La Grange, Kentucky

The McMahan House at 203 Washington St. in La Grange, Kentucky was built in c.1820 as a brick I-house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.It is notable as "the only remaining early nineteenth century structure in LaGrange, Kentucky. As such, the five-bay brick I-house is the town's only tangible link with its early settlement and building period. The double-stretcher Flemish bond of the north facade and the remaining interior Federal moldings and mantles are evidence of the building's early construction date...."It is a contributing building in the Central La Grange Historic District, which is also listed on the National Register.

The Rob Morris Home, located in the east end of the Central La Grange Historic District of La Grange, Kentucky on 102 Washington Street, is the historic home of Rob Morris, the second and last poet laureate of Freemasonry and the founder of the Order of the Eastern Star. Rob Morris came to La Grange initially to serve on the faculty of the Masonic University in 1860, after serving as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky from 1858 to 1859. His first house in La Grange was burned on November 7, 1861, due to Morris' pro-Union stance, although his books regarding Freemasonry were saved (but mangled) by nearby Federal troops. Morris was lecturing at Crown Point, Indiana at the time of the fire for the Grand Lodge of Indiana. Morris considered moving away from La Grange to the state of New York, but decided against it as Kentucky would maintain a state government loyal to the federal government. He bought the house at the corner of Washington and Cedar Streets in 1862 for $1,400; the house had been built in 1840. It was here that he died in 1888, and his wife died at the home in 1893.The Rob Morris Home is considered "one of the most architecturally and historically important houses" within the Central La Grange Historic District. Among the highlights of the architecture of the house are the front doors flanked by overlights and sidelights, a chimney on its west side that is typical of coastal North Carolina chimneys but extremely rare in Kentucky, and a side hall plan. Non-historic additions to the house include a carport.In 1918 the Kentucky Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star purchased the home, and has since kept it as a shrine/museum to Morris. The furnishings within date from the time Rob Morris lived in the home, and some were actually owned by Morris.

The Central La Grange Historic District in La Grange, Kentucky is a 70 acres (28 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It runs primarily along Washington, Main, and Jefferson Sts., Kentucky Ave., and First through Sixth Aves.It includes the Oldham County Courthouse. It includes the D.W. Griffith House and the McMahan House which are separately listed on the National Register.

The Masonic University was an educational facility operated by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky in La Grange, Kentucky, located twenty miles northeast of Louisville, in the mid-nineteenth century. Among its faculty was Kentucky Chief Jurist and Confederate spy Thomas Hines, and Robert Morris, the poet laureate of Freemasonry.

The D. W. Griffith House is a historic building in La Grange, Kentucky in the United States. It was owned by movie director D. W. Griffith, who rose to fame with his movies The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. The house was originally constructed in 1905 as a home for a Charles and Sue Smith, but it later became a funeral parlor. Griffith bought it as a residence for his mother Mary in 1913, who lived there until her death a year later. Afterward, Griffith's sister Ruth lived there until she died in 1934; then Griffith's brother and his family lived in the house. After D. W. Griffith married his second wife, they moved to the home in 1936, staying there until 1939 when Griffith went to California to work on a film. Griffith sold the house in 1940, but his niece lived there until 1950, when it was sold once again to be made into apartments. Griffith never returned to the area, not even to receive the honorary doctorate in literature the University of Louisville gave him in 1945. New owners in 1974 returned the house to a more home-like use.Griffith had always considered La Grange his hometown, having spent his boyhood at a nearby farm until his mother had to sell it for debts left after his father died, and even signed in hotel registers as being from the town, no matter where he was actually living at the time. When Griffith died, as according to his will, his remains were returned to Oldham County and buried eight miles (13 km) south of La Grange in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Centerfield, Kentucky, where his family had a plot.The house today remains privately owned, but is considered a historic attraction. The current owners have lived there since 1983. Several items related to Griffith furnish the house. At the end of the sidewalk by the house one can still see the signature Griffith made in the concrete.

Kentucky State Reformatory (KSR) is a medium-security prison for adult males. The prison is located in unincorporated Oldham County, Kentucky, near La Grange, and about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Louisville. It opened in 1940 to replace the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Frankfort (later known as Kentucky State Reformatory) after a flood damaged the original property. The current (2020) capacity of KSR is 1053 inmates.

Ballardsville is an unincorporated community in Oldham County, Kentucky, United States. It is a small unincorporated community that lies a few miles south of La Grange on KY 53. The community bears the name of a local family.

The Luther Luckett Correctional Complex is a Medium/MINIMUM-security state prison located in Oldham County, near La Grange, Kentucky, about 30 miles northeast of Louisville. It opened in 1981 and had a prison population 1,204 as of 2018. The Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center, which is operated by the Kentucky Health and Family Services Cabinet and is officially a separate facility, is located within the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex and shares several facilities with its host prison. Due to extreme staffing shortages over the 2015–16 fiscal year, the facility now operates on two 12-hour shifts, five days a week. This has been embraced by some as substantial extra income, and heavily criticized by others due to being away from their families so often, as well as being a major source of mental and physical stress. The current administration consists of Warden Scott Jordan, and Deputy Warden of Programs Laura Plappart. Patricia Gunter is Major of Security. The documentary Shakespeare Behind Bars, depicting a production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest by prison inmates, was filmed at Luther Luckett.

Centerfield is an unincorporated community in Oldham County, Kentucky, United States. It is a small suburban community that lies approximately 4 miles northeast of Crestwood on KY Highway 22 and approximately 6.5 miles southwest of La Grange. Nearby schools are Centerfield Elementary, Locust Grove Elementary and East Oldham Middle School. The two closest high schools are Oldham County High School in Buckner and South Oldham High School in Crestwood. Residential services are provided by Louisville Gas & Electric, Oldham County Water Company and Spectrum Cable. Fire and police services are provided by the South Oldham Volunteer Fire Department and the Ballardsville Fire Department as well as the Oldham County Police Department. Businesses include one gas station, one food service facility, and one liquor store. D. W. Griffith is buried at Centerfield's Mount Tabor Methodist Church cemetery.

Oldham County High School (OCHS) is a public high school in Buckner, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1953 and has a student body of approximately 1,600 students in 9th through 12th grades. OCHS was given the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award in 1985 and 2002.

Oldham County is a county located in the north central part of the U.S. state and commonwealth of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,607. Its county seat is La Grange. The county is named for Colonel William Oldham. Oldham County is part of the Louisville/Jefferson County, KY–IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oldham County is the wealthiest county in Kentucky and 47th-wealthiest county in the U.S. and ranks as the most educated county in Kentucky While the causes for this are complicated, areas east of Louisville have long been popular with wealthy residents, initially as summer residences and eventually as year-round suburban estates and bedroom communities. Oldham County lies northeast of the best known of these areas, Anchorage, just outside Louisville's pre-merger East End.

Roederer Correctional Complex is a minimum and medium-security state prison located in Buckner, Oldham County, near La Grange, Kentucky. It is about 30 miles northeast of Louisville. The Kentucky Department of Corrections Assessment and Classification Center is located at Roederer. All new male inmates, with the exception of those sentenced to death, are initially assigned to Roederer until they can be classified and transferred to other prison within the Commonwealth. The prison opened in 1978 and had a prison population of 997 as of 2007.
