Jay Peak (Vermont)

Jay State Forest covers 7,951 acres (32.18 km2) in two tracts in Jay, Richford, Montgomery and Westfield in Franklin and Orleans counties in Vermont. The forest is managed by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. The forest is divided into two tracts, Black Falls (3,764 acres (15.23 km2)) and Big Jay (1,573 acres (6.37 km2)), which features Jay Peak and Jay Peak Resort. Activities include hiking on the Long Trail and skiing at Jay Peak Resort.

Big Jay is a 3,786-foot (1,154 m) mountain in the northern Green Mountains of Vermont, located on the border of Franklin and Orleans counties. The summit of Big Jay is the highest point of Franklin County. Big Jay is flanked to the south by Little Jay (3,182 ft or 970 m), and to the northeast by Jay Peak (3,865 ft or 1,178 m), the highest summit of the Jay Peak complex. Jay Peak is named for John Jay (1745–1829) of New York, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Big Jay stands within the watershed of the Trout River, a tributary of the Missisquoi River, which drains into Lake Champlain, thence into Canada's Richelieu River, the Saint Lawrence River, and into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The east and southeast sides of Big Jay drain into Jay Brook, which joins the South Branch Trout River in Montgomery to form the Trout River. The southwest and western sides of Big Jay drain into Hannah Clark Brook, and thence into the Trout. The northern end of Big Jay drains into Black Falls Brook, and thence into the Trout. There is no official hiking trail on Big Jay, although there is a herd path to the summit from Jay Peak. There is also a summit register. In the summer of 2007 two men cut an illegal ski trail several hundred yards down the eastern side of the protected habitat. The offense carries a maximum $5,000 fine and five years in jail. Hikers and skiers have been encouraged to stay away from the scar caused by the vandalism so that the area can recover.

The Orleans-Franklin-1 Representative District is a one-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Orleans-Franklin-1 District includes all of the Orleans County towns of Jay, Lowell, Troy, and Westfield, and the Franklin County town of Montgomery. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The one member Orleans-Franklin-1 District had a population of 4,223 in that same census, 4.04% above the state average.

Jay is one of the northernmost towns in Orleans County, Vermont, United States, located on the Canada–US border. The population was 551 at the 2020 census. Jay is named for John Jay, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The US Census Bureau estimated that the town's population had increased by 13.1% between 2000 and 2005, the seventh largest increase in the state. Jay is also home to the Jay Challenge, a three-part stage-race, typically held in July.

Montgomery Center is an unincorporated village in the town of Montgomery, Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The community is located at the intersection of Vermont Routes 58, 118, and 242, 10 miles (16 km) east-southeast of Enosburg Falls. Montgomery Center has a post office with ZIP code 05471.

The Community Baptist Church and Parsonage are a historic church property at 2 and 10 Mountain Road in the center of Montgomery, Vermont. The church, built in 1866, is a prominently placed example of Greek Revival architecture, while the adjacent parsonage house is a well-preserved example of the Colonial Revival. The church was for many years a center of social activities in the town, prior to its closure in 2011. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Montgomery is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population as of the 2020 census was 1,184. In 1963, part of Avery's Gore in Franklin County became part of Montgomery, with the other section becoming part of Belvidere in Lamoille County.

Westfield is a town in Orleans County, Vermont United States. The population was 534 at the 2020 census. The town was founded in 1780 and named after Rhode Island general and politician, William West, a supporter of Vermont statehood. Westfield is home to the Monastery of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a contemplative order of women, following the Benedictine rule.

The South Branch Trout River is a tributary of the Trout River, flowing successively in Belvidere and in Montgomery, in Lamoille County and in Franklin County, in northern Vermont in the United States. The valley of the South Branch Trout River is served by South Main Street (VT 118) passing on the eastern shore of the river. The surface of the South Branch Trout River is usually frozen from mid-December to mid-March, except the rapids areas; however, safe circulation on the ice is generally from late December to early March.

The Hutchins Covered Bridge is a wooden covered bridge that crosses the South Branch of the Trout River in Montgomery, Vermont on Hutchins Bridge Road. It was built in 1883 by Sheldon & Savannah Jewett, brothers who are credited with building most of the area's covered bridges. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Hectorville Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge in Montgomery, Vermont. Originally located on Gibou Road off Vermont Route 118 in central Montgomery, the bridge is currently (2016) in storage. It was built by Sheldon & Savannah Jewett, who are credited with building all of Montgomery's surviving 19th century covered bridges. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Fuller Covered Bridge, also known as the Blackfalls Covered Bridge is a wooden covered bridge that crosses Black Falls Brook in Montgomery, Vermont on Fuller Bridge Road. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The bridge is one of a concentrated regional collection built by brothers Sheldon & Savannah Jewett.
