Charlton St Peter

The A342 is an A road in England that runs from Pewsham near Chippenham, Wiltshire to Andover, Hampshire.

Charlton St Peter and Wilsford Joint Parish Council is a grouped parish council serving the adjacent civil parishes of Charlton St Peter and Wilsford, in the Vale of Pewsey in the English county of Wiltshire. Charlton and Wilsford elect a single parish council since their populations are small; in 2021, Wilsford had 66 electors and Charlton approximately 132. Wilsford elects two parish councillors, and Charlton five. The parishes fall within the area of the Wiltshire Council unitary authority, which is responsible for most significant local government functions. When the joint parish council was formed, sometime before 2011, it was called Charlton and Wilsford Parish Council. During consultation for a community governance review in 2021–2022 it was proposed that St Peter should be added to the name, to reflect local usage and make a distinction from the Charlton parish in north Wiltshire. Accordingly, in May 2022, Wiltshire Council formally amended the name of the parish council to Charlton St Peter and Wilsford Joint Parish Council.

Rushall is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Devizes and 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) northwest of Upavon on the A342 between Devizes and Andover. The village is near the River Avon in the Vale of Pewsey. The parish extends southeast onto Salisbury Plain and into the military training area.

North Newnton is a civil parish in Wiltshire, England, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) southwest of Pewsey. The parish is in the Vale of Pewsey which carries the upper section of the Salisbury Avon. The parish includes the small village of Bottlesford and the hamlet of Hilcott.

Flight Lieutenant James Anderson Slater (27 November 1896 – 26 November 1925) was a British First World War flying ace, credited with 24 aerial victories. He served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as an instructor after the war until killed in a flying accident.

Casterley Camp is the site of an Iron Age univallate hillfort in Wiltshire, England, about 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) south-west of the village of Upavon. The site comprises a large Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure, possibly non-defensive in function, and incomplete. It was partially excavated in the 19th century. Three apparently related enclosures are identified within the site of Casterley Camp. Stock control and religious functions have been attributed to the enclosures. There is also an Iron Age/Romano-British trackway on the west side of the site, with traces of earth banks on both sides. The site is a scheduled monument.There are public footpaths and bridleways to the north and west of the site. Since 1898, land immediately west and south has been part of the Salisbury Plain firing ranges. The site of a smaller Iron Age hill fort, Chisenbury Camp, lies on the other side of the River Avon valley, about 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) to the east.

Upavon is a rural village and civil parish in the county of Wiltshire, England. As its name suggests, it is on the upper portion of the River Avon which runs from north to south through the village. It is on the north edge of Salisbury Plain about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Pewsey, 10 miles (16 km) southeast of the market town of Devizes, and 20 miles (32 km) north of the cathedral city of Salisbury. The A345 and A342 roads run through the village.

Wilsford is a small village and civil parish in the Vale of Pewsey in the English county of Wiltshire, about 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Pewsey. The Salisbury Avon forms part of the northern boundary of the parish. To the south, beyond the A342 from Devizes to Upavon, the parish extends onto Salisbury Plain.

Upavon Priory was a small priory in Wiltshire, England. Domesday Book in 1086 recorded land at Upavon held by the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Wandrille, Normandy. A priory was probably established in the 12th century, and in the 13th the church became a prebend of Salisbury. A valuation in 1324 found livestock, two horses, two beds, three tables and sparse chapel fittings. Around this time the nearby church at Charlton St Peter had been appropriated to the priory.Monks of alien priories were expelled from England in 1378, and the priory became a farm. In 1423 Upavon Priory was granted to the Augustinian canons of Ivychurch Priory, south-east of Salisbury, who held it until the Dissolution.There are intermittent records of priors of Upavon between 1262 and 1361. The last remaining building, a barn on a site between the church and the River Avon, was demolished in the early 1820s.

Bottlesford is a small village in Wiltshire, England, in the parish of North Newnton. It is in the Vale of Pewsey and is about 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Pewsey. There is a pub, the Seven Stars Inn.The Berks and Hants Extension Railway, opened from Hungerford to Devizes in 1862, passes north of Bottlesford. Sometime after 1958 the boundary of Woodborough parish was moved south to follow the railway, transferring the north end of Bottlesford into Woodborough. The properties immediately north of the railway are labelled as Free Trade on a 1958 map, but that name is not used today.Until sometime after 1971, Bottlesford was within Manningford parish, in the tithing of Manningford Bohune which had been part of Wilsford parish until 1871.

All Saints' Church is a former Church of England church in Manningford Bohune, Wiltshire, England. Designed by Whitley C. Clacy, the church was built in 1858–59 and declared redundant in 1973. It is now a private residence and has been a Grade II listed building since 1952.

Manningford is a civil parish in Wiltshire, England. The parish includes the villages of Manningford Abbots, Manningford Bohune and Manningford Bruce, and the hamlet of Manningford Bohune Common, together known as the Manningfords. The parish is in the Vale of Pewsey which carries the upper section of the Salisbury Avon. Pewsey is about 2 miles (3.2 km) to the northeast; the nearest towns are Marlborough, 8 miles (13 km) northeast, and Devizes, 9 miles (14 km) to the west. The parish is long and narrow in shape, stretching from the Salisbury Avon valley in the northwest to higher downland towards Upavon, on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain. The A345 Pewsey–Upavon road passes to the south of the three villages.
