West-Barendrecht

Barendrecht (Dutch: [ˈbaːrənˌdrɛxt] (listen)) is a town and municipality in the west of the Netherlands, near Rotterdam, South Holland. The municipality had a population of 48,673 in 2019, and covers an area of 21.73 km2 (8.39 sq mi) of which 1.98 km2 (0.76 sq mi) is water. The municipality of Barendrecht also includes Barendrecht-Carnisselande and Smitshoek.

IJsselmonde is a river island in the Netherlands, between the Nieuwe Maas, Noord and Oude Maas branches rivers of the Rhine-Meuse delta in the province of South Holland. The city of Rotterdam now occupies most of the northern part of the island and includes the eponymous former village of IJsselmonde, once a separate community. The island was once a rich agricultural region, but is mostly suburbs today. Only the mid-south parts of the island have retained their agricultural character.

The Barendrecht train accident involved the collision between two freight trains on 24 September 2009 near Barendrecht, Netherlands. One of the drivers was killed, the other was seriously injured.

Baroeg is a music venue in Rotterdam. Baroeg self-describes itself as a 'subcultural pop venue' and hosts alternative modern music events and concerts. The club has been located in the Rotterdam neighbourhood Lombardijen, in the Spinozapark on the Spinozaweg (the club takes its name from the given name of Baruch Spinoza, as pronounced in Dutch). Inside Baroeg there are a bar and a concert hall with podium where bands perform metal, punk, hardcore and other styles. Baroeg also hosts dance nights. A well-known dance event is the monthly Downward Spiral (electronic body music, gothic rock and more). Other dance nights vary from cybergothic to wave to drum and bass. In the past bands such as Tröckener Kecks, Claw Boys Claw, Cradle of Filth and Within Temptation (in 1998) performed at Baroeg though with a capacity of 400 visitors it is not feasible to host such famous bands anymore. Since the 25 year anniversary Baroeg twice-annually organized the Baroeg Open Air festival outside the Baroeg in the park. Since 2011 Baroeg Open Air is held annually in the Zuiderpark, near to Ahoy. In 2007 Baroeg was temporarily closed down after Michal Karlowicz, a 24-year-old Polish man, died after being hit with a bar stool. Two suspects were soon apprehended and were later convicted to jail terms of five and six years. Mayor Ivo Opstelten closed Baroeg for three months despite protest in the city council by the Socialist Party and Livable Rotterdam The protests fell on deaf ears and Baroeg was closed for the three-month duration.

Rotterdam Lombardijen is a railway station in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, located on the Breda–Rotterdam railway between Rotterdam and Dordrecht. The railway station is located in the borough of IJsselmonde. The station opened on 1 June 1964 with wooden platforms and no more than a trailer for ticket sales. On 12 September 1968 a station building was opened; the current station building dates from 1996. Train services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

The municipality existed between 1817 and 1837, when it merged with West-Barendrecht to form the new municipality "Oost- en West-Barendrecht", now just called "Barendrecht".
