Caergwrle

Caergwrle Castle (Welsh: Castell Caergwrle), also known as Queen's Hope in scholarly texts, is located in the town of Caergwrle, in Flintshire, Wales. It was built by the Welsh under Dafydd ap Gruffydd in service to Edward I of England. When Dafydd's forces rebelled against the English, Edward sent Reginald de Grey, 1st Baron Grey de Wilton to take the castle in June 1282, but Dafydd had retreated and sabotaged the structure. Rebuilding works began, and it was given to Edward's wife, Eleanor of Castile. A town was planned at the base of the castle, but this was abandoned after a fire broke out in September 1283 when both Edward and Eleanor were present. It was passed down the royal line, but was never rebuilt. In 1823, a workman discovered the Caergwrle Bowl near the castle; it is a unique Bronze Age bowl.

Hope (Welsh: Yr Hôb) is a small village and community in Flintshire, north-east Wales. The village is located approximately 3 miles / 4.5 km from the Wales-England border, on the course of the River Alyn, and less than 5 miles from Wrexham. Hope is one of several villages including Caergwrle, Abermorddu and Cefn-y-bedd which together form the community. At the 2001 Census, community the population was 2,522, increasing to 4,224 at the 2011 Census partly due to boundary changes. One of the major features in the area is Hope Mountain (Mynydd yr Hob), to the west of the village.

Abermorddu () is a village in the county of Flintshire, Wales, in the community of Hope. Approximately 5 miles north of Wrexham along the A541 road, it is contiguous with the main village of Caergwrle and closely related to the village of Hope. In the 19th century there was a turnpike road known as Abermorddu Branch running from the tollhouse at King's Ferry to Abermorddu.Its name probably comes from the confluence (aber) of a small brook called Morddu with the River Alyn.

Rhydyn Hall (or Rhyddyn Hall), near Caergwrle in Flintshire, Wales, is an 18th-century building with two storeys with a later wing to the north-west. It has a slate roof, Doric porch and iron verandahs, and was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1962 as a good example of an early 18th century gentry house with good surviving interior detail.Following a partial fire, the decorators left graffiti dated July 18, 1839 to record the completion of the work for the owner Richard Golightly. Some minor remodelling was carried out around 1900 when the Hall was developed into a spa and hotel.

Cefn-y-bedd () is a village in Flintshire, north-east Wales. The name translates into English as "the ridge of the grave", in reference to an old tumulus which a local tale said was the burial place of Gwrle Gawr, the legendary figure after whom Caergwrle was said to be named.Cefn-y-bedd is on the A541 road to the south of its junction with the A550 road at Abermorddu. Cymau is a small village situated in the community of Llanfynydd, Flintshire on the edge of the mountains of north-east Wales. Its name is the Welsh word cymau, a plural of cwm, "valley". The village is located on the side of Hope Mountain, a land feature that can be seen for miles around. Neighbouring villages include Ffrith to the west and Brymbo to the south. The nearest settlements are Wrexham to the south-east and Mold towards the north-west.The area is known for its scenery and hill-walking routes. The summit of Hope Mountain offers views of the Cheshire Plain and, in the opposite direction, it is possible to see sunsets behind the Welsh hills.The population of Cymau is around 350. The village had a pub (The Old Talbot Inn, now closed) and one parish church with a roof made from corrugated iron and also a chapel. The former village post office and general store closed in 2009.During the winter months, despite the local bus being occasionally unable to traverse the terrain, the village remains reasonably accessible.

The River Cegidog (Welsh: Afon Cegidog) is a river in north-east Wales. It flows mainly through Flintshire but towards the end of its course it forms the border between Flintshire and Wrexham County Borough. Its source lies in the hills of southernmost Flintshire to the east of Rhydtalog village. It flows in a roughly north-easterly direction before turning south-east through the villages of Llanfynydd and Ffrith where the Nant-y-Ffrith stream flows into it. It then heads north-east again through a wooded valley before joining the River Alyn at Cefn-y-bedd. The name of the river indicates a place where hemlock grows.

Sydallt is a village in Gwersyllt community, Wrexham County Borough, north Wales. It had a population of 422 as of the 2011 UK census.
