East Shoreham, New York

Wardenclyffe Tower (1901–1917), also known as the Tesla Tower, was an early experimental wireless transmission station designed and built by Nikola Tesla on Long Island in 1901–1902, located in the village of Shoreham, New York. Tesla intended to transmit messages, telephony, and even facsimile images across the Atlantic Ocean to England and to ships at sea based on his theories of using the Earth to conduct the signals. His decision to increase the scale of the facility and implement his ideas of wireless power transmission to better compete with Guglielmo Marconi's radio-based telegraph system was met with refusal to fund the changes by the project's primary backer, financier J. P. Morgan. Additional investment could not be found, and the project was abandoned in 1906, never to become operational. In an attempt to satisfy Tesla's debts, the tower was demolished for scrap in 1917 and the property taken in foreclosure in 1922. For 50 years, Wardenclyffe was a processing facility producing photography supplies. Many buildings were added to the site and the land it occupies has been trimmed down from 200 acres (81 ha) to 16 acres (6.5 ha) but the original, 94 by 94 ft (29 by 29 m), brick building designed by Stanford White remains standing to this day. In the 1980s and 2000s, hazardous waste from the photographic era was cleaned up, and the site was sold and cleared for new development. A grassroots campaign to save the site succeeded in purchasing the property in 2013, with plans to build a future museum dedicated to Nikola Tesla. In 2018 the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Shoreham was a station on the Wading River Extension on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. This is an abandoned station just east of the intersection of North Country Road and Randall Road, along what is now access for Long Island Power Authority power lines.

The Josiah Woodhull House is a historic building. Built circa 1720 by the son of Richard Woodhull, the founder of Brookhaven Town. Located on the border of East Shoreham and Wading River, it is the oldest standing building in the area.

Shoreham-Wading River High School is a public secondary school located in Shoreham, New York. The school serves about 800 students in grades 9 to 12 in the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District.

The Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant was a completed General Electric nuclear boiling water reactor located adjacent to Long Island Sound in East Shoreham, New York. The plant was built between 1973 and 1984 by the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO). The plant faced considerable public opposition after the 1979 Three Mile Island accident and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. There were large protests and two dozen local groups opposed the plant. In 1983, Suffolk County determined that the county could not be safely evacuated in the event of a serious nuclear accident at the plant. Governor Mario Cuomo ordered state officials not to approve any LILCO-sponsored evacuation plan—effectively preventing the plant from operating at full capacity. The plant was completed in 1984 and in 1985 LILCO received federal permission for low-power (5 percent power) tests. By 1989, it became apparent that not enough local communities would sign on to the evacuation plan for the plant ever to be able to open. On May 19, 1989, LILCO agreed not to operate the plant in a deal with the state under which most of the $6 billion cost of the unused plant was passed on to Long Island residents. In 1992, the Long Island Power Authority bought the plant from LILCO. The plant was fully decommissioned in 1994.

Shoreham is an incorporated village in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 531 at the 2010 census. It is officially known as the Incorporated Village of Shoreham.

Brookhaven State Park is a 1,638-acre (6.63 km2) state park in Wading River and Ridge, New York, approximately 74 miles (119 km) east of New York City. Established in 1971, the park land was formerly the property of Brookhaven National Laboratory. Protecting a large amount of the Long Island Pine Barrens, the park also contains scattered wetlands.Brookhaven State Park is located along the east side William Floyd Parkway, between NY 25 and NY 25A. The park contains 25 miles (40 km) of multi-use trails.

Benjamin King Woodhull House is a historic home located at Wading River in Suffolk County, New York. It was built in 1750, and is two story, side hall type dwelling of wood-frame construction with secondary extensions to the south and east. Also on the property is an outhouse.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Tuthill-Lapham House, also known as Friendly Hall, is a historic home located at Wading River in Suffolk County, New York. The oldest section is a Federal style three story building with a gambrel roof, built around 1820. Attached is an addition from 1838 and a two-story addition to the west dated 1869. A kitchen wing was added in the 1920s.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Rocky Point was a station on the Wading River Extension on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. This abandoned station was just east Broadway between King Road & Prince Road, along what is now access for Long Island Power Authority power lines.

Rocky Point is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Brookhaven, New York, United States. As of the 2010 United States census, the CDP population was 14,014.

Wading River was the terminus of the abandoned Wading River Extension on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. This is an abandoned station just outside south of downtown Wading River, and was located on Wading River-Manor Road (former Suffolk CR 25) north of New York State Route 25A.
