HandCrafting Justice (HCJ) was an alternative trading organization that at its prime worked with approximately 2,000 women in 18 developing countries. It was started in October 1997 as a project of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd and was dissolved in January 2016. HCJ was a member of the Fair Trade Federation and Co-op America.

River Crest Sanitarium was a New York State licensed mental hospital located in Astoria, Queens. River Crest was founded in 1896 by John J. Kindred (1864-1937), a Virginia native who moved to Queens and was elected to the House of Representatives, serving from 1911 to 1913 and 1921 to 1929.

The Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard station (also known as Ditmars Boulevard station), is the northern terminal station on the BMT Astoria Line of the New York City Subway. Located above 31st Street between 23rd Avenue and Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria, Queens, it is served by the N train at all times and the W train on weekdays. The Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard station opened on February 1, 1917, as part of the initial segment of the BMT Astoria Line. In 2018 and 2019, this station was renovated along with six others on the Astoria Line. This station has two tracks and an island platform. It is partially under the New York Connecting Railroad (NYCR) viaduct, which also carries the tracks of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Most of the platform is north of the viaduct.

Cassinelli Pasta was a pasta company based on 23rd Avenue in Astoria, Queens. The company was founded in Manhattan in 1912 by Peter and Adele Cassinelli, and operated for 101 years before being closed down in 2023. It was also based in New Jersey for a short time, but moved to Astoria permanently in the 1930s, which at the time was heavily Italian-American. A combination shop and pasta factory that made fresh daily pasta, it was named the best fresh pasta in New York City by New York magazine in 2001, and delivered frequently to upscale Manhattan restaurants. The business was run for numerous years by Tony Bonfigli and Nella Costella, who had purchased the business from Adele in 1972. After the death of Costella in 2022, Bonfigli decided to retire, resulting in the shop's permanent closure.

Sal, Kris & Charlie's Deli, also known as The Sandwich King of Astoria, is a deli located on 33-12 23rd Avenue in Astoria, Queens, near the Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard station. Established in 1940, it was run since then by the Gordon family. In 1987, Charlie Gordon became the shop's third owner until his death in 2019 at the age of 60, after which it was inherited by his son, John Gordon. The deli is named after him, his wife, Kris, and the shop's counterman, Sal, with the "Sandwich King" name coming from Charlie's nickname at the time. While the deli used to sell canned goods and small $1 sandwiches, Charlie, a former baker, preferred heavy sandwiches, and specialized the deli as a sandwich restaurant selling 14-inch-long heroes. The restaurant's most well-known sandwich is "The Bomb", a mix of Italian and American cold cuts topped with American and Provolone cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, and mayonnaise and vinegar. It was invented by accident when a customer told Charlie he could make whatever he wanted, and the resulting sandwich caught on with customers. In 2013, an airplane passenger, Jason Michael Cruz, was detained by the TSA after discussing the sandwich with a friend and claiming he "had the wrong kind of bomb", which was mistaken for a terrorist threat. Other foods served by the deli include coffee and house-made pickled peppers that are also used to top their sandwiches.

The Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society is a private benevolent society founded in 1892 in Astoria, Queens to support Czech and Slovak immigrants to the area, as well as people of Czech and Slovak ancestry. The Society is commonly known as "Bohemian Hall", for the historic structure (NRHP) in which it is located.

The Charles Poletti Power Project was a power station located in northeastern Queens, named after politician Charles Poletti. An 885-megawatt oil and natural gas-fired facility originally known as Astoria 6, it started generating electricity in 1977, and was gradually phased out starting in 2002, replaced by a newer, cleaner facility on the same site in 2005, Astoria Energy. The plant was shuttered in 2010 following a lawsuit and years of community opposition. It was one of the dirtiest power plants in the state while it was operating, and pollution from the plant was said to contribute to high rates of asthma in the surrounding neighborhood of Astoria, giving it the nickname "Asthma Alley". In 2021, New York State approved a plan to build a 100-megawatt battery system, the East River Storage System, on the site, in order to store and discharge renewable energy.

The 2006 Queens blackout was a series of power outages that affected the northwest section of the New York City borough Queens in July 2006. The blackout primarily affected the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside, and Woodside. The outages affected 174,000 people, caused business losses of tens of millions of dollars, caused airport and transit delays and cancellations, and caused unsavory living conditions due to a concurrent heat wave.

Astoria Park is a 59.96-acre (24.26 ha) public park in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens in New York City. The park is situated on the eastern shore of the Hell Gate, a strait of the East River, between Ditmars Boulevard to the north and Hoyt Avenue to the south. The Robert F. Kennedy (Triborough) and Hell Gate Bridges respectively pass over the park's southern and northern sections. Astoria Park contains a playground, a soccer field, a running track, a skate park, and courts for tennis, basketball, and bocce. Astoria Park also includes the Astoria Play Center, which consists of a recreation center and a pool. The park and play center are maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks). While Astoria Park was planned in 1905, the land was not acquired until October 1913. Astoria Park was formally named after the surrounding neighborhood in December 1913 and recreational facilities gradually opened within the park over the two following decades. The pool and bathhouse were designed by John Hatton during a Works Progress Administration project in 1935–1936 and was used for the United States Olympic Trials for swimming during 1936, 1952, and 1964. The park was extensively renovated in the 1980s and the late 2010s. The Astoria Play Center was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2007.

The Hell Gate Bridge, originally the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge or the East River Arch Bridge, is a 1,017-foot (310 m) steel through arch railroad bridge in New York City. Originally built for four tracks, the bridge currently carries two tracks of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and one freight track across the Hell Gate, a strait of the East River, between Astoria in Queens and Randalls and Wards Islands in Manhattan. The arch across the Hell Gate is the largest of three bridges that form the Hell Gate railroad viaduct. An inverted bowstring truss bridge with four 300-foot (91.4 m) spans crosses the Little Hell Gate, a former strait that is now filled in, and a 350-foot (106.7 m) fixed truss bridge crosses the Bronx Kill, a strait now narrowed by fill. Together with approaches, the bridges are more than 17,000 feet (3.2 mi; 5.2 km) long. The designs of the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, England and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in New South Wales, Australia were derived from the Hell Gate Bridge.

Columbus is a statue in Astoria, Queens created by Angelo Racioppi with funds from the New York City Works Progress Administration Art Project. It sits in Columbus Square park. Dedicated in 1941, it is in bronze on a cast stone base. It depicts Christopher Columbus as a young, energetic explorer at the helm. The base the statue sits on suggests the prow of a ship.
