Canaan, New York

Queechy Lake is a lake in Canaan, Columbia County, New York. Situated near the Massachusetts state border, the lake is 40 feet (12 m) deep and contains a surface area of 141 acres (0.57 km2). The name comes from the Native American Mahican name Quis-sich-kook, of unknown meaning. The lake is located near two major roads, New York State Route 295 and New York State Route 22. Among the present fish species are brown bullhead, brown trout, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, pumpkinseed, bluegill, rock bass, rainbow trout, black crappie and yellow perch. Queechy Lake is a natural body of water; however, sometime prior to 1910, the water levels were raised as a result of the construction of a dam along the Stony Kill, a tributary of Queechy Lake. The purpose of the dam was to store water that would supply mills located downstream. In the early 19th century, a summer of dry weather contributed to decreased water levels, which exposed a muddy surface at the lower end of the lake.

Donnelly House is a historic home located at New Lebanon in Columbia County, New York. It was built about 1760 and is a modestly scaled saltbox style residence. It is a two-story, three-bay, center chimney, frame dwelling with narrow siding on a fieldstone foundation. It measures 38 feet, 7 inches wide and 26 feet, 1/2 inch deep. Also on the property are two small barns. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The Lace House, also known as the Uriah Edwards House, is located on state highway NY 22 in Canaan, New York, United States. It is a frame house built in the early 19th century. It was designed by the Fuller Brothers in a more formal version of the Federal style brought from New England by settlers from that region at the time of its construction. The original kitchen wing was replaced in the early 20th century. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Elisha Gilbert House is a historic home located at New Lebanon in Columbia County, New York. Built in 1794, the home is a massive, two story frame Federal style residence with a gambrel roof and a five bay facade with a center entrance pavilion and clapboard siding. The attic level once held a Masonic Lodge meeting hall. Also on the property is a family cemetery and 19th century barn.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Shaker Village Work Group was a recreational summer camp and teen educational program that occupied historic Shaker land and buildings in New Lebanon, New York. The property was purchased by founders Jerome (Jerry) and Sybil A. Count from the Mount Lebanon Shaker Village community in 1946, and was opened to its first group of young "villagers" as the Shaker Village Work Camp in 1947. Around 1960, the Work Camp's name was changed to the Shaker Village Work Group. Operating until 1973, the Shaker Village Work Group was noteworthy as a program that gave urban youths the opportunity to learn skilled hands-on work through folk crafts, for its efforts to preserve Shaker architecture and culture, for its role in the American folk music revival of the 1950s and 60s, and for its influence on the 1960s counterculture movement. During its twenty-six year span the Shaker Village Work Group presented a microcosm of American work and political ideals, weaving together the Protestant work ethic and communitarianism of the Shakers, the labor movement's celebration of ordinary working class manual labor, and libertarian ideals of self-sufficiency and self-ownership.

The Abode of the Message is a retreat center in New Lebanon, NY which was founded in 1975 by Vilayat Inayat Khan and a group of his students. The Abode has a long history as a residential community, a centralized location for the Inayati order, a conference and retreat center, and a center of esoteric study. In 2023, its management was transferred to Friends of South Family. The property is located in the eastern heights of the Taconic Mountains in New Lebanon, New York, and includes historic Shaker buildings built between 1834 and 1870.The described intent of the Abode on its founding was stated: to "collectively embody spiritual awakening," through "mutual commitment to practicing...the Sufi teachings," "shared devotion to the ideals of Love, Harmony and Beauty, and to the specific transformational work whereby these ideals are progressively realized," for "mutual dedication and visionary collaboration."

East Chatham is a hamlet located partly in the town of Chatham and partly in the town of Canaan, in the state of New York, United States. It is located at the crossroads of a railroad, Interstate 90, and the Taconic State Parkway. East Chatham is the site of Vovcha Tropa, a campsite owned by Plast, the Ukrainian Scouting Organization. This camp is attended by several hundred scouts. The Rowe-Lant Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Beebe Hill State Forest is a state forest in the town of Austerlitz, Columbia County, New York, United States. Compromising 1,383 acres (560 ha) in the Taconic Mountains, it adjoins Harvey Mountain State Forest to the southeast. With around 30 mi (48 km) of multiple-use trails, the area is managed for environmental protection, recreation, and timber harvesting. The 6.5-acre (2.6 ha) Barrett Pond is located within the state forest on the west side of Columbia County Route 5, and was home to numerous fish species when last sampled in 1983.The defunct Beebe Hill Fire Tower is located on the summit of Beebe Hill at an elevation of 1,726 ft (526 m). Initially constructed in 1928 on Alander Mountain in Massachusetts, the tower was moved to Washburn Mountain in Columbia County in 1933, and finally to Beebe Hill in 1964. It remained in operation until 1987. In 1997, local residents, the Forest Fire Lookout Association, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation began efforts to restore the fire tower and establish access through a network of hiking trails. Along the main trail near the fire tower, a lean-to shelter is available for public use.

Mount Lebanon Shaker Society, also known as New Lebanon Shaker Society, was a communal settlement of Shakers in New Lebanon, New York. The earliest converts began to "gather in" at that location in 1782 and built their first meetinghouse in 1785. The early Shaker Ministry, including Joseph Meacham and Lucy Wright, the architects of Shakers' gender-balanced government, lived there. Isaac N. Youngs, the society's scribe, chronicled the life of this Shaker village for almost half a century. Youngs also designed the schoolhouse built there in 1839. Holy Mount, where Shaker services were held, has a spur ridge which has been called Mount Lebanon. In addition to the Shakers' central Ministry, notable residents at Mount Lebanon's North Family included Elder Frederick W. Evans, known for his public preaching, and his partner, Eldress Antoinette Doolittle, who was succeeded by Anna White, M. Catherine Allen artists Sarah Bates, and Polly Anne Reed. The North Family was also known for publishing a book of poetry, Mount Lebanon Cedar Boughs: original poems by the North family of Shakers, Anna White, ed. (Buffalo: Peter Paul Company, 1895), with a number of poems by Cecilia Devere and Martha Anderson.
