Grafton, Virginia

Grafton High School is a public high school located in Grafton, an unincorporated section of York County, Virginia. It is part of the York County School Division. The school opened on September 3, 1996 and shares a facility with Grafton Middle School, the only shared facility of this type in the Hampton Roads area, and the largest building in York County at the time of its construction. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's AA Bay Rivers, District, and in Region I. Grafton High School was awarded a silver medal by U.S. News & World Report in the 2008 America’s Best High Schools search.

Tabb is an unincorporated community in York County, Virginia, United States, on the Virginia Peninsula. Major roads include U.S. Route 17 and State Route 134 (Hampton Highway, which continues as Magruder Boulevard in Hampton). The community was named for Mary Octavia Tabb who served as postmaster from 21 December 1893 until early 1910, as per National Archives and Records Administration. It is home to Tabb High School, one of four high schools in York County. It is also home to Tabb Middle School, Tabb Elementary School, and Mount Vernon Elementary School. This area is also referred to as York County. York County is one of the eight original shires formed in colonial Virginia in 1682. Tabb is primarily a residential community, with a few commercial interests. The largest employer in Tabb is a Walmart Supercenter department store built in the early 2000s on the site of a former Cinema-City drive-in theater and grocery store at the intersection of U.S. Route 17 and State Route 171. Other major employers nearby include the NASA Langley Research Center, Newport News Shipbuilding, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Joint Base Langley-Eustis. With a number of small farms that offer fresh locally grown produce, and equestrian facilities, the community serves as a rural escape for the nearby cities of Hampton and Newport News. Predominantly rural until the late 20th century, the community has rapidly grown in recent decades in both population and commercialization. The first organized land battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Big Bethel, was fought on land in nearby Hampton as well as the area that later became Tabb. During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War, Yorktown was captured by the Union after the Battle of Yorktown. The York County area was then used as a base by the Union Army under General George B. McClellan to launch an unsuccessful attack on Richmond (the capital of the Confederacy).

Camp Patrick Henry is a decommissioned United States Army base which was located in Warwick County, Virginia. After World War II, the site was redeveloped as a commercial airport, and became part of City of Newport News in 1958 when the former City of Warwick and Newport News were politically consolidated as a single independent city. The airport is known in modern times as Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

Kiln Creek is a residential community located in Newport News and Yorktown, Virginia. It contains over 2,000 homes in 31 "villages", an elementary school, a golf course, and a recreational center. York High School is a York County School Division high school located in Yorktown in York County, Virginia, on U.S. Route 17 about 3 miles south of Yorktown. The school was opened in 1954 and currently enrolls over one thousand students. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's AA Bay Rivers District in Region I. The school is the home of the school division's television station and offers television production courses in the curriculum. The school is also the home of the York River Academy (a charter school that focuses on collaborative education teaching computer repair, cabling, and web design) and is the YCSD site for the International Baccalaureate Programme. York High School was once home to the most powerful high school radio station in the United States, WYCS 91.5.

Yorktown Refinery was an oil refinery in Virginia located alongside of the York River built in 1956. It is now used by Plains All American Pipeline LP as a rail and water oil terminal.The refinery used to be operated by Giant Industries and earlier operated by BP/Amoco. Giant Industries was acquired by Western Refining in 2007. The refinery could run high TAN crude oil (crude oil with a high content of naphthenic acids). The refining operations were shut down in the fall of 2010 and the refinery was later demolished.

On January 6, 2023, American school teacher Abby Zwerner was seriously injured when a six-year-old male student shot her while she was teaching in her classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The boy had brought from home, in his backpack, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol belonging to his mother. Zwerner's shooting provoked conversations about the culpability of young shooters and their parents, and comparisons with the 2000 killing of Kayla Rolland, also committed by a six-year-old student.

Woodside High School is one of six high schools in Newport News, Virginia. The Virginia Department of Education has accredited Woodside since the 2003–04 school year. The school has a twin school, Heritage High School, that was built simultaneously and designed by the same architects. Woodside High School is a Fully Accredited High School, and it met the Adequate Yearly Progress marks for the No Child Left Behind Act established by the Federal Government. Woodside is also the home of Newport News Public School's Center for the Arts and Communications Magnet Program, which offers specializations in music, dance, drama, creative writing, communications, and visual arts.

The United States Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) in Yorktown, Virginia, is one of eight major Coast Guard training facilities in the United States. The others are Training Center Petaluma, Training Center Cape May, Aviation Training Center, located in Mobile, Alabama, Leadership Development Center, located in New London, Connecticut, Maritime Law Enforcement Academy, located in Charleston, South Carolina, Special Missions Training Center, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and the Aviation Technical Training Center, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. TRACEN Cape May is the only U.S. Coast Guard Base used for Basic Military Training or "boot camp". TRACEN Yorktown, TRACEN Petaluma, Maritime Law Enforcement Academy, and the Aviation Technical Training Center are locations for Coast Guard's apprentice level "A" and advanced level "C" Schools.

The Moore House is a historic building located within Colonial National Historical Park, in York County, Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War, it was the site of negotiations for British General Charles Cornwallis's surrender at the Siege of Yorktown.
