Le Vieux-Longueuil

Longueuil (French pronunciation: [lɔ̃ɡœj] ) is a city in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is the seat of the Montérégie administrative region and the central city of the urban agglomeration of Longueuil. It sits on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River directly across from Montreal. The population as of the Canada 2016 Census totalled 239,700, making it Montreal's second largest suburb, the fifth most populous city in Quebec and twentieth largest in Canada. Charles Le Moyne founded Longueuil as a seigneurie in 1657. It would become a parish in 1845, a village in 1848, a town in 1874 and a city in 1920. Between 1961 and 2002, Longueuil's borders grew three times, as it was amalgamated with surrounding municipalities; there was a strong de-amalgamation in 2006 (see 2000–2006 municipal reorganization in Quebec). Longueuil is a residential, commercial and industrial city. It incorporates some urban features, but is essentially a suburb. Longueuil can be classified as a commuter town as a large portion of its residents commute to work in Montreal. Most buildings are single-family homes constructed in the post-war period. The city consists of three boroughs: Le Vieux-Longueuil, Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park. Longueuil is the seat of the judicial district of Longueuil. Residents of the city are called Longueuillois.

The urban agglomeration of Longueuil was created on January 1, 2006 as a result of the de-amalgamation process brought upon by the Charest government. It encompasses all the boroughs that were merged into the previous city of Longueuil and still retains the same area as that mega-city. The urban agglomeration of Longueuil is coextensive with the territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Longueuil, whose geographical code is 58. In 2012, Longueuil mayor Caroline St-Hilaire proposed that the Urban agglomeration of Longueuil leave the Montérégie and become its own administrative region.

Old Longueuil (French: Vieux-Longueuil) is a historic neighbourhood located in the borough of the same name, in the city of Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. There is not a universal definition of what exactly constitute the Old Longueuil neighbourhood, but it always includes at least the territory corresponding to the pre-1961 city of Longueuil.Old Longueuil was named a heritage district by the city in 1993, and features 450 buildings built before 1945. Many historic buildings are found in this district, such as the Co-Cathedral of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, the ruins of Fort Longueuil, and Saint Mark's Anglican Church. Rue Saint-Charles, one block inland from the Saint Lawrence River, is the main street in this neighbourhood and features many small businesses, among them restaurants, bars, and corner stores. The borough hall of Le Vieux-Longueuil borough is also in the neighbourhood.

Montreal-South (French: Montréal-Sud) was a suburb of Montreal located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River founded in 1906. Montréal-Sud was created from land of the Saint-Antoine-de-Longueuil parish. Originally a village in its first five years, Montréal-Sud gained the status of city in 1911. Early in its existence, its population was split between French-speaking Roman Catholics and English-speaking Protestants. This changed by the middle of the century, as the Francophones became the overwhelming majority.The approximate territorial limits of the city were La Fayette Boulevard in the west, Bertrand Street in the south, Joliette Street in the east and St. Lawrence River in the north.Like neighbouring Longueuil, Montréal-Sud was an enclave of the parish Saint-Antoine-de-Longueuil (later known as Ville Jacques-Cartier).

Longueuil station, officially Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke station, is a Montreal Metro station in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and is the southern terminus of the Yellow Line. It is connected to a campus of Université de Sherbrooke, as well as the largest bus station in Greater Montreal, Terminus Longueuil. It is one of the busiest stations on the Metro network, with 40% of public transit users from the South Shore using the Yellow Line in the morning peak.

The bus terminus has 41 numbered platforms in 7 lettered sections, mostly used by Greater Montreal transit agencies with some intercity coach services.

Fort Longueuil was a stone fort that stood in Longueuil, in Quebec, Canada from 1690 to 1810. Fort Longueuil was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada on May 25, 1923. The historic site includes the archaeological site of the fort, which was demolished in 1810. The site extends beneath the present-day Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue Cathedral. It is one of the only buildings in Canada that could ever be considered a castle (fortified residence for a noble), and out of those buildings it most resembles the castles of Europe. This makes it unique in the country.

The Co-Cathedral of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue (French: Co-cathédrale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue) is a co-cathedral in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, on Montreal's south shore. It is located on the corner of Rue Saint-Charles and Chemin Chambly in the Borough of Le Vieux-Longueuil. It is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. The cathedral houses the remains of the Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher, the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Its episcopal region is Longueuil-Nord. Lionel Gendron, the bishop, has a cathedra sculpted in walnut. Before the reign of Bernard Hubert, it was simply a parish church. The cathedral was classified as historical monument by the Government of Quebec in 1984.

Its cathedral episcopal see is the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste dedicated to John the Evangelist, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. It has a Co-Cathedral: Cocathédrale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, in Longueuil, Québec, and a Minor basilica: Basilique Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes, in Varennes, Québec.

The Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes College is a high school level education facility located in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. It is a school which is part of the International Baccalaureate. The students attending the college normally refer to it as NDL, Collège Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes being a long name.
