Pekela

Oude Pekela (Gronings: Olle Pekel; Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʌudə ˈpeːkəlaː]) is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Pekela, about 5 km southwest of Winschoten. It was established to exploit the peat in the area. During the 19th century, it was known for its maritime transport. During the 20th century, Oude Pekela became the centre of the cardboard and potato starch industry.

Nieuwe Pekela (Gronings: Nij Pekel) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Pekela, about 7 km southeast of Veendam. The village started as a peat colony, and was named after the river Pekel A. During the 19th century, the village was active in the maritime trade, and contains a museum dedicated to the maritime history. In December 1969, the first women strike of the Netherlands occurred in Nieuwe Pekela.

Westerlee is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Oldambt, about 3 km west of the city of Winschoten. Westerlee was a separate municipality until 1821, when it was merged with Scheemda.

Alteveer (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɑltəveːr]) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is largely located in the municipality Stadskanaal, about 7 km northeast of the centre of Stadskanaal. The houses on the western edge of the village are part of the municipality of Pekela. The name literally means "all too far".

Winschoten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʋɪnsxoːtən] ; abbreviation: Ws) is an unstaffed railway station in Winschoten in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Scheemda and Bad Nieuweschans in the province of Groningen. The station building, designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode, was completed in 1865 and expanded in 1904. Train services started on 1 May 1868 and have since been provided by Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (1868–1937), Nederlandse Spoorwegen (1938–2000), NoordNed (2000–2005), and Arriva (2005–present). During World War II, 500 Jews were transported from the station via the Westerbork transit camp to Nazi concentration camps, where most of them were killed. The station has three tracks and two platforms. As of 2014, there are two local train services with trains every half an hour to and from Groningen, and trains every hour to and from Bad Nieuweschans and Leer (Germany). The station handles 2,500 rail passengers on an average weekday. There is a park and ride area for cars and bicycles, and a bus station with nine regional services provided by Qbuzz.

Heiligerlee (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɛilɪɣərˌleː]; abbreviation: Hle) was a railway stop (Dutch: stopplaats) in the village of Heiligerlee in the Netherlands. It was located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between the railway stations of Scheemda and Winschoten in the province of Groningen. Trains operated by Staatsspoorwegen called at Heiligerlee from 1908 until the railway stop was closed in 1934.

Winschoten (Dutch: [ˈʋɪnsxoːtə(n)] ; Gronings: Winschoot) is a city with a population of 18,518 in the municipality of Oldambt in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is the largest city in the region of Oldambt in the province of Groningen which has 38,213 inhabitants. Winschoten received its city rights in 1825. It was a separate municipality until it was merged into Oldambt in 2010. The seat of government of Oldambt is in Winschoten. There are three windmills and several churches in Winschoten. There is a railway station with direct connections to Groningen and Leer (Germany), although due to the reconstruction of the Friesenbrücke trains to Germany will stop at Weener until 2024. Winschoten has an important role as a shopping centre for the region of Oldambt. In the province of Groningen, it is the second-largest shopping destination and it attracts many consumers from nearby Germany.

Wedderveer (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌʋɛdərˈveːr]) is a hamlet near Wedde in the municipality of Westerwolde in the Netherlands. It has a population of around 135 and a total area of 47 ha (120 acres).The sawmill Spinnenkop has been listed as a national heritage site since 1990.

Scheemda (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈsxeːmdaː] ; abbreviation: Sda) is an unstaffed railway station in Scheemda in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Zuidbroek and Winschoten in the province of Groningen. The station building was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode and completed in 1865. The train services started on 1 May 1868. Trains have been operated by Staatsspoorwegen (1868–1937), Nederlandse Spoorwegen (1938–2000), NoordNed (2000–2005), and Arriva (2005–present). There are two tracks and an island platform at the station. Two local train services with trains in both directions call at Scheemda twice per hour. There are also connections to four regional bus services provided by Qbuzz.
