Chicago Motor Speedway

The 2001 Target Grand Prix, known informally as the 2001 Grand Prix of Chicago, was a Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) motor race held on July 29, 2001 at Chicago Motor Speedway in Cicero, Illinois, USA. It was the 12th round of the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series season. Kenny Bräck won his third race of the season and of his CART career for Team Rahal ahead of Patrick Carpentier and Gil de Ferran. Bräck's quick pace allowed him to make up ground in the second half of the race and ultimately win the race itself, further distancing himself from second place Hélio Castroneves in the drivers' standings. Carpentier and Forsythe Racing were in the middle of a powerful surge in form, with teammates earning podiums at Cleveland and Toronto and Carpentier taking his first career win just a week earlier at the Michigan 500. de Ferran was also beginning an improvement in form and consistency that would make him a championship contender at the end of the season. The race saw much clean on-track action and multiple lead changes, something that was not common for open-wheel cars on oval tracks. Only three cars retired from the race, and only one was a result of contact with the barriers.

Hawthorne Race Course is a racetrack for horse racing in Stickney/Cicero, Illinois, near Chicago. The oldest continually run family-owned racetrack in North America, in 2009 the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for 65 Thoroughbred racetracks in North America. Of the top ten, Hawthorne was ranked No. 8.

St. Mary of Częstochowa in Cicero (Polish: Kościół Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej) is an historic church of the Archdiocese of Chicago located in Cicero, Illinois. It is a prime example of the Polish Cathedral style of churches in both its opulence and grand scale. A sculpture of Christ the King by famed sculptor Professor Czesław Dźwigaj, who also cast the monumental bronze doors at St. Hyacinth's Basilica in Chicago stands in front of the church. The church is also well known as the site where Al Capone's sister Mafalda married in 1930. The parish of St. Mary of Częstochowa serves a diverse population. A number of parishioners, still actively involved, lay claim to having parents and grandparents who pioneered the parish. A young Polish immigrant population, although not living in the area, have strong ties to the Black Madonna and call St. Mary of Częstochowa their spiritual home. Just as great numbers of Poles and Germans settled in the Hawthorne neighborhood of Cicero over a hundred years ago, so today large numbers of people from Mexico have settled here, and the Hispanic presence is very much part of the parish. St. Mary of Częstochowa offers mass in Polish, Spanish and English and is currently home to 1,450 families.

Little Village Lawndale High School Campus is a public high school located in the South Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The campus contains four autonomous small schools with some shared facilities. LVLHS has a unique campus design that reflects its original inception from a hunger strike in 2001. In 2001, 14 parents and grandparents staged a 19-day hunger strike to urge politicians to fulfill promises to build a high school in the child and adolescent dense Little Village neighborhood.

Cicero is a station on Metra's BNSF Line, located in Cicero, Illinois. The station is 7.0 miles (11.3 km) away from Union Station, the eastern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Cicero is in zone B. As of 2018, Cicero is the 176th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 136 weekday boardings. The station is located east of the Cicero Railroad Yard, and several blocks south of the Cicero station on the Cermak Branch of the Chicago 'L''s Pink Line. Metra rebuilt the station's platforms and shelters in 2010.

Morton College is a public community college in Cicero, Illinois. It is the second oldest community college in the state. While the campus itself was constructed in 1975, the college was established in 1924. Before the construction of the campus, the college was housed in the same building as the local high school. It is named after Julius Sterling Morton, a Nebraska newspaper editor and politician who served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. Land was acquired for an athletics field in 1994. Intercollegiate athletics for men include baseball, basketball, soccer, and cross country. Women's sports include volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer and softball. The college is a National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium training center. It also operates a low-power FM station, WZQC-LP, at 99.1 MHz.

Cicero (originally known as Hawthorne) is a suburb of Chicago and an incorporated town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 85,268. making it the 11th largest municipality in Illinois. The town of Cicero is named after Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman statesman and orator.

Cicero Township is one of 29 townships in Cook County, Illinois, USA. It is coextensive with the town of Cicero. As of the 2010 census, its population was 83,891.

Garfield Ridge is the 56th of Chicago's 77 community areas. Located 10 miles (16 km) from the Loop, it is on the city's far southwest side. As of 2017, the area had 36,396 inhabitants. Named for Garfield Boulevard and a nearby glacial ridge, the area suffered from land of poor quality and was historically used as a transportation corridor rather than a place of residence. Annexed to Chicago piecemeal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area's population surged during the 1920s after Midway International Airport was constructed. The decline in the use of Midway in favor of O'Hare International Airport led to a corresponding decline in population, which transitioned from being predominately Eastern European to having a substantial amount of Hispanic people. By 2017, Hispanics comprised almost half of the area's residents. In addition to Midway Airport, the area is home to other transportation.

The Storkline Furniture Corporation Factory is a historic factory building at 4400-4418 W. 26th Street in the South Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The Storkline Furniture Corporation, a nationally popular children's furniture company, produced all of its furniture at the factory. Founded in 1915 as the Glass Novelty Company, the corporation renamed itself after its most popular product in the 1920s and built a new factory in 1925. Chicago architect Sidney Minchin designed the brick building, incorporating Sullivanesque terra cotta decorations in the facade. As one of the only companies specializing in children's furniture, Storkline dominated the market in the 1920s and 1930s, and it saw continued success in the following decades. It produced furniture at the factory until another furniture company bought the corporation in the 1960s.The factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 6, 2013.

The Hawthorne Smoke Shop (later known as the Ship) was a gambling casino owned by American gangster Al Capone and run by fellow gangsters Frankie Pope and Pete Penovich. It was located in Cicero, Illinois, where Capone had fled to escape Chicago police. Although shut down temporarily by raids several times during its existence, it provided a significant amount of revenue, earning half a million dollars in a two-year period. Leslie Shumway, a cashier who worked there, testified in court that horse betting, roulette, craps, blackjack, and birdcage (chuck-a-luck) all took place there. The profits from the Hawthorne Smoke Shop were one piece of evidence used against Capone at his trial in 1931.

The Hawthorne Works was a large factory complex of the Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois. Named after the original name of the town, Hawthorne, it opened in 1905 and operated until 1983. At its peak of operations, Hawthorne employed 45,000 workers, producing large quantities of telephone equipment, but also a wide variety of consumer products. The facility is well-known for the industrial studies held there in the 1920s and the Hawthorne effect is named for the works.
