Old Burdon

Burdon is a village and civil parish in the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, England. It is south of the city centre. The north-west of the parish includes part of the Doxford Park estate. It has a population of 971. There is currently no parish council.

Murton is a village in County Durham, England. Lying eight miles (13 km) east of the city of Durham and six miles (9.7 km) south of Sunderland, it has a population of 4,534, increasing to 7,676 at the 2011 Census.Originally a rural agricultural hamlet called Morton, the discovery of coal beneath its fields in the 19th century transformed it into an industrial community. 'Morton became known as Murton Colliery or Murton-in-the-Whins following the sinking of the pit in 1838 by South Hetton Coal Company, and the village was a productive coal mining community for over a century. The pit employed over 1000 men at its peak and featured in a Picture Post article showing the 'vesting' of the mine at nationalisation in 1947.The village also had the South East Durham Cooperative Bakery and a Northern Bus Company garage as added sources of jobs. In 1955 a by product works for coal was established for the production mainly of coke. The mine and other employment opportunities closed in the 1990s along with many other County Durham mines and now the old spoil heaps are host to a retail outlet development Dalton Park, bringing much needed new employment.

Warden Law is a village and civil parish in the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, England. It is south-west of Sunderland city centre. It has a population of 33. At the 2011 Census the population remained less than 100. Details were included in the civil parish of Hetton. It is home to a karting track called Karting North East and the Warden Law Kart Club. Just over the hill is a new children's farm activity centre Down at the Farm The site is also the location of several prehistoric burial sites and other neolithic groundworks and remains. The site was also the location of the Warden Law winding engine from 1822 until 1959 which was used by the Hetton Coal Company railway to power one of the very earliest non animal powered railways seen anywhere in the world.

Greenhill is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles south of Sunderland, and adjoins Murton.

Murton A.F.C. (formerly known as Murton Colliery Welfare) were a football team based in Murton near Durham in County Durham, England who last played Wearside League. They were affiliated to the Durham Football Association and were Full Members of The Football Association. They play at Welfare Park, which has one stand (one covered standing area) with a capacity of about 150. After repeated vandalism over the years demolition of the main stand began in June 2007. The floodlights were removed in early 2008 after being declared unfit for purpose. A second covered stand behind the top goal was removed prior to the beginning of the 2009–10 season. The average attendance from season to season stands at around 25–30 but the record attendance is 3,500 spectators for a Durham County Cup game against Spennymoor United in 1951.

Great Eppleton Wind Farm is a wind farm near Hetton-le-Hole, England. It is owned and operated by E.ON UK. Constructed in 1997, it was notable for originally consisting of twin-bladed turbines, as most wind turbines have three blades. On 29 September, E.ON announced it would replace these with four new REpower MM92 turbines giving a nameplate capacity of 8.2 MW.

Silksworth is a suburb of the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The area can be distinguished into two parts, old Silksworth, the original village and township which has existed since the early middle ages, and New Silksworth, the industrial age colliery village which expanded north west of the original settlement. The former colliery being situated to the north west of the village near to the Gilley Law. The population of the ward was 10,931 at the 2011 census.

Doxford Park (known locally as Doxy Park) is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, located to the south-west of the city centre. Once part of the historical township of Silksworth in the Middle Ages, Doxford Park consisted of agrarian land and a manor before being constructed into a modern housing estate in the 1960s. Surrounded by the A19, the suburb now houses one of the city's largest business districts, the Doxford International Business Park.

Hesledon Moor East is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the County Durham district in east County Durham, England. It is located on the southern edge of the village of Murton, 10 km south of Sunderland and a little under 2 km north-east of Hesledon Moor West SSSI. The site consists of two non-contiguous parcels of land. Most of the larger portion is covered by unimproved neutral grassland, a habitat that was once common on the Magnesian Limestone plateau of east Durham but is now reduced to scattered fragments, of which this is the best surviving example. The dominant grassland species include common bent, Agrostis capillaris, sweet vernal-grass, Anthoxanthum odoratum, and crested dog's-tail, Cynosurus cristatus. In places the grassland displays a weakly developed acidic character; common bent and sheep's fescue, Festuca ovina, are the dominant species. A short distance to the south, the smaller parcel supports a base and nutrient-rich soligenous fen-type vegetation in which the dominant species varies between purple moor-grass, Molinia caerulea, and meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria.

Cherry Knowle Hospital was a mental health facility in Ryhope, Tyne and Wear, England. It was managed by the South of Tyne and Wearside Mental Health NHS Trust.
