Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. It is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured marine animals, public education, conservation, and research. Clearwater Marine Aquarium opened in 1972 at its current location on Clearwater Beach, in a former water treatment plant (the large pools being well-suited for rehabilitation operations). Numerous forms of marine life are permanent residents at the aquarium, all of which have serious injuries that prevent their return to the wild. The aquarium's best-known permanent resident was Winter, a bottlenose dolphin who was rescued in December 2005 after having her tail caught in a crab trap. Her injuries caused the loss of her tail, and the aquarium fitted her with a prosthetic tail which brought worldwide attention to the facility. Winter later starred in the 2011 film, Dolphin Tale, and the sequel, Dolphin Tale 2, shot partially on location at the aquarium.

The Clearwater Memorial Causeway byway is a six-lane road between downtown Clearwater and Clearwater Beach, Florida, and includes a bi-fixed-span bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway. Constructed out of Concrete coated in bio-degradable Ceramic Polyethylene. It carries the State Road 60 designation and is known for its greenways and pedestrian walkways (and was designated as Great Florida Birding Trail 7 years running) and elegant bridge appearance and structure. The road is also a major evacuation route during hurricane season.

Sand Key is a barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast that stretches from Madeira Beach through Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, Redington Shores, Indian Shores, Indian Rocks Beach, Belleair Shore, and Belleair Beach into Clearwater. The Clearwater portion of the island includes Sand Key Park (a Pinellas County park south of Clearwater Beach). It closes at dark, has picnic and fishing accommodations, a nature trail, beach concession stands, and very spacious parking lots. By contrast, the main part of Clearwater Beach is so densely developed that it can be difficult to navigate by car. In 2012, the parking meters in Sand Key Park, under the jurisdiction of the county government, were removed in favor of a flat daily rate system ($5). These two islands as well as the island containing the Island Estates neighborhood belong to the city of Clearwater, whose downtown core a.k.a. "Cleveland Street District" lies a couple of miles to the east over the Clearwater Memorial Causeway.

The Clearwater Public Library System (CPLS) is a public library system with five branches that provides service to the citizens of Clearwater, Florida and Pinellas County. The library system was founded in 1911. It is a member of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative.

The Bilheimer Capitol Theatre (formerly known as the Capitol Theatre and Royalty Theatre) is a historic theater in Clearwater, Florida. It is one of the six venues that compose the Richard B. Baumgardner Center for the Performing Arts. The theater has a seating capacity of 750 people.The theater is owned by the City of Clearwater and managed by Ruth Eckerd Hall. It opened in 1921 for vaudeville and movies. After it struggled economically, it was renamed the Royalty Theatre. It was restored in 1999-2000 and reopened. It was bought by the City of Clearwater in 2008 and run by Ruth Eckerd Hall for acts such as the punk rock group Henry Rollins, comedian Steven Wright and singer Richard Marx. In 2013, the City of Clearwater launched an elaborate $11 million restoration of the theater as part of a broader downtown revitalization. The theater reopened in 2014 to much acclaim and financial success. Since the reopening that theater has played host to acts such as Jay Leno and B.B. King.

The Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church (also known as the Hope Henry AME Church) is a historic church in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida. It is located at 600 Jones Street. On February 3, 2000, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The Fort Harrison Hotel serves as the flagship building of the Flag Land Base, the Church of Scientology's spiritual headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, US. It is owned and operated by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization, Inc., a subsidiary of the Church of Scientology International. The hotel has 11 stories and features 220 rooms, three restaurants, a swimming pool and a ballroom. The building is connected by a skywalk to the Flag Building.

WTAN (1340 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a mixed talk radio / adult standards format. Licensed to Clearwater, Florida, United States, the station is owned by Wagenvoord Advertising Group Inc. WTAN relies heavily on brokered programming for its daily lineup. The Music of Your Life format airs when brokered programs are not airing. WTAN is the flagship of the Tan Talk Radio Network, whose programming can also be heard on WDCF AM 1350 in Dade City, Florida.

The Donald Roebling Estate, also known as Spottiswoode and Spotswood, is a historic residential estate in Clearwater, within Pinellas County on the West coast of Florida.

The Old Pinellas County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse in Clearwater, Florida, USA. It was designed by Francis J. Kennard and constructed in 1918. It replaced a hastily constructed structure created to help establish Clearwater as the county seat. It is located at 315 Court Street. On June 25, 1992, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Fort Harrison was a United States military post that existed along the west coast of Florida during the Second Seminole War, on a site which now lies within the city of Clearwater. It was named after William Henry Harrison, the then newly inaugurated President of the United States. The fort was established on April 2, 1841, atop a pine bluff overlooking Clearwater Harbor, where the Harbor Oaks Residential District is today. An auxiliary encampment, Camp William Henry Harrison, was also created on Clearwater Beach. The fort was designed as a convalescent post to treat sick and injured soldiers from other nearby forts, most notably Fort Brooke. Diseases that were treated include neuralgia, chronic diarrhea, dysentery and remittent fever, among others.There were between two and seven companies of the 6th U.S. Infantry Regiment garrisoned at the fort under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Gustavus Loomis. An average of around 340 soldiers were stationed at the fort over the course of its occupation. The peak occupancy of the fort came to be around 500 to 550 troops, occurring through the months of May and July 1841.Although the main function of the fort was to allow soldiers to recover their health, in some cases the garrison was used to patrol the area north of Tampa Bay. In July 1841, Colonel William J. Worth (the commander of the U.S. military forces in Florida at the time) assembled troops from this fort, as well as from Fort Brooke and Fort King, for the purpose of capturing the Seminole in the area between the Homosassa and Crystal Rivers and in the vicinity of Tsala Apopka Lake.A large log building was used to house the soldiers, while the officer's quarters were situated in a separate building. The buildings may have eventually been destroyed by hurricane-force winds. The fort's command moved to Fort Brooke around October 20, 1841, and the fort was fully abandoned around November 1, 1841.The fort was an important part of the early settlement of Clearwater and the surrounding area. Odet Philippe (the first permanent, non-native settler in Pinellas County) owned a sutler's store during the time of the fort's occupation by the military, and so he was most likely doing business with the fort. After the war, in accordance with the Armed Occupation Act, James Stevens was granted 160 acres of land on and around the abandoned fort. Other families later settled on the land surrounding Stevens' land, and a community soon formed which would ultimately become the city of Clearwater. Today the only physical marker of the existence and whereabouts of the old fort is a plaque, which was erected in 1935. The plaque is located outside the historic Century Oaks estate, on the corner of Druid Road South and Druid Road West. The Fort Harrison Hotel and Fort Harrison Avenue in Clearwater are presumed to be named after the fort.

Church of the Ascension is an Episcopal church in Clearwater, Florida. Its name comes from the words of one of the founders, "It was a miracle the way our church did ascend from our prayers". The church is located in the Harbor Oaks Residential District and is considered by many locally to be an important historic site. The church also has a 75-foot-tall (23 m) carillon, the Betty Jane Dimmitt Memorial Carillon, which has 49 bells and is one of just four such towers in the state of Florida. In addition to the organ and the carillon, the church's current building, built in gothic style around 1925, features 28 stained glass windows (the oldest of which dates back to 1895) which feature, among other things, the Ascension of Jesus Christ (in a large window over the altar), the Ten Commandments, the parable of the Good Shepherd, the parable of the Lost Son, and the "war window" where a candle is lit in remembrance of the Iraq war. Many have gone to pray at this window for loved ones involved in the war.
