It is the biggest town in La Valldigna, a horseshoe shape valley bordered by mountains (Iberian and Betic mountains) on the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. Tavernes gained a City title in December 1916, by King Alfonso XIII. The mayor is Jordi Juan Huguet (2011-). According to the Spanish Statistic National Institute, INE, in 2010 there were 18.130 inhabitants in Tavernes: 9.126 men and 9.004 women.

Cueva de Bolomor, or Bolomor Cave, is an archaeological site near Tavernes de la Valldigna in the Valencian Community, Spain. It was occupied over a long period of time, between 350,000 and 120,000 years ago. Four Neanderthal remains have been recovered in excavations that were begun in 1989: a fragment of a fibula, two teeth, and a nearly complete parietal bone from an adult. All date from the late Middle/early Late Pleistocene. The thickness of the cortical bone in the fibula indicates it came from non-modern man.

El Surar (in Spanish, El Paraje Natural Municipal de El Surar) is a Municipal Natural Park located in the east of Spain, within the comarca of Vall d'Albaida in the autonomous community of Valencia; it is shared between the municipalities of Pinet and Llutxent. El Surar is the southernmost cork oak forest in Valencia. It consists of a series of open copses that are the remains of more extensive, older forests. Unlike the cork forests located further to the north of the Valencian Community, it has the singularity of inhabiting soils evolved from calcareous subsoils. Cork oak forests usually occur in siliceous soils, and as such its presence in El Surar is explained by the intense rainfall recorded in the area, which washes away the soil and results in high levels of decarbonisation and acidification. El Surar was declared Municipal Natural Park by Generalitat Valenciana on March 4, 2005.The Municipal Natural Park of Parpalló-Borrell is to be found in the adjacent municipality of Barx.

The Battle of Bairén was fought between the forces of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as "El Cid", in coalition with Peter I of Aragon, against the forces of the Almoravid dynasty, under the command of Muhammad ibn Tasufin.
