White Plains, New York

The Battle of White Plains was a battle in the New York and New Jersey campaign of the American Revolutionary War, fought on October 28, 1776 near White Plains, New York. Following the retreat of George Washington's Continental Army northward from New York City, British General William Howe landed troops in Westchester County, intending to cut off Washington's escape route. Alerted to this move, Washington retreated farther, establishing a position in the village of White Plains but failed to establish firm control over local high ground. Howe's troops drove Washington's troops from a hill near the village; following this loss, Washington ordered the Americans to retreat farther north. Later British movements chased Washington across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania. Washington then crossed the Delaware and surprised a brigade of Hessian troops in the December 26 Battle of Trenton.

The Westchester County Center is a 5,000-seat multi-purpose arena in White Plains, New York. It hosts various local concerts and sporting events for the area. The County Center was conceived by the Westchester Recreation Commission in 1924 as a multi-purpose indoor recreational facility to host community programs and income-producing commercial events. It was designed by the architectural firm of Walker & Gillette, and built and decorated in the Art Deco style. The construction project cost approximately $785,000; a $16-million rehabilitation was completed in 1988. For over 90 years the County Center has been Westchester's premier setting for thousands of concerts, trade shows, sports events, meetings, seminars, theatrical presentations, conventions and civic and community events. On the weekend of May 22, 1930, the Westchester County Center Grand opening gala was held, attracting thousands from all over Westchester to hear such notable musicians as the pianist Percy Grainger, Metropolitan Opera Company tenor Edward Johnson, organist Palmer Christian and more than 1,500 local choral group performers. In the ensuing years, generations of County Center audiences have been treated to performances by such greats as Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Joan Sutherland, James Brown, Kenny Rogers, Janis Joplin and John Sebastian, Jimi Hendrix, The Who along with the Harlem Globetrotters, World Wrestling Entertainment, and the Royal Hanneford Circus, one of the longest running events at the Center to date.

The Jacob Purdy House was used as General George Washington's headquarters in 1778 and possibly in 1776 during the Battle of White Plains in the American Revolutionary War. Originally constructed by Samuel Horton, it was purchased by Jacob Purdy's father, Samuel Purdy in 1730. It came into the possession of Jacob Purdy about 1785, in the aftermath of the war when some of the family had fled as United Empire Loyalists.In the 1960s it was repaired and restored, and in 1973 the structure was moved to its present location. A further renovation was conducted around 1980, involving both professional craftsmen and local teenagers in an apprentice program. The Jacob Purdy House is now the headquarters of the White Plains Historical Society. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

White Plains station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line, located in White Plains, New York. It is 22.3 miles (35.9 km) from Grand Central Terminal, and the average travel time varies between 33 and 51 minutes (depending on if a train is express or local). With 9,166 daily commuters as of 2006, White Plains is the busiest Metro-North station in Westchester County, the busiest non-terminal or transfer station on the Metro-North system, and the first/last stop outside New York City on most upper Harlem Line express trains. Though it is not a terminal station, White Plains is one of the key stations on the Harlem Line. Its downtown White Plains location is not far from many businesses and office buildings making it very convenient to commuters and making it a stop for all off-peak trains and most peak trains regardless of terminal location. A short walk from the station is the White Plains TransCenter, a terminal/transfer point for many Bee-Line buses as well as intercity buses (Greyhound Lines, Leprechaun Lines, Short Line Bus, and Trailways of New York) and Connecticut Transit's I-Bus to Stamford, Connecticut. Pace University's Graduate Center is located across the street from the White Plains station, while Pace Law School's 12-acre (49,000 m2) campus lies several blocks away on North Broadway. Mercy College, Berkeley College, as well as The College of Westchester are also located within walking distance of the station. The Westchester campus of Fordham University, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) away, is served by the station. The station is located in the Zone 4 Metro-North fare zone.

White Plains TransCenter is an intermodal transit center in White Plains, New York. It serves as a terminal/transfer point for many Bee-Line Buses, as well as intercity buses, and taxicabs. The terminal is located along Ferris Avenue north of Hamilton Street (westbound NY 119), diagonally across from the White Plains station of Metro-North Railroad, and includes a parking garage located next door to the railroad station, across that street. Ferris Avenue is a one-way street north of Main Street (eastbound NY 119), and is flanked by northbound and southbound buses only lanes between Hamilton Street and Water Street. The main building of the TransCenter can be found on the block along Ferris Avenue to the west, Water Street to the south, Lexington Avenue to the west, and New Street to the north, which is also covered by the building itself. The parking garage across the street also contains bicycle racks on the northwest corner of Ferris Avenue and New Street, which is also the entrance to the station parking lot north of NY 119.

The College of Westchester (CW) is a private for-profit college in White Plains, New York. It offers Bachelor's degrees and Associate degrees along with certificate options during the day, evening, Saturday, and online with programs in business, accounting, allied health, digital media and technology.

White Plains Rural Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in the city of White Plains, Westchester County, New York. The cemetery was organized in 1854 and designed in 1855. It contains miles of narrow, paved roads, none of which is in a straight line. The roads create circular and lozenge-shaped areas for burials. Also on the property is a former church, now cemetery office. It was built in 1797, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-by-three-bay frame building with a high-pitched gable roof. It was modified for office use in 1881. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Presbyterian Rest for Convalescents, also known as the Y.W.C.A. of White Plains and Central Westchester, is a historic convalescent home located at White Plains, Westchester County, New York. It was built in 1913, and is a 3+1⁄2-story, "H"-shaped building in the Tudor Revival style. The two lower stories are in brick and the upper stories in half-timbering and stucco. It has a tiled gable roof with dormer windows. The section connecting the two wings includes the main entrance, which features stone facing and Tudor arches. The connected Acheson Wallace Hall was built in 1972. The building housed a convalescent home until 1967, after which it was acquired by the Y.W.C.A. and operated as a residence for women.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

The Galleria at White Plains is a soon to be defunct shopping mall located in downtown White Plains, New York, US, a commercial and residential suburb 20 miles (32 km) north of New York City. As of 2022, the mall currently maintains such major retail staples as Forever 21, and H&M. On December 21, 2022, it was announced that the Galleria at White Plains will be permanently closing in March 2023 to replace the mall with a mixed use site.

North White Plains station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line, located in the North White Plains neighborhood of White Plains, New York. It is the north terminal for most trains that run local to the south and, until 1984, was the northern limit of electrification. Adjacent to the station is a yard/support facility for trains, one of two on the line (Southeast is the other). It is 23.8 miles (38.3 km) from Grand Central Terminal. Travel time varies from 37 minutes to one hour depending on if the train is express or local. The station is in the city of White Plains, and lies close to the hamlet of North White Plains in North Castle. The station is the northernmost station in the Zone 4 Metro-North fare zone.

The Bar Building is a historic commercial building designed by architect Benjamin Levitan and located at White Plains, Westchester County, New York.

Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. was fatally shot by police on November 19, 2011, in White Plains, New York. After his LifeAid medical alert necklace was inadvertently triggered, police came to his home and demanded that he open his front door. Despite his objections and statements that he did not need help, the police broke down Chamberlain's door. According to police, Chamberlain charged at them with a knife and he was tasered, and then fatally shot. Chamberlain was a 68-year-old, black, retired Marine, and a 20-year veteran of the Westchester County Department of Corrections. He wore the medical alert pendant due to a chronic heart problem.The shooting was the topic of the 2019 film The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain.
