Charles Y. Audenried Junior High School was a historic school building located in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1930-1931. It was a three-story, 15 bay, brick building on a raised basement in the Colonial Revival-style. It featured two projecting entrances with stone surrounds, a central entrance with four Doric order columns, projecting brick pilasters, and a brick parapet. The listed building has been demolished and replaced with the modern Universal Audenried Charter High School. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Universal Audenried Charter High School , formerly Charles Y. Audenried High School, is a high school servicing the Grays Ferry area of Philadelphia. The school was originally located at the Charles Y. Audenried Junior High School but was rebuilt in 2008. It was previously directly operated by the School District of Philadelphia. It is still a part of the district's system, and some South Philadelphia residences are assigned to Audenried. In 2011 the School Reform Commission awarded Universal Companies the contract to operate Audenried. Several members of the community, including teachers, and students, were saying that the decision was unfair since Audenried was improving and that previous data from 2005, before the school moved into a new building, were used; more recent state test data were not available.

Pennsylvania's first congressional district includes all of Bucks County and a sliver of Montgomery County in southeastern Pennsylvania. It has been represented by Brian Fitzpatrick since 2019. The state congressional district map was redrawn by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in February 2018 after ruling the previous map unconstitutional due to partisan gerrymandering; the previous 1st district was geographically succeeded by the newly redrawn 2nd district which on November 6, 2018, elected Brendan Boyle, the incumbent from the 13th district. The new first district is similar to the previous eighth district, with the new boundaries going into effect for the 2018 elections and representation thereafter.Fitzpatrick, the incumbent from the previous 8th district, was elected on November 6, 2018, to the newly redrawn 1st district. As of 2022, it is one of nine districts that voted for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election while being held or won by a Republican.

Bartram's Garden is a 50-acre public garden and National Historic Landmark in Southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, situated on Lenape territory on the banks of the Tidal Schuylkill River. It is a venue for art, an access to the tidal river and wetlands, an outdoor classroom, and a living laboratory. Founded in 1728 by botanist John Bartram (1699–1777), it is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America. Bartram's Garden attempts to hold the colonial legacy of the land with a commitment to learn and share the whole truth about of the plants of Southwest Philadelphia and the people who grow them. Bartram's Garden has the only recreational access to the Tidal Schuylkill River, and its trails make up segments of the East Coast Greenway. Its John Bowman Bartram Special Collections Library contains a vast collection of documents and materials related to the history of the Garden, the history of Philadelphia, and the development of the field of botany. The Garden is operated by the non-profit John Bartram Association in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.

Universal Alcorn Charter Elementary School is a charter school located in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located in the historic James Alcorn School building. The building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1931–1932. It is a three-story, nine bay, yellow brick building on a raised basement in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It features two projecting entrances with stone surrounds, a central entrance with arched opening, a two-story projecting bay window, and a crenellated parapet.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Anthony Wayne School is a historic former school building located in the Grays Ferry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Henry deCoursey Richards and built in 1908–1909. It is a four-story, five bay, reinforced concrete building clad in brick and in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It features a projecting entrance with terra cotta ornament, a projecting multi-story terra cotta bay, terra cotta decorative panels, and a parapet. The school was named for United States Army general and statesman Anthony Wayne (1745–1786). The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is now used as senior housing.

The Universal Vare Charter School, formerly the Edwin H. Vare Junior High School, and Edwin H. Vare Middle School, is a historic junior high school building located in the Wilson Park neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is currently a charter school run by Universal Family of Schools. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

In the early morning of June 21, 2019, a fire and multiple explosions occurred at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A release of hydrocarbons and hydrofluoric acid in the refinery's alkylation unit caused a ground-hugging vapor cloud which rapidly ignited, leading to three separate explosions minutes apart. The largest explosion sent a vessel fragment flying 2,000 feet across the Schuylkill River. Five employees sustained minor injuries, but there were ultimately no fatalities. The refinery announced it would shut down operations the same month, and filed for bankruptcy a month later.

Grays Ferry, also known as Gray's Ferry, is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia bounded (roughly) by 25th Street on the east, the Schuylkill River on the west, Vare Avenue on the south, and Grays Ferry Avenue on the north. The section of this neighborhood west of 34th Street is also known as Forgotten Bottom. Grays Ferry shares borders with Southwest Center City to the North, Point Breeze to the East, and Girard Estate to the South. Gray’s Ferry is across from where Mill Creek debouches at about 43rd street. Historically, Grays Ferry was one of the largest enclaves of Irish Americans in the city, and while there are still many Irish left, it is now home to a significant African American population.

Stephen Girard Park is a 4-acre (16,000 m2) park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the South Philadelphia neighborhood of Girard Estate, bounded between West Shunk, West Porter, 21st, and 22nd Streets. Originally it was part of two parcels of land that Stephen Girard purchased in 1797–1798, aggregating seventy-five acres in what was then Passyunk Township, Pennsylvania, which Girard developed into a farming enterprise: 101–107  that grew to 583 acres (236 ha).In 1831 Stephen Girard died, leaving most of his immense estate to "the Mayor, Aldermen and Citizens of Philadelphia",: 178  including his country mansion, Gentilhommerie. By the 1920s, urban development had reached the area, but because Girard's will stipulated that the estate could not be sold, the city initially developed the surrounding area as rental houses. In 1951, the City received permission from Orphans Court to sell the 1920s houses and to transfer the park surrounding the mansion to the City's Fairmount Park Commission.

Bartram Village is a small neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia. It is located in the vicinity of South 56th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard. Bartram village borders Southwest Schuylkill to northeast, Elmwood Park to the west, Kingsessing to the north and the Schuylkill River to the southeast. The neighborhood takes its name from noted botanist John Bartram, whose historical home and gardens, Bartram's Garden, are located nearby. Bartram's Garden, also known as the John Bartram House, is a National Historic Landmark.Bartram Village is also the name of a housing project in the neighborhood located at 54th Street & Elmwood Avenue.

Wat Khmer Palelai Monastery is a Cambodian Theravada Buddhist temple located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The monastery was founded in 1986 in a South Philadelphia row house. In 2010, the community acquired a 238,000-square-foot plot of land, where the current temple stands. The temple complex took nearly a decade to complete as the project was funded over time through donations from the local community.
