Area code 913 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for northeastern Kansas. The numbering plan area (NPA) consists of a small ribbon of eight counties bordering Missouri, an area largely coextensive with the Kansas portion of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Prior to July 20, 1997, numbering plan area 913 comprised all of northern Kansas from the Colorado state line to the Missouri state line, running along the entire border with Nebraska.

Central Baptist Theological Seminary, also known as Central Seminary, is a seminary Shawnee, Kansas, affiliated with American Baptist Churches USA and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.It was founded in 1901 as the Kansas City Baptist Theological Seminary. According to the Schaff–Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, it was founded "to meet the needs of Baptists of the Middle West for an institution devoted exclusively to ministerial education, none such then existing west of Chicago and Louisville." The name was changed to Central Baptist Theological Seminary in 1941. It moved from Kansas City to Shawnee in 2006.Central has been in partnership with Myanmar Institute of Theology since 2009 and with Calvin University in South Korea since 2020.Molly Marshall was appointed president in 2005 and served until 2020. The current president is Pamela Durso.As of 2022, Central has 287 students.

Mill Valley High School is a high school located in Shawnee, Kansas, and operated by De Soto USD 232 public school district. As of the 2020–2021 school year, its attendance is roughly 1,306.Mill Valley is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in the 5A division and are known as the "Jaguars". Extracurricular activities are also offered in the form of performing arts, school publications, and clubs.

The Interstate 435 Bridge is a girder bridge crossing of the Kansas River. It carries six lanes of Interstate 435, three south, three north. It also crosses the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at the north side, and the BNSF Railway at the south. In 2019, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced a two-year rehabilitation project to make repairs on the bridge. The project is expected to cost $32 million.
