Burton Bradstock

The River Bride is a river in Dorset, England, situated between the towns of Dorchester and Bridport. It is approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) long and has a catchment area of 15 square miles (39 km2). It rises at an altitude of 90 metres (300 ft) beneath an artificial lake at Bridehead House, Littlebredy, then flows west to its mouth on the English Channel near Burton Bradstock. It has nine tributaries and descends more than 60 metres (200 ft) in its first three miles. It reaches the coast just west of Burton Bradstock through a break in coastal cliffs at Burton Freshwater; here it meets the western end of Chesil Beach where it "forms itself into a pool and fights to get to the sea intact before sinking into the shingle."The river's name is of Celtic origin. It is derived from Old Welsh Brydi, related to Cornish bredion "to boil", so means "boiling or gushing" stream. The river gives its name to Long Bredy, Littlebredy, Burton Bradstock and probably Bridport.

Shipton Gorge is a village and civil parish in southwest Dorset, England, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Bridport. Dorset County Council's 2013 mid-year estimate of the population of Shipton Gorge parish is 350. In the 2011 national census, results have been published for the parish of Shipton Gorge combined with the small neighbouring parish of Chilcombe to the east; the population of these areas was 381.In 1086 in the Domesday Book Shipton Gorge was recorded as Sepetone. The village is named after the de Gorges family who owned the land hundreds of years ago. The parish church of St Martin—which used to be a chapel of Burton Bradstock—was rebuilt in 1862, except for its west tower which dates from around 1400.The terrain surrounding the village is hilly. Northeast of the village is Shipton Hill, which offers good views of the surrounding countryside from its 170 metres (560 ft) summit. On the hill is evidence of a prehistoric settlement.Squadron Leader Ted Flavell, who in 1956 had carried out the first British air drop of an atomic bomb during Operation Buffalo, lived in Shipton Gorge during his retirement.

Holy Trinity Old Church in Bothenhampton, Dorset, England was built in the 13th or 14th century. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is now a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It was declared redundant on 1 April 1971, and was vested in the Trust on 23 October 1972.

The River Asker is a small river in Dorset, England. It rises on the chalk slopes of Eggardon Hill, approximately five miles (8 km) east of Bridport. It flows west-northwest through the villages of Askerswell to which it gives its name, Uploders, where many cottages have gardens backing onto the river, and Loders. Here it heads west towards Bradpole, where it is joined by the small Mangerton Brook flowing in from the north. It then flows southwest into Bridport, passing underneath the A3066 and B3162 roads in the town. In this section there are weirs and fish ladders. South of the B3162, between Bridport and Bothenhampton, the river also forms the western boundary of the Askers Meadow Nature Reserve, which was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2004. The river then flows under the B3157 road and joins the River Brit beside Palmers Brewery in the south of the town.

Walditch is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Bothenhampton, in the Dorset district, in the ceremonial county of Dorset, England. It is situated about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the east of the town of Bridport. The name Walditch is derived from an older term Waldyke, which alludes to the village's location: Walditch is located in the valley of a curved hill that encompasses the village; the hill has a dry stone wall still partially in place, which continues over towards Bothenhampton. In 1891 the parish had a population of 175. In 1897 the parish was abolished and merged with Brothenhampton and Bridport.Walditch has a real tennis court, on the site of which Henry VII of England played during his visits to the area. Walditch is composed of Old Walditch (the original Walditch) and lower Walditch, a housing estate built around 1998. The village no longer has a stated member of clergy; the last person to fill this role being the Rev. Maureen Alchin, who was a local figure. Walditch formerly lay within the Hundred of Godderthorne.

Bothenhampton is a village and civil parish in southwest Dorset, England, just outside the town of Bridport. It is separated from the town only by the River Asker and the A35 Bridport by-pass. In the 2011 census the civil parish—which includes the settlement of Walditch—had a population of 2,131.The parish church, Holy Trinity, was designed by the Arts and Crafts movement architect Edward Schroeder Prior in 1889. It was his first church. By the late 19th century the 15th century Old Holy Trinity Church had fallen into disrepair. There are 2 Commonwealth War Graves in the old churchyard. The new church was funded by J. P. F. Gundry, one of the directors of the West Bay Building Company, by public subscription and anonymous donation. The roof is the most radical feature of the church. The arches spring at 2’6 above floor level and rise to a ridge 30’ high. The windows are filled with a forerunner of Prior's Early English glass. The altar table and furnishings were designed by another leading Arts and Crafts Movement architect, William Lethaby, as was the altar front with its intertwined wild roses, leaves and stems. At the end of the village is the village park, which is a memorial to John Holt. Annual events, such as a barn dance organised by the Bothenhampton village hall committee, take place in the John Holt play area. In 1801 the population was 334 and in 1901 this was still only 423. New houses were built between the 1st and 2nd world wars and there was a lot of building in the 1960s. By 1980 the population had grown to approx 1200 and by 2001 it had become 2186. By 2001 11% of Bothenhampton's population were aged under 16, 42% were aged between 16 and 59 and 47% were aged 60 and over.

Holy Trinity Church is a Church of England parish church at Bothenhampton, near Bridport in Dorset, England. It was designed and built by the English arts and crafts architect Edward Schroeder Prior in 1887–89. It is a Grade II* listed building.

West Bay railway station was the terminus of the Bridport Railway in western Dorset, England. In 1879, the Great Western Railway, who held the operating licence for the original Bridport Railway (which ran as far as Bridport town), decided to extend the railway to Bridport Harbour. Construction started in 1883, and the line opened on 31 March 1884. The station was called West Bay by the GWR in order to encourage holiday traffic. The line between West Bay and Bridport closed to passengers in 1930, and operated for goods services only until its final closure in 1962.

St John's Church is a Church of England church in West Bay, Dorset, England. It was built in 1935–39 to the designs of William Henry Randoll Blacking and has been a Grade II listed building since 1975.

The Riverside Restaurant was a seafood restaurant in West Bay, England. The building is situated on a causeway and as such the dining area was on two levels with views of the river and beyond to the sea. In 2006 locally based food writer Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall listed it as one of his top five seafood restaurants. In 2004 it was voted one of The Observer newspaper's Top 10 Seafood Restaurants. Fearnley-Whittingstall has also described it as arguably the most child-friendly restaurant in the country. It also received critical acclaim from indulgesouthwest.co.uk food magazine and Harden's Restaurant GuideThe restaurant served local fish and was traditionally closed in the December and January months (the months when the fishermen do not go out in the area due to rough seas).

The Shipton Hill Settlement is an archaeological site, a defended settlement of the Iron Age, near Shipton Gorge in Dorset, England. It is a scheduled monument.
