Oldland Common railway station

Oldland Common is a village in the far south region of South Gloucestershire, England, on the outskirts of Bristol. It is in the civil parish of Bitton, approximately 8 miles between the centres of cities Bristol and Bath. Oldland Common is the birthplace of the famous astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell, and is home to the Sir Bernard Lovell secondary school, a designated language college opened by Lovell himself in 1972, once attended by England cricketer Marcus Trescothick and Millwall FC manager, and former Bristol Rovers FC player, Ian Holloway. Other schools in the village are St. Anne's Church of England Primary School (built in 1837 & initially called Oldland National School) and Redfield Edge Primary School. The village lies on the Avon Valley Railway, a three-mile long heritage railway, where it is served by Oldland Common railway station. It is part of the civil parish of Bitton which has a population of approx. 9,000 (according to the 2011 Census). The village is adjacent to the villages of Bitton and Bridgeyate. Oldland Common was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. As was common in the surrounding area, the village was involved in the coal mining industry and had its own pit on Cowhorn Hill during the 1800s. The largest employment in the late C18 and early C19 was felt hat-making - half the working population at the time of the 1841 census. The largest place of worship in the village is St Anne's Church of England church. Its grounds contain a separate social area, the Orchard Rooms. Other local churches include the Oldland Methodist Church (shown in photograph above) and the small United Reformed Church. The village is home to the 54th Kingswood (St Anne's) Scout Group. On 30 October 2012, mobile phone operator EE launched their 4G signal for superfast internet in Bristol, meaning the village of Oldland Common is now connected to 4G. The 4G signal mast is situated at Redfield Hill in the village. 4G from Three, Vodafone and O2 is also now available in Oldland Common.

Oldland Abbotonians Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Oldland Common South Gloucestershire, England. They are currently members of the Western League Division One and play at the Aitchison Playing Fields. The club is affiliated to the Somerset County FA and Gloucestershire County FA.

Sir Bernard Lovell Academy is a comprehensive school in North Street, Oldland Common, South Gloucestershire, England. The school is named after the astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell, who was born on the current site in 1913.It has been on the same site since the 1960s, when it was a girls school, later the main school was added and now takes boys and girls from 11 to 18 years old. The girls school still exists as a school canteen and small classrooms, as well as housing the year 10 and 11 common room (Galileo Building). Previously a foundation school administered by South Gloucestershire Council, Sir Bernard Lovell School converted to academy status on 1 April 2015 and is now sponsored by the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust. However the school continues to co-ordinate with South Gloucestershire Council for admissions. Notable former pupils at the school include Marcus Trescothick, who helped the England cricket team regain The Ashes title against their fierce Australian rivals in 2005, Craig Figes who captained the Team GB Waterpolo Team at London 2012 and Ian Holloway, a former manager of Queens Park Rangers F.C.

North Common is a village just outside Warmley, Bristol, in South Gloucestershire, England. Historically this was a rural hamlet surrounded by farmland. The residents are fortunate enough that to the east of the village is attractive rolling countryside, with views of Lansdown, and the surrounding hills. The village is on the eastern outskirts of Bristol and approximately halfway between Bristol city centre and the neighbouring city of Bath. North Common is a semi rural village, adjacent to the villages of Warmley, Oldland Common and Bridgeyate. To the east of the village is open farmland and greenbelt which is only a few minutes walk. The village is home to the Bath Ales brewery.The Bristol and Bath Railway Path passes through North Common and steam trains from the Avon Valley Steam Railway travel as far as North Common where the rail track terminates. Many local children attend St Barnabas CE Primary School, Redfield Edge Primary School, The Meadows Primary School in Bitton or St Anne's CE VC Primary school in nearby Oldland Common. Older students attend Sir Bernard Lovell Academy or other local secondary schools such as Digitech or Wellsway School in Keynsham. North Common has its own village hall located in Millers Drive and is served by several pubs in particular The Griffin and White Harte pubs at Bridgeyate, the Doplhin at Oldland Common and the Hollybush Inn on the North Common - Bridgeyate border. There is suitable public transport with the 42 to Bristol city centre, the 19A to Bath city centre or Cribbs Causeway, or around 10 minutes walk away outside the griffin there's the 35 from Marshfield to Bristol city centre. There are good road links to the Avon Ring Road (and hence the motorway network) via nearby Warmley village and Bath lies some 7 miles (11 km) east and is easily accessible by road. Bristol is 7.6 miles (12.2 km) west, also very accessible.

Bridgeyate is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire, England. Bridgeyate is situated between the cities of Bristol and Bath. The increase in housebuilding in the area has seen Bridgeyate become attached to the nearby villages of Warmley and North Common, but it still retains its own identity with a large common and three public houses, The Griffin, The White Hart and The Hollybush. The Hollybush reopened in March 2014 after an extensive refit. Residents of Bridgeyate are fortunate that it looks across magnificent open countryside to the East, with walks over ridges and the Avon Valley towards the villages of Beach and Upton Cheyney and beyond to Lansdown and Bath. Bridgeyate is very well sited strategically, with rapid access to the cities of Bristol and Bath and to the M4 motorway by road, although public transport provision is poor with no local railway station and sporadic bus services. For cyclists and walkers, the renowned Bristol-Bath railway path runs straight past Bridgeyate. Also there seems to be bit of confusion as to how it is spelt, some road signs and maps say Bridgeyate and some say Bridge Yate. The notable individuals that have lived in the Bridgeyate area are as follows: Eddie Shirk - a graduate of Cardiff University who pioneered mental health screening techniques in the Education industry and is known for his philanthropy. Alford Stanley - veteran aerospace engineer King Edmund I - often held residency in the surrounding area and was eventually assassinated in Pucklechurch

Bitton railway station is the main station (and headquarters) of the Avon Valley Railway. It is located near the village of Bitton, South Gloucestershire. The station was opened on 4 August 1869, however was shut due to the Beeching cuts, closing to freight trains on 5 July 1965, and to passengers on 7 March 1966. However, it was reopened by the Avon Valley Railway heritage railway in 1972. The station was served by the Midland Railway-operated Mangotsfield and Bath branch line, which now has become the Bristol and Bath Railway Path cycle route.

Bitton Association Football Club is a football club based in the South Gloucestershire suburb of Bitton, in England. Affiliated to the Gloucestershire County Football Association, they play at the Recreation Ground on Bath Road.

Oldland is a village and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, England. The parish includes the villages of Cadbury Heath and Longwell Green, and part of Willsbridge. It does not include Oldland Common, which is in the parish of Bitton.

Digitech Studio School is the first studio school in the wider Bristol area. It opened in 2015 and moved to a new building in Warmley, Gloucestershire in 2016. It is part of the Cabot Learning Federation.It takes students from 14 to 19 years old.In 2021 Ofsted rated the school as "Good".

Warmley was a small railway station just south of Mangotsfield on the Midland Railway Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line. The station was sited just north of a level crossing on the A420 road through the village. It had wooden buildings: the shelter on the down platform (towards Bath) survives and is used on occasion as a refreshment stop on the Bristol & Bath Railway Path, which follows the route of the railway.
