During the American Civil War, Arkansas was a Confederate state, though it had initially voted to remain in the Union. Following the capture of Fort Sumter in April 1861, Abraham Lincoln called for troops from every Union state to put down the rebellion, and Arkansas and several other states seceded. For the rest of the civil war, Arkansas played a major role in controlling the Mississippi River, a major waterway. Arkansas raised 48 infantry regiments, 20 artillery batteries, and over 20 cavalry regiments for the Confederacy, mostly serving in the Western Theater, though the Third Arkansas served with distinction in the Army of Northern Virginia. Major-General Patrick Cleburne was the state's most notable military leader. The state also supplied four infantry regiments, four cavalry regiments and one artillery battery of white troops for the Union and six infantry regiments and one artillery battery of "U.S. Colored Troops." Numerous skirmishes as well as several significant battles were fought in Arkansas, including the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern in March 1862, a decisive one for the Trans-Mississippi Theater which ensured Union control of northern Arkansas. The state capitol at Little Rock was captured in 1863. By the end of the war, programs such as the draft, high taxes, and martial law had led to a decline in enthusiasm for the Confederate cause. Arkansas was officially readmitted to the Union in 1868.

McAlmont, also referred to as "Mac Side", is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. The community adjoins eastern North Little Rock, and is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Roundtop Filling Station, in Sherwood, Arkansas, United States, is one of only two structures in Sherwood to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the other being Sylvan Hills Country Club Golf Course.

Sherwood is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 32,731, making it the 13th most populous city in Arkansas. It is part of the Little Rock−North Little Rock−Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area with 699,757 people according to the 2010 census.

The Greens at North Hills Municipal Golf Course is a municipal golf course located in Sherwood, Arkansas, United States. Construction of the 120 acres (49 ha) golf course began in 1927 during the "golden era" of golf course design. Originally named the Sylvan Hills Country Club Golf Course and developed by the Justin Matthews Co., the course was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 due to its local significance and association with entertainment and recreation, From 1956 through May 2007, the golf course was named the North Hills Country Club.

The Waterside Street Bridge is a historic bridge, carrying Waterside Street across an inlet of Lake Number 1 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a rustic closed-spandrel masonry structure, with an exterior of rough uncoursed fieldstone that rises to parapet above the side of the roadbed. It is one of four masonry bridges built between 1929 and 1939 by developer Justin Matthews as part of the Lakewood subdivision.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

T. R. Pugh Memorial Park (or The Old Mill) is a re-creation of an 1880s era water-powered grist mill located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was used in the opening scenes of the movie classic Gone With The Wind. In 2010, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park was built in 1933 by Justin Matthews and named in honor of Thomas R. Pugh, of Portland, Arkansas, who was a close friend and benefactor of Matthews. The architect for the park and the mill was Frank Carmean with artist Dionicio Rodriguez serving as sculptor of the concrete work to simulate wooden, iron, and steel structures.In the present day, the Old Mill serves as the backdrop for weddings and portrait photography.In 2008, the roof was set on fire, but no permanent damage resulted.

The Edgemere Street Bridge is a historic bridge in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It carries Edgemere Street over a small part of Lakewood Lake Number Three. It is a masonry structure with closed spandrels, and has a span of about 18 feet (5.5 m) and a total length of 57 feet (17 m). It is built out of rustic, roughly squared fieldstone, that is laid in uncoursed fashion. Vertical columns project from either side of the spandrels, rising above the deck level to form a decorative parapet. It was built, along with the similar Lakeshore Drive Bridge as part of the innovative Lakewood Development project of developer Justin Matthews in the 1930s.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Dr. Charles H. Kennedy House is a historic house at 6 Edenwood Lane in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a single story steel frame structure, organized as three hexagonal pods joined by linear sections. The pods divide the house's functional spaces: one is for public living spaces and amenities, including the kitchen, living room, and dining area, one has the master bedroom suite, and one has a guest space and playroom. The exterior is clad in a combination of brick veneer and vertical board siding, and the roof is flat except for the pods, which have pyramidal roofs. The house was built in 1964 to a design by noted Arkansas architect Warren Segraves.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

The Carl Bailey Company Building is a historic commercial building at 3100 East Broadway in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Built about 1945, it is an International style structure modeled on the International Harvester "Servicenter" design of noted industrial designer Raymond Loewy, one of his few known building designs. It has a low front section, originally housing offices and showrooms, and a taller rear section that was used as a service area. A prominent brick pylon rises from the front of the building, which was originally adorned with the company name and International Harvester logo. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
