The loss of dominant air carrier AirTran in 2012 and competition from low-cost airlines at Richmond International Airport have led to more than a 60% reduction in the annual number of passengers at PHF since 2011.

Major roads include U.S. Route 17 and State Route 134 (Hampton Highway, which continues as Magruder Boulevard in Hampton). The community was named for Mary Octavia Tabb who served as postmaster from 21 December 1893 until early 1910, as per National Archives and Records Administration. It is home to Tabb High School, one of four high schools in York County. It is also home to Tabb Middle School, Tabb Elementary School, and Mount Vernon Elementary School. Tabb is served by the US Postal Service ZIP code 23693. The ZIP code area had an estimated population of 23,807 in 2014. Tabb, Virginia uses the mailing address of Yorktown, Virginia. Predominantly rural until the late 20th century, the community has rapidly grown in recent decades in both population and commercialization. The first organized land battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Big Bethel, was fought on land in nearby Hampton as well as the area that later became Tabb. During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War, Yorktown was captured by the Union after the Battle of Yorktown. The York County area was then used as a base by the Union Army under General George B. McClellan to launch an unsuccessful attack on Richmond (the capital of the Confederacy).

Camp Patrick Henry is a decommissioned United States Army base which was located in Warwick County, Virginia. After World War II, the site was redeveloped as a commercial airport, and became part of City of Newport News in 1958 when the former City of Warwick and Newport News were politically consolidated as a single independent city. The airport is known in modern times as Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

York High School is a York County School Division high school located in Yorktown in York County, Virginia, on U.S. Route 17 about 3 miles south of Yorktown. The school was opened in 1954 and currently enrolls over one thousand students. Athletic teams compete in the Virginia High School League's AA Bay Rivers District in Region I. The school is the home of the school division's television station and offers television production courses in the curriculum. The school is also the home of the York River Academy (a charter school that focuses on collaborative education teaching computer repair, cabling, and web design) and is the YCSD site for the International Baccalaureate Programme. York High School was once home to the most powerful high school radio station in the United States, WYCS 91.5.

Yorktown Refinery was an oil refinery in Virginia located alongside of the York River built in 1956. It is now used by Plains All American Pipeline LP as a rail and water oil terminal.The refinery used to be operated by Giant Industries and earlier operated by BP/Amoco. Giant Industries was acquired by Western Refining in 2007. The refinery could run high TAN crude oil (crude oil with a high content of naphthenic acids). The refining operations were shut down in the fall of 2010 and the refinery was later demolished.

Dandy is an unincorporated community in York County, Virginia.

The Newport News Transportation Center is an Amtrak inter-city train station and intermodal transport hub in Newport News, Virginia. The station is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on Bland Boulevard between Warwick Boulevard and Interstate 64. The station was constructed to consolidate all of the region's public transport entities into one location and serve as the new southern terminus of the two daily round trips on the Virginia Peninsula branch of the Northeast Regional, which previously terminated at the old Newport News station 9 miles (14 km) to the south. An Amtrak Thruway motorcoach connection to Norfolk station effectively doubles the frequency between each station and Washington. A second, smaller station in downtown Newport News was also proposed but has been indefinitely postponed. The station has a high platform with space for eight cars.
