarily used for farming this is, with a peak rising 261 metres (856 ft) asl, one of the highest spots in the Otter Valley. At its highest and most southerly point there is a tumulus or burial mound. At its most southerly point lies the hamlet of Beacon.

Dumpdon Hill is an Iron Age Hill Fort near Honiton in Devon. Somewhat overshadowed by its better known neighbour Hembury Fort it is nonetheless as impressive an earthwork. Situated above the valley of the River Otter, it is one of the largest, and most distinct hills in the area due to a large clump of beech trees situated at its summit. The top of Dumpdon is owned and maintained by the National Trust and is 250 metres (800 ft) above sea level.

Mohuns Ottery or Mohun's Ottery ( "moon's awtrey"), is a house and historic manor in the parish of Luppitt, 1 mile south-east of the village of Luppitt and 4 miles north-east of Honiton in east Devon, England. From the 14th to the 16th centuries it was a seat of the Carew family. Several manorial court rolls survive at the Somerset Heritage Centre, Taunton, Somerset.The old manor house burnt down in 1868 and was completely rebuilt as a farmhouse, categorised as a grade II listed building since 1955. The ruins of a mid-16th century gatehouse lie to the south of the house; these and the adjoining garden walls, probably built in the mid-19th century at the same time as the farmhouse, are grade II* listed. The house now has six reception rooms and six bedrooms. Around the courtyard are a cottage, stables and farm buildings. The River Otter forms part of the eastern boundary of the estate. In January 2014 the house with 228 acres was offered for sale for £3.5 million.

Dunkeswell is a village and civil parish in East Devon, England, located about 5 miles (8.0 km) north of the town of Honiton. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 1,553, reducing to 1,361 at the 2011 Census. There is an electoral ward with the same name whose population at the above census was 2,000. The parish is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Hemyock, Luppitt, Combe Raleigh, Awliscombe, Broadhembury and Sheldon.

Combe Raleigh () is a village and civil parish in the county of Devon, England. The village lies about 1.5 miles north of the town of Honiton, and the parish is surrounded, clockwise from the north, by the parishes of Luppitt, Honiton, Awliscombe and Dunkeswell.The word 'Combe' is of Celtic origin meaning 'valley' (the same as cwm) whilst the name 'Raleigh' comes from the Raleigh family's ownership of the village in the thirteenth century. The 15th-century parish church (St. Nicholas) has three bells and its minister is shared with the nearby village of Awliscombe. The village has no shops. In the past twenty to thirty years agriculture has declined considerably in the area, but the village does have three horticulture-based businesses. The most recently opened business being St. Isidore Agriculture Ltd.

Monkton is a village and civil parish on the River Otter, about 2 miles north east of Honiton railway station, in the East Devon district, in the county of Devon, England. In 2011 the parish had a population of 169. The parish touches Cotleigh, Upottery, Honiton, Offwell and Luppitt. The parish is in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

RAF Upottery (also known as Smeatharpe) is a former Royal Air Force station in East Devon, England. The airfield is located near the village of Upottery, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of the town of Honiton. Opened in 1944, it was used by the Royal Air Force, United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and United States Navy. During the war it was used primarily as a transport airfield and for antisubmarine patrols. It was closed in 1948 after the end of the war and today the remains of the airfield are located on private property being used as agricultural fields. Upottery received much attention in 2001 when it appeared in the first episode of the television mini-series Band of Brothers. It was from Upottery that Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division boarded Douglas C-47 transports and made their first combat jump into Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Wolford Chapel in Devon, England, is the burial place of John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada. It is the territory of the Canadian province of Ontario, and flies the Flag of Canada despite being in the English countryside. The chapel was part of the Simcoe Estate at Dunkeswell, near Honiton, Devon, in South West England and was built on John Graves Simcoe's commission in 1802. The Simcoes had purchased an estate at Wolford and built Wolford Lodge. Following Simcoe's death on 26 October 1806 the estate remained with the family until 1923 but was eventually sold and some parts broken up. The Chapel, alongside most of the estate, was acquired by British publisher Sir Geoffrey Harmsworth. Consideration of what to do with the chapel remained, and various ideas were put forward including transporting it to Canada. However, in 1966, Harmsworth decided to donate the chapel to the John Graves Simcoe Memorial Foundation on behalf of the people of Ontario. On 27 September 1966, just under 160 years after Simcoe's death, Harmsworth gave a deed to then-Premier of Ontario John Robarts, alongside a deed making a permanent right of way to access the property, presented by A. G. LeMarchant. In 1982 the Ontario Heritage Trust acquired the property. The chapel is a Grade II listed building. It is a small building, rectangular in plan, built of local stone rubble with limestone ashlar details and a slate roof. Simcoe's wife, Elizabeth Simcoe and some of their children are also buried at the site, which is maintained by local people on behalf of the John Graves Simcoe Memorial Foundation.

Upottery (originally Up Ottery) is a rural village, civil parish and former manor in East Devon, England.

Abbey is a hamlet in the English county of Devon. It is located in the Blackdown Hills, a group of hills that border both Devon and Somerset. Dunkeswell Abbey is situated in the hamlet.

Southey and Gotleigh Moors (grid reference ST192110) is an 81.3 hectare (200.1 acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, notified in 1988. Southey and Gotleigh Moors is a mosaic of valley mire, acid-marsh grassland and alder-birch carr. The diversity of the site is enhanced by the presence of the Bolham River and small areas of standing water which increase the amphibian and invertebrate interest. The nationally scarce leaf beetle (Phyllobrotica quadrimaculata) has been found here.
