Old Main (Arizona State University)

Arizona State University (Arizona State or ASU) is a public research university in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Founded in 1885 as Territorial Normal School by the 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature, ASU is now one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the United States. It was one of about 180 "normal schools" founded in the late 19th century to train teachers for the rapidly growing public common schools. Some closed, but most steadily expanded their role and became state colleges in the early 20th century, then state universities in the late 20th century. One of three universities governed by the Arizona Board of Regents, ASU is a member of the Association of American Universities and classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity". ASU has nearly 145,000 students attending classes, with more than 62,000 students attending online, and 112,000 undergraduates and nearly 30,000 postgraduates across its five campuses and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona. ASU offers 350 degree options from its 17 colleges and more than 170 cross-discipline centers and institutes for undergraduates students, as well as more than 400 graduate degree and certificate programs.The Arizona State Sun Devils compete in 26 varsity-level sports in the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference and is home to over 1,100 registered student organizations. Sun Devil teams have won 165 national championships, including 24 NCAA trophies. 179 Sun Devils have made Olympic teams, winning 60 Olympic medals: 25 gold, 12 silver, and 23 bronze. As of January 2022, ASU reported that its faculty of more than 5,000 scholars included 5 Nobel laureates, 10 MacArthur Fellows, 10 Pulitzer Prize winners, 10 National Academy of Engineering members, 23 National Academy of Sciences members, 26 American Academy of Arts and Sciences members, 41 Guggenheim fellows, 157 National Endowment for the Humanities fellows, and 281 Fulbright Program American Scholars.

Matthews Hall is a building on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. Built in 1918, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The Palm Walk is a pedestrian mall located on Arizona State University's Tempe campus that is lined with one hundred and five Mexican fan palms. Running from the foot of the University bridge to the north, to the Student Recreation Complex to the south, the path runs for almost four-tenths of a mile. The path itself follows the old alignment of Normal Avenue, before it was incorporated into the expanding college's campus.

The Industrial Arts Building on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Arizona, later known as the Anthropology Building and now known as the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, was built in 1914. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The Administration/Science Building (Building 11), at 425 University Drive on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University, was built in 1908 or 1909 and was designed by D. W. Millard in the Queen Anne style influenced by Neoclassicism. The second-oldest building on the campus, it, along with Old Main and a third building no longer extant formed the first quad in what was then Arizona Territorial Normal School. It was originally called Science Hall. The building was remodeled several times and was used for a variety of purposes, but was scheduled for demolition in 1983. It was renovated and restored after it received historic status. Currently, it is the home of the University Club, a members-only institution open to faculty, staff, corporate and community members and parents of continuing students.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 under the name "Administration/Science Building". It is also listed on the Arizona Register of Historic Places.

Charles Trumbull Hayden Library, at 300 East Orange Mall on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University, was built in 1966 and was named for Charles Trumbull Hayden, founder of Tempe and the first president of the board of the Arizona Territorial Normal School, ASU's predecessor. Hayden Library is the largest facility on ASU's Tempe campus, and now houses millions of books and other research materials in the humanities and social sciences, including humanities in education. Over the course of the 20th century, Hayden Library has undergone expansions and renovations, including the addition of an underground plaza and entrance in 1989, designed by the original architects. A renovation was completed in 2020 by Ayers Saint Gross.

School of Sustainability is the first school in the United States dedicated to exploring the principles of sustainability. The school was established in 2006 at Arizona State University. The School offers a BA and BS in Sustainability, a BS in Sustainable Food Systems, a Master of Sustainability Solutions, Master of Sustainability Leadership, Executive Master of Sustainability Leadership, MS in Sustainable Food Systems, MA, MS, and PhD in Sustainability, and PhD in Sustainable Energy. It is located within the Global Futures Laboratory at the Arizona State University Tempe campus. In Fall 2016, the School of Sustainability expanded its BA and BS degree offerings to the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus located in Mesa, Arizona. As of May 2016, 947 students have graduated with degrees in Sustainability at ASU. Of those, 758 graduated with a bachelor's degree, 190 with a master's degree, and 42 with a PhD. In fall 2021, approximately 1,100 students were enrolled in sustainability programs at the School of Sustainability. The School of Sustainability works with other colleges at Arizona State University to offer a Minor in Sustainability, a BA in business with a Sustainability concentration, a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a Sustainability concentration, a Bachelor of Science in Public Service and Public Policy with a Sustainability concentration, a BS in Tourism Development and Management with a Sustainability Tourism concentration, and a Bachelor of Sustainability Engineering. The Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability, the Minor in Sustainability, the Master of Sustainability Leadership, the BA in Business and Sustainability, and the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a Sustainability Concentration may be taken through ASU Online, Arizona State University's online college.

Old St. Mary's Church – formerly Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and also known as "The Old Church: – at 230 East University Avenue in Tempe, Arizona, is a historic church at the built in 1903 and designed in the Romanesque Revival style by Father Severin Westhoff. It is the longest standing church in the Phoenix metropolitan area and served as a Catholic parish for the Tempe area until 1968, when it became home to the Arizona State University Newman Center. It currently serves as home to Mary College at ASU, a center for Catholic Studies formed in partnership between the University of Mary and Arizona State University, the Diocese of Phoenix, and the All Saints Catholic Newman Center. The Newman Center's offices and chapel stand adjacent to the historic church. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 under the name "Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church". It is the only example of Romanesque Revival architecture in the Tempe area, and one of only a few in Arizona.

The President's House is a building on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. It was built in 1907 to serve as the lodgings for the president of what was then known as the Tempe Normal School. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and currently houses the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, known as the writer's house.

The Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies was founded in 1960, on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University, and houses the world's largest university-based meteorite collection. The collection contains specimens from over 1,600 separate meteorite falls and finds, and is actively used internationally for planetary, geological and space science research. The Center also operates a meteorite museum which is open to the public. In 2021, the Center for Meteorite Studies was named in honor of Professor Peter R. Buseck.

The Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS) was established in 1981, by the Arizona Board of Regents as a state-wide, tri-university research unit that bridges the intellectual communities at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona. Located centrally on the campus of Arizona State University, ACMRS is charged with coordinating and stimulating interdisciplinary research about medieval and early modern literature and culture.

Sun Devil Gym is a 4,609-seat multi-purpose arena in Tempe, Arizona. It was home to the Arizona State University Sun Devils basketball team from 1953 until the Desert Financial Arena opened in 1974. The building is now known as Physical Education West and is used mostly for classrooms and events. Prior to its opening, the basketball team played at either College Gym (cap. 1,500) on the Tempe campus, or at the Mesa Civic Center.
