Fitzroy is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 3 km north-east of the city's Central Business District (CBD) and located in the local government area of the City of Yarra. As of 2016, Fitzroy had a population of 10,445. Planned as Melbourne's first suburb in 1839, it later became one of the city's first areas to gain municipal status, in 1858. It occupies Melbourne's smallest and most densely populated area outside the CBD, just 100 ha. Fitzroy is known as a cultural hub, particularly for its live music scene and street art, and is the main home of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Its commercial heart is Brunswick Street, one of Melbourne's major retail, culinary, and nightlife strips. Long associated with the working class, Fitzroy has undergone waves of urban renewal and gentrification since the 1980s and today is home to a wide variety of socio-economic groups, featuring both some of the most expensive rents in Melbourne and one of its largest public housing complexes, Atherton Gardens. Its built environment is diverse and features some of the finest examples of Victorian era architecture in Melbourne. Much of the suburb is a historic preservation precinct, with many individual buildings and streetscapes covered by Heritage Overlays. The most recent changes to Fitzroy are mandated by the Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan Strategy, in which both Brunswick Street and nearby Smith Street are designated for redevelopment as Activity centres. It was named after Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy, the Governor of New South Wales from 1846 to 1855. It is bordered by Alexandra Parade (north), Victoria Parade (south), Smith Street (east) and Nicholson Street.

The Old Bar (2001) is a bar and live music venue on the premises of 74–76 Johnston St, between Brunswick and Nicholson streets, in Fitzroy, an inner city suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The venue currently operates 7 days a week with performances most nights, often at no cost during the week. Residencies are also a regular occurrence at the venue, with a band playing one particular night of the week for the duration of a month, usually with different support acts each time.

The Punters Club was a pub and live music venue located on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, in inner Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.It developed a reputation as one of the city's premier live music venues, drawing comparisons to the likes of New York's CBGB. It was also noted for its rough, alternative, yet casual atmosphere with audiences sometimes sitting on the floor while watching bands.

The City of Fitzroy was a local government area located about 2 kilometres (1 mi) northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of 3.73 square kilometres (1.44 sq mi), making it the smallest municipality by land area in Victoria, and existed from 1858 until 1994.

The electoral district of Fitzroy was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in the British colony and later Australian state of Victoria, centred on the inner-Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.

Fitzroy Town Hall is a civic building located in Napier Street in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. It was constructed in two separate stages. The first consisted of a hall and tower which was designed by William J. Ellis and built in 1873. Between 1887 and 1890 a new stage designed by George Johnson was added to this comprising municipal offices, a police station and a courthouse as well as extensions to the hall. The clock tower added at this time replaced the original tower. The building is an example of the Free Classical style of Victorian architecture and is recorded as a "Heritage place" by Heritage Victoria.After the amalgamation of the City of Fitzroy with the Cities of Collingwood and Richmond in 1994 forming the City of Yarra, the Town Hall now functions as secondary offices, service centre and library servicing the Collingwood area for the City of Yarra. The Town Hall is also used for special functions and as an exhibition space.

The Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP), in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria, is a venue for the exhibition of contemporary photo-based arts, providing a context for the enjoyment, education, understanding and appraisal of contemporary practice.

Completed in 2001, Napier Street Housing is a residential complex in Fitzroy, Victoria, designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects. The design was awarded the RAIA Residential Multiple Award in 2002. The project is a medium-density development which articulates many of Kerstin Thompson's architectural ideologies regarding ideas on the "interstitial" as a mode of thinking around architecture, and a preference for hybrid and complex solutions rather than single expressions. These ideologies resulted in two strong themes, a distinctive entanglement with the idea of context and a creative approach towards dwelling configurations.

Smith Street is a street in inner northern Melbourne, running north from the city proper and separating Fitzroy from Collingwood. In 2021, Smith Street was named the coolest street in the world.

Cairo Flats is a heritage-listed apartment building in the Melbourne inner city suburb of Fitzroy. The building was designed in 1935 by architect Acheson Best Overend and built in 1936. It is a U-shaped, two story building comprising 28 apartments, mostly studio flats. Overend was influenced by modernist architect Wells Coates and the "minimum flat concept". Each apartment was designed to "provide maximum amenity in minimum space for minimum rent". The building's cantilevered external concrete stairs was noted as an unusual innovation.

The Academy of Mary Immaculate is a Catholic girls' secondary school, situated in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1857.

Backwoods Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, Australia. Founded in August 2010 the gallery exhibits Australian and international artists with a focus on urban contemporary art, street art and illustration. In December 2013, Complex magazine listed Backwoods Gallery in the top ten "Street Art Galleries You Should Know About".
