Esche, Lower Saxony

The Dinkel is a river in Germany and the Netherlands, left tributary of the Vecht. Its total length is 89 km (55 mi), of which 47 km (29 mi) in Germany. The Dinkel originates in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, between Ahaus and Coesfeld. It flows north to Gronau, crosses the border with the Netherlands (Overijssel), flows through Losser, Denekamp, and recrosses the border to Germany (Lower Saxony). The Dinkel joins the Vechte in Neuenhaus. Jacob van Ruisdael depicted the landscape of the Dinkel and its watermills near Denekamp in his work Two Watermills and an Open Sluice near Singraven. These watermills still exist. In the Netherlands the river gave name to the village of Overdinkel and to the municipality of Dinkelland. Near Denekamp some of the waters of the Dinkel are used to regulate the levels of the Almelo-Nordhorn canal.

Neuenhaus is a town in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony, and is the seat of a like-named collective municipality Neuenhaus. Neuenhaus lies on the rivers Dinkel and Vechte near the border with the Netherlands and is roughly 10 km northwest of Nordhorn, and 30 km north of Enschede.

Lage is a community on the river Dinkel in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony with roughly 1,000 inhabitants. It belongs to the Joint Community (Samtgemeinde) of Neuenhaus. Of particular sightseeing interest are the church, built in 1687, the watermill, built in 1270, the castle ruins (first mentioned in a document in 1183, destroyed in 1324–1326 and 1626), the lordly manor, built in 1686 and the historic Oak Avenue with the manor staff’s old houses. The extended name Herrlichkeit Lage – “Herrlichkeit” means grandness or magnificence – refers to the time between the end of the Thirty Years' War and the year 1803, in which Lage was a self-standing small state with its own jurisdiction. The biggest club is the sport club, Rot-Weiß Lage 29 e. V. (about 700 members).

Osterwald is a community and part of the Joint Community (Samtgemeinde) of Neuenhaus in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony. The community consists of the centres of Osterwald, Alte Piccardie and Hohenkörben (Veldhausen parish). Breklenkamp is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is a part of the municipality of Dinkelland, and lies about 16 km north of Oldenzaal. It was first mentioned in the late-10th century as Brakkinghem, and means "settlement of Brakko (person)". In 1840, it was home to 257 people.Huis te Brecklenkamp is a havezate which was built in the 1630s. The current layout dates from 1844. In 1990, it became a youth hostel, but has become private property in 1990.

Halle is a village in the Joint Community (Samtgemeinde) of Uelsen, in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony. The community, to which the centres of Hardingen (amalgamated in 1974) and Hesingen also belong, has 654 inhabitants (as of June 2005) and spans 21.15 km². The community’s mayor is Geert Beckhuis. The Poascheberg in Hesingen is, with an elevation of 89 m above sea level, the highest point in the lower part of the old County of Bentheim. Unlike the people of the better known and bigger city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt, who call themselves Hallenser in German, the inhabitants here call themselves simply Haller, following the usual German rule for formulating nouns denoting a particular place’s inhabitants. Further centres are Belthoek, Bovenhoek, Dalenhoek, Erstenhoek and Kleihoek.
