Midden-Drenthe

Beilen is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 16 km south of Assen. The old Reformed church is the only remaining truly old building; a large fire destroyed a major part of Beilen in 1820. Beilen has a railway station - Beilen railway station. The biggest employers in Beilen are the former DOMO milk powder factory and the psychiatric hospital GGZ Drenthe. The village is also home to a large distribution centre for the Jumbo supermarket chain. Beilen is also visited by many tourists, as it is located between many forests and National Reserves. Each August the so-called "Wende-aovends" take place in Beilen, featuring activities for children in the shopping center and showcases by local artists at night. Until 1998, Beilen was a separate municipality.

Beilen is a railway station located in Beilen, Netherlands. The station was opened on 1 May 1870, closed on 15 May 1938 and reopened on 1 June 1940. The station is located on the Meppel–Groningen railway. The services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

The Molen van Makkum is a smock mill at Makkum, Drenthe, the Netherlands which has been restored to working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 8889.

Brunsting is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 16 km south of Assen. The statistical area "Brunsting", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 100.

Hijken is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 13 km south of Assen, the province capital of Drenthe.

Holthe is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 14 km north of Hoogeveen. The statistical area "Holthe", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 150.

On 22 May 2020, a Sprinter service by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) running from Zwolle to Groningen, collided with a tractor trying to cross the tracks at a passive railway crossing near Hooghalen on the Meppel–Groningen railway. The train driver was killed instantly, while three people were injured. The driver of the tractor escaped without injuries. According to a subsequent investigation by ProRail, the two drivers did not see each other until a few seconds before the collision. Lack of visibility in poor weather was the main cause of the accident. The crossing where the accident occurred was closed permanently shortly after. The accident led to the fronts of the new Sprinter New Generation trains of NS being re-painted from dark blue to a brighter yellow to increase the visibility of the trains. Additional safety measures were taken at 28 passive railway crossings. The driver of the tractor was put on trial with community service being demanded, but the court did not find him negligent.

On 2 December 1975, seven South Moluccans seized a train with about 50 passengers on board in open countryside near the village of Wijster, halfway between Hoogeveen and Beilen in the northern part of the Netherlands. The hijacking lasted for 12 days and three hostages were killed. At the same time, seven other South-Moluccans took hostages in the Indonesian Consulate in Amsterdam. The attackers came from Bovensmilde, a village where a few years later another group of South Moluccans seized a primary school. The attackers hid their weapons disguised as presents for the Sinterklaas holiday on 5 December.

Hooghalen is a village in the municipality Midden-Drenthe, in the Dutch province Drenthe. In Drenthe it is also called Hoal'n or Hoalen , but then people often mean the entire area, with the neighborhoods Laaghalen, Laaghalerveen and Oosthalen. It is located on the flank of sandy soils, above a salt dome. The main attraction of Hooghalen is the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork. Here the history is told of Westerbork Camp and the Jewish persecution in general. The former camp is located on the edge of the southern village Westerbork.

Spier is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, about 11 km north of Hoogeveen. In 2001, the hamlet of Spier had 91 inhabitants. The built-up area of the hamlet was 0.036 km2, and contained 35 residences. The statistical area "Spier", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 370.
