Cunningham Falls State Park

Camp Greentop is located in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont, Maryland. The camp was built by the Works Progress Administration labor program in the development of what was then known as the Catoctin Mountain Recreational Demonstration Area, and comprises 22 rustic log buildings including sleeping cabins, administrative buildings and lodges. All were built between 1934 and 1938. The buildings are a simplified version of the National Park Service Rustic style. The camp was originally to duplicate the design of Camp Misty Mount, but was modified during construction for use by the Baltimore League for Crippled Children, making it one of the first handicap-accessible facilities in the United States. "From 1957 through 1996, every student in Frederick County enjoyed the opportunity to make a national park their school". Students stayed in the cabins while taking advantage of this outdoor school as part of Frederick County's Outdoor School program. The camp was designed to accommodate 150 people, organized into units of 30. As a matter of policy, a swimming pool was provided, as no natural alternative existed. The cabins with siding exteriors used "waney board" siding, with boards cut from untrimmed logs, resulting in irregular, wavy or "waney" edges. The design modifications at Greentop to accommodate handicapped children reduced capacity to 98. Greentop is also known as Camp 2: Camp 1 is Camp Misty Mount and Camp 3, originally called Camp Hi-Catoctin and located at a much higher elevation, became Camp David. Camp Greentop Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Catoctin Mountain, along with the geologically associated Bull Run Mountains, forms the easternmost mountain ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are in turn a part of the Appalachian Mountains range. The ridge runs northeast–southwest for about 50 miles (80 km) departing from South Mountain near Emmitsburg, Maryland, and running south past Leesburg, Virginia, where it disappears into the Piedmont in a series of low-lying hills near New Baltimore, Virginia. The ridge forms the eastern rampart of the Loudoun and Middletown valleys.

Camp David is a 125-acre (51-hectare) country retreat for the president of the United States. It lies in the wooded hills of Catoctin Mountain Park, in Frederick County, Maryland, near the towns of Thurmont and Emmitsburg, about 62 miles (100 kilometers) north-northwest of the national capital city, Washington, D.C. It is code-named Naval Support Facility Thurmont. Technically a military installation, it is staffed primarily by the Seabees, the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), the United States Navy, and the United States Marine Corps. Naval construction battalions are tasked with Camp David construction and send detachments as needed. Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was built as a retreat for federal government agents and their families by the Works Progress Administration. Construction started in 1935 and was completed in 1938. In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt converted it to a presidential retreat and renamed it "Shangri-La", after the fictional Himalayan paradise. Camp David received its present name in 1953 from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, in honor of his father and his grandson, both named David. The Catoctin Mountain Park does not indicate the location of Camp David on park maps due to privacy and security concerns, although it can be seen through the use of publicly accessible satellite images, and is also viewable on certain public web mapping services like Google Maps.

Catoctin Mountain Park is a park located in part of the Monocacy Valley and Catoctin Mountain ridge−range that forms the northeastern rampart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the Appalachian Mountains System. The park is approximately 5120 acres or 8 square miles (21 km2) in area. Catoctin Mountain Park is managed by the National Park Service, and lies north of and directly adjacent to the similarly sized Cunningham Falls State Park.

Camp Misty Mount is located in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont, Maryland. Misty Mount is also known as Camp 1: Camp 2 is Camp Greentop and Camp 3, originally called Camp Hi-Catoctin and located at a much higher elevation, became Camp David. Camp Misty Mount Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Foxville is an unincorporated community in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. Foxville is located on Maryland Route 77, 4.7 miles (7.6 km) west of Thurmont. Settled in the late 18th century, the historic village is situated between South Mountain to the west and Catoctin Mountain to the east. Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls State Park, and the Appalachian Trail are all within a few miles of Foxville.

Trout Run is a property in the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont, Maryland, that was visited on several occasions by Presidents Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower. Originally called Catoctin Lodge, it is located about 4 mi (6.4 km) away from the presidential retreat at Camp David and was established by one of Hoover's senior aides. It subsequently became the property of the family of a senior State Department official, who owned it for nearly 70 years, before it was acquired in 2013 by an arm of the Church of Scientology. It became the focus of controversy in 2015 when the controversial Narconon drug rehabilitation program, an offshoot of Scientology, sought to turn it into a facility for treating drug addicts despite considerable local opposition.

Camp Airy is a Jewish sleep away summer camp located in Thurmont, Maryland at the edge of the Catoctin Mountain Park. Boys between the ages of 7 and 17 attend for one to seven weeks, depending on their age and interest. Airy is a fully accredited member of the American Camp Association. Camp Airy is the brother camp to Camp Louise.

The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is a 100-acre (40 ha) zoo and wildlife preserve (25 acres (10 ha) are accessible to the public) located on Maryland Route 806 in Thurmont, Maryland, United States. The preserve features safari truck rides that let visitors touch and feed large herbivores in a wooded setting.

Garfield is an unincorporated community in Frederick County, Maryland, United States, situated within the District 6, Catoctin. It has an elevation of 1,453 feet (443 m). Garfield appears on the Myersville U.S. Geological Survey Map and is located in the Eastern Time Zone.

Catoctin Quaker Camp (CQC) is a Quaker residential-wilderness summer camp located near Frederick, Maryland, operated by Baltimore Yearly Meeting. It welcomes both Quaker and non-Quaker children between the ages of 9 and 14, organizing them into "units" based on their age. These units consist of groups of campers who share cabins and participate in trips together. During their two to four weeks at camp, children are immersed in the teachings of Quaker values such as simplicity, equality, and peace. They also experience the benefits of living within an intentional, child-centered, and loving community. Each session at Catoctin Quaker Camp consists of eight days spent in-camp, complemented by two three-day trips. These trips offer exciting outdoor experiences such as canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, tubing, and various other activities. Additionally, the oldest campers embark on a special ten-day trip known as "The Ten Day," which takes them on a journey through the mountains of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Within the campgrounds, campers engage in a wide range of activities. They can swim in the lagoon, fondly referred to as the "goon," participate in arts and crafts, take part in chores, play games and sports, gather for Quaker worship at the fire circle, engage in singing, and explore other artistic pursuits. The camp property, owned by Baltimore Yearly Meeting since 1953, is protected by a conservation easement with the state of Maryland. It serves as a habitat for several rare plant species and showcases geological rarities, including the presence of Catoctin Greenstone, which can be observed in the walls of the main lodge. The main lodge itself features large preserved beams and rafters crafted from American Chestnut trunks that were formed prior to the devastation caused by the chestnut blight. The camp is currently working on communication with the indigenous people that lived on the land the camp now dwells on.

Thurmont is a town in Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,935 at the 2020 census. The town is located in the northern part of Frederick County (north of Frederick, the county seat), approximately ten miles from the Pennsylvania border, along U.S. Highway 15. It is very close to Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, the latter of which contains the presidential retreat of Camp David. Thurmont is also home to Catoctin Colorfest, an arts and crafts festival that draws in about 125,000 people each autumn. In 2005, Thurmont was designated as a Maryland Main Street Community, and in that year was designated a National Main Street under the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
