Dmitrov

Dmitrovsky District (Russian: Дми́тровский райо́н) is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the thirty-six in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It is located in the north of the oblast and borders with Tver Oblast in the northwest, Klinsky District in the west, Solnechnogorsky District in the southwest, Taldomsky District in the north, Sergiyevo-Posadsky District in the east, Pushkinsky District in the southeast, and with Mytishchinsky District in the south. The area of the district is 2,182.02 square kilometers (842.48 sq mi). Its administrative center is the town of Dmitrov. Population: 151,448 (2010 Census); 149,793 (2002 Census); 92,080 (1989 Census). The population of Dmitrov accounts for 40.5% of the district's total population.

Perimilovsky Heights (Перемиловские высоты) is a place of bloody battles on the eastern front during the World War II from November 27 to December 5, 1941. It was named after the village of Peremilovo, Dmitrovsky District, Moscow Oblast, located on the left (eastern) bank of the Moscow Canal opposite the town of Yakhroma (now the eastern part of Yakhroma), right next to the bridge over the canal. This is one of the frontiers where the Wehrmacht troops were stopped, the easternmost point of their advance on the fronts north of Moscow. At the end of November 1941 Wehrmacht troops approached Dmitrov from the west, from where they shelled the town. A group of enemy tanks broke through to Dmitrov from the direction of Yakhroma, but were defeated by the fire of Soviet army. Due to its steep slopes, extended for 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) along the canal, the height of more than 50 metres (160 ft) above it, it literally overhangs the Yakhroma bridge. Due to its length and steep slopes, the height gives the impression of not one, but several heights, which is why this place is called "Peremilovsky Heights". The opposite, western bank of the channel, is a gentle, long ascent. From this location, the advancing enemy looks like it could fit "in the palm of your hand". It is an object of Russian cultural heritage.

Yakhroma (Russian: Я́хрома) is a town in Dmitrovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located on the Yakhroma River, 55 kilometers (34 mi) north of Moscow. Population: 13,214 (2010 Census); 13,361 (2002 Census); 17,499 (1989 Census).

Dedenevo (Russian: Деде́нево) or Dedenyovo (Russian: Деденёво) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Dmitrovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia. Population: 6,319 (2010 Russian census); 6,509 (2002 Census); 7,626 (1989 Soviet census).

Paramonovo (Russian: Парамо́ново) is a village in Dmitrovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located 80 kilometers (50 mi) west of Moscow. It is well known for its winter sports activities.

The Paramonovo bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton located in Paramonovo, Russia, 60 kilometers (37 mi) outside of Moscow.

Iksha (Russian: И́кша) is an urban locality (a work settlement) in Dmitrovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located 45 kilometers (28 mi) north of Moscow along the Dmitrov highway and the Moscow Canal, and is a junction of the Savyolovo Railway. Population: 3,721 (2010 Russian census); 3,738 (2002 Census); 4,619 (1989 Soviet census). The settlement was founded during the construction of the railroad from Moscow to Dmitrov in 1889. It further developed due to the construction of the Moscow Canal in the 1930s. The main point of interest is a cascade of Moscow Canal locks on the Iksha Reservoir built in Socialist Classicism style.

Trudovaya (Russian: Трудовая) is a rural locality (a settlement) in Mytishchinsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located 26 kilometers (16 mi) northwest from Mytishchi (the district's administrative centre). Population: 62 (2005 est.).

Bely Rast High Voltage Research Station (Russian: Белый Раст) is a facility for the development of high voltage equipment in Russia, situated at Bely Rast, Moscow Oblast near the eponymous station of the Greater Ring of the Moscow Railway. Built in 1966, the equipment of the 750 kV- and 1150 kV-lines in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union were first developed and tested at this facility, as well as the equipment for the never completed HVDC Ekibastuz–Centre. The facility also has an unused 1150 kV AC and a 1500 kV DC line. The DC line was the prototype of the never finished HVDC Ekibastuz–Centre.

Laryovo (Russian: Ларёво) is a rural locality (a village) in Mytishchinsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, located on the banks of the Samoryadovka River.

The Don-2N radar (Russian: Дон-2Н, NATO: Pill Box) is a large missile defense and early warning active electronically scanned array radar outside Moscow, and a key part of the Russian A-135 anti-ballistic missile system designed for the defense of the capital against ballistic missiles. Located near Sofrino in Pushkinsky District of Moscow Oblast, it is a quadrangular frustum 33 m (108 ft) tall with sides 130 m (427 ft) long at the bottom, and 90 m (295 ft) long at the top. Each of its four faces has an 18 m (59 ft) diameter Super high frequency band radar giving 360 degree coverage. To the right of each circular search and track array, separated by a vertical structure for shielding, is a square antenna array (edge length 10 m) for guiding the interceptor missile by data link. The system is run by an Elbrus-2 (Russian: Эльбрус-2) supercomputer. It has a range of 3,700 km for targets the size of a typical ICBM warhead. Under the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty both the United States and the Soviet Union had to designate one area to protect from missile attack. The USA chose North Dakota and the Soviet Union chose Moscow. The Don-2N radar is designed to be the control centre of the system and can operate autonomously if connection is lost to its command and control centre. The 1998 SIOP targeted this radar facility with 69 consecutive nuclear weapons.
