Marlborough, Massachusetts

The Marlborough Center Historic District is a historic district encompassing the civic and commercial heart of Marlborough, Massachusetts. It is centered on a stretch of Main Street between Lincoln Street in the west and Bolton Street (Massachusetts Route 85) in the east, and includes properties on adjacent streets. The center is reflective of the city's prosperity as an industrial center from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Marlborough City Hall is the seat of city government of Marlborough, Massachusetts. It includes the offices of the mayor of Marlborough and the Marlborough City Council. The current city hall building was built in 1905 by architects Allen, Collens and Berry and is an example of Beaux-Arts architecture. It replaced an earlier building that burned down in 1902. The building is part of the Marlborough Center Historic District.

The Temple Building is a historic commercial and residential building at 149 Main Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The four story red brick building was built in 1879–80, and originally housed shops on the ground floor and a hotel on the upper floors. It still has shop space on the ground floor, but the upper levels have been converted to apartments. The building has Second Empire styling, with a mansard roof that is punctured at the center of the main facade by a two-bay arched projecting with decorative brickwork.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Warren Block is a historic commercial block at 155 Main Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The four-story brick building was built in 1891 for Winslow Warren, owner of the local railway express. The building was designed to house office spaces on most of the first and second floors, and facilities of the local YMCA, including a gymnasium and reading room. The building's facade features a distinctive basket-weave style of brickwork.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and included in the Marlborough Center Historic District in 1998.

The West Main Street Historic District of Marlborough, Massachusetts encompasses a residential area west of the city center. It extends along West Main Street from Mechanic Street to Gibbon Street, along Pleasant Street from West Main to Lincoln Street, and also includes short pieces of Witherbee and Winthrop Streets abutting West Main. Most of the buildings in the district are houses built between 1820 and 1930, the period of the city's growth as an industrial center. The 15-acre (6.1 ha) district includes 77 properties, all but two of which contribute to its historic significance. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

The John Brown Bell, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, is a distinguished American Civil War-era bell that has been called the "second-most important bell in American history", after the Liberty Bell.

Brigham Cemetery is a historic cemetery off West Main Street near Crescent Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The small cemetery's first burial was in 1793, and is significant as the city's burial ground for early victims of smallpox. Its burials also include veterans of the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Its last burial was in 1934.

Spring Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery at High and Brown Streets in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Established in 1675, it is the city's oldest cemetery. It has about 650 known burials, dating from its establishment to 1977. It is located on a 2.62-acre (1.06 ha) parcel on a hill just east of the downtown area, and is accessed via a single entrance marked by granite posts at High and Brown Streets. Burials are laid out generally in rows, with headstones facing west. There are four earth-covered tombs near the entrance dating to the first half of the 19th century. Another prominent burial is that of Marlborough's first minister, William Brimsmead (d. 1701).The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Dennison Manufacturing Co. Paper Box Factory is a historic factory building at 175 Maple Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It was built in 1923 and owned by the paper company until 1969. After Dennison left, a subsidiary of Dennison, Design Pak, was based in the building. In 2007, the building was converted into apartments. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.Dennison, founded by brothers Aaron and Eliphalet W. Dennison as an adjunct to their father's jewelry business, was originally a jewelry-box making company run out of the family home in Brunswick, Maine, in the 1840s.

The Pleasant Street Historic District is a predominantly residential historic district at 187—235 Pleasant Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. It is a cohesive collection of 8 residences and one school building that are representative of upper class housing on large well-proportioned lots. The oldest house in the district was built c. 1865, the newest c. 1924. A number of 19th century houses were restyled during the 1920s. The Immaculate Conception School was built in 1961, and does not contribute to the area's historic significance. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.The Pleasant Street area was developed as an upper-class residential area for leaders in Marlborough's dominant shoe manufacturing industry. Members of the Howe and Frye families contributed several of the houses. Louis Howe, who began manufacturing shoes in 1850, built a substantial Second Empire house at 207 Pleasant c. 1865, which was updated to the Colonial Revival by his nephew in the 1920s. Louis Howe's cousin Franklin built 207 Pleasant c. 1872; it was a companion Second Empire house, which was given Georgian Revival styling in 1927 by John Frye, who grew up next door.Three other houses were built in the 19th century, all with Queen Anne styling. The Russell House at 208 Pleasant was built c. 1885, and has a wraparound porch and bargeboard decoration in its gables. This house, like several of the others in the district, has been converted to multi-unit housing. The Walter Frye House at 187 Pleasant was built c. 1895, and has characteristic Queen Anne features, with numerous projections and gables, as well as a wraparound porch with octagonal pavilion and porte cochere. The Frye-Hazelton House at 223 Pleasant was also built c. 1895, and features a prominent octagonal tower.

Maplewood Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Pleasant Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Established in 1864, the 15-acre (6.1 ha) cemetery is the city's eighth. It is laid out in a roughly rectilinear manner, departing from the popular rural cemetery movement, which preferred more picturesque but less space-efficient winding paths and roads. It is the location of a Civil War memorial, placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution.The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
