The Archdiocese of Freiburg im Breisgau (Latin Archidioecesis Friburgensis) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in Baden-Württemberg comprising the former states of Baden and Hohenzollern. The Archdiocese of Freiburg is led by an archbishop, who also serves as the metropolitan bishop of the Upper-Rhine ecclesiastical province for the suffragan dioceses of Mainz and Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Its seat is Freiburg Minster in Freiburg im Breisgau. The 14th Archbishop of Freiburg, Robert Zollitsch, followed his predecessor Oskar Saier, who served from 1978 to 2002. On May 30, 2014 Stephan Burger was elected by the Chapter as the new Archbishop of Freiburg. He was ordained as bishop on June 29, 2014.

The Corps Hubertia Freiburg is a fraternity (Studentenverbindung) in Freiburg, Germany. It was founded on October 29, 1868 and is one of 162 German Student Corps in Europe today. The Corps is a member of the Kösener Senioren-Convents-Verband (KSCV), the oldest federation of classical European fraternities with roots dating back to the 15th century and member fraternities across Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Latvia and Switzerland.Membership to the fraternity is open to honorable men studying at one of Freiburg's universities and based exclusively on personality, good moral standing, and strength of character. Members of the Corps Hubertia value and engage in the tradition of academic fencing duels as a way to sharpen and prove their character under pressure. Continuing a practice dating back into the 1700s, Hubertia's members wear the traditional Couleur, colored stripes, in green-gold-black. The fraternity teaches and expects tolerance from its members, stemming from diverse ethnic, national, religious and political backgrounds. Hubertia's members are often referred to as Huberten. Members of the fraternity controlled the forestry departments of Baden, the south-west of Germany, in a de facto monopoly from the late 1800s to the early 20th century. Many of the members today practice this heritage as passionate hunters in private and fraternity events.

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (German: Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung von Kriminalität, Sicherheit und Recht) is a non-university research institute located in Freiburg, Germany. The institute is part of the Max Planck Society and is conducting basic research into criminal law, criminology and public law. The Institute is currently headed by Jean-Louis van Gelder (Department of Criminology), Ralf Poscher (Department of Public Law) and Tatjana Hörnle (Department of Criminal Law). In 2019, the Institute had a total of 120 employees. The library comprises more than 500,000 titles and is one of the largest libraries in the area. Former directors are Albin Eser, Ulrich Sieber and Hans-Jörg Albrecht.

The Johanneskirche (Church of St. John) is a Roman Catholic church located in Freiburg im Breisgau. It was first opened in 1899 and is currently located in the Wiehre district. Around the church, further historic buildings were built. On the western side is the presbytery of the community next to a vocational school and to the north is the Lessingschule. At the same time as the Johanneskirche was being completed, the Protestant Christians built their own church near to Johanneskirche, the Christuskirche.

Holbeinpferd is the colloquial name of the sculpture of a horse (in German: Pferd) in the suburb Wiehre in Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany which is standing at the corner of Günterstal and Holbein streets. The concrete sculpture of a foal was created in 1936 by the sculptor Werner Gürtner. It is 1.90 m both long and high and weighs nearly 1 tonne. It became famous for the fact that since about 1980 it is frequently painted at night.

The Centre for European Policy (German: cep | Centrum für Europäische Politik ) (cep) is a German think tank whose task it is to evaluate the European Union's draft laws and legislation on the basis of ordoliberal free market criteria. Established in 2006 under the umbrella of the Stiftung Ordnungspolitik foundation, the cep is based in Freiburg. It is headed by Lüder Gerken, chairman of the executive board of the Stiftung Ordnungspolitik and the Friedrich-August-von-Hayek Foundation. Members of the board of trustees include Roman Herzog, Leszek Balcerowicz, Frits Bolkestein, Udo Di Fabio, Jürgen Stark, Holger Steltzner and Hans Tietmeyer.

The Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung was founded in May 1999 to mark the 100th birthday of the Nobel Prize winner Friedrich August von Hayek. The foundation has its seat in Freiburg im Breisgau (South Germany) and is run by Dr. habil Lüder Gerken. Sponsors are Wüstenrot & Württembergische AG. Its aim is, in its own words, to strengthen and promote the basic principles of a liberal economic and social order at both national and international level, as expounded by Friedrich August von Hayek. Hayek Prize The Friedrich-August-von-Hayek-Stiftung grants the International Prize and the Journalism Prize every two years. These prizes are awarded to personalities who have distinguished themselves through exemplary and extraordinary achievements in the establishment, development or promotion of a liberal economic and social order in Germany, in Europe, or in other parts of the world. The Zinnfigurenklause is a private museum in Freiburg im Breisgau that depicts the history of the Schwabentor in south-eastern Germany.

The Schwabentor (English Swabian Gate), also called Obertor in the Middle Ages, is the more recent of the two remaining city gates of the medieval defensive wall of Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. In 2022, it was suggested to become world heritage.

The Walter Eucken Institut is a German ordo-liberal economic think tank based in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Institute was founded in 1954, four years after the death of economist Walter Eucken, by a number of his friends and pupils. The Institute's creation was supported by Ludwig Erhard, then Secretary of Economic Affairs and later Chancellor of West Germany. Honorary Presidents have included Nobel laureates Friedrich Hayek and James M. Buchanan. Since September 2010, the institute is directed by Lars Feld.The Walter Eucken Institute's research interest is constitutional and institutional questions in economics and social sciences, including preserving and developing a free market order, classical liberal ideas and their institutional realisation, and the economic constitution of the European Union.

The Breisach Gate (German: Breisacher Tor) is a city gateway of Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located at the boundary of the old city at the crossing of Rempartstraβe and Gartenstraβe. The edifice was listed as a cultural monument of special significance in accordance with paragraph 12 of the Monument Protection Law.

Zum roten Bären (translation: The Red Bear) is a hotel and restaurant in Freiburg, Germany; it has a claim to be the oldest hotel in Germany and Europe. The foundations of the hotel predate the founding of the town of Freiburg by the dukes of the House of Zähringen in 1120. Records show that site of Zum roten Bären was already used as an inn in the 12th century. The first landlord for whom there is written documentation is Hanmann Bienger, whose name was listed in a land register of the nearby monastery of Adelhausen in March 1387. Many of the landlords were also court officials and councilmen of the city of Freiburg and often also guild masters. For some time, the guild hall of the shoemakers was located at Zum Roten Bären, as can be seen in one of the windows of Freiburg Cathedral. After French soldiers damaged an older building during the Rhine campaign of 1713, the building visible today was built by landlord Andreas Pflug in the Baroque style and completed in 1718. Parts of the external walls and cellars remain from the original 12th-century building.Current managers Christoph Glück and Christian Böhler—who bought the hotel in 2017—are the 51st landlords.
