Mount Eden

Maungawhau / Mount Eden is a scoria cone and Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountain) in the Mount Eden suburb of Auckland, New Zealand.

The Auckland volcanic field is an area of monogenetic volcanoes covered by much of the metropolitan area of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, located in the North Island. The approximately 53 volcanoes in the field have produced a diverse array of maars (explosion craters), tuff rings, scoria cones, and lava flows. With the exception of Rangitoto, no volcano has erupted more than once, but the other eruptions lasted for various periods ranging from a few weeks to several years. Rangitoto erupted several times and recently twice; in an eruption that occurred about 600 years ago, followed by a second eruption approximately 50 years later. The field is fuelled entirely by basaltic magma, unlike the explosive subduction-driven volcanism in the central North Island, such as at Mount Ruapehu and Lake Taupō. The field is currently dormant, but could become active again.

Eden Garden is a garden in Mt Eden, Auckland set in 2 hectares of former quarry land. It was established in 1964 and is open to the public for an admission fee. Eden Garden was donated to the people of New Zealand in 1965 and is managed by The Eden Garden Society, Inc., a not-for-profit society.The garden's many collections of plants include what is reputed to be the largest collection of camellias in New Zealand, vireyas (tropical rhododendrons) some of which are always in bloom, Japanese maples, magnolias, hibiscus, bromeliads, native trees, interesting rock formations, waterfalls, and a spectacular perennial garden. In recent years the annual spring Eden Garden Tulip Festival, held over a weekend in late August/early September at least since 2011, has been one of the biggest and best in Auckland. There is always something of interest in bloom. This little oasis close to the heart of Auckland city is described by New Zealand's bestgardening.com website as "one of the loveliest and most tranquil inner city gardens around."

Government House, Auckland is the secondary official residence of the governor-general of New Zealand located in Auckland, New Zealand. The property is situated in the Auckland suburb of Mount Eden on Mountain Road. The building was erected in the 1920s as a private residence for Frank Mappin. Its construction required the demolition of another structure from the late-19th century. The Mappin family continued to own the residence until 1962, when they gave it to the Crown. The property has served as the official residence of the governor-general since 1969, following the departure of the Mappin family from property. Government House, Auckland is the not the first property to serve as viceregal official residence in Auckland. The first Government House built in Auckland was completed in 1841, and was used as the residence for the governor of New Zealand until it burned down in 1848. Several other residences in Auckland were used to house the governor before Old Government House was completed in 1856. The present Government House replaced Old Government House as the governor-general's residence in Auckland in 1969.

Mt Eden Congregational Church, also known as St James Church, is a historic former church in Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand. Constructed in 1900 to a neo-classical design from Mitchell and Watt for a Congregational church it later renamed to St James Church following the 1969 union of Congregational churches with the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. In the 21st century the church fell into disrepair and as the church could not fund the repairs the building was sold, later being developed into residential apartments.

The Faculty of Education and Social Work (Māori: Te Kura Akoranga me Te Tauwhiro Tangata) is the educational faculty of the University of Auckland. It was created in September 2004 through the merger of the University of Auckland and the Auckland College of Education. Since 2018, the Faculty has been headed by Dean Mark Barrow.

Te Pou Hawaiki (also known as Epsom Avenue or Ōwhatihue) is a volcano in the Auckland volcanic field in New Zealand. It was a small, low scoria cone south-east of Mount Eden that was quarried away in the early 20th century.

Auckland Metropolitan College was a state coeducational alternative secondary school located in the suburb of Mount Eden in Auckland, New Zealand. It was closed in 2001 by the Minister of Education.

The Colonial Ammunition Company (CAC) was an ammunition manufacturer in Auckland, New Zealand. Its predecessor, Whitney & Sons, was established by John Whitney with government encouragement in 1885 during the Russian Scare. Whitney later recruited investors to expand his factory in 1888. The other shareholders were Messrs Greenwood and Batley, of Leeds (owners of the Greenwood & Batley cartridge company); T. Hall, Esq., of Mount Morgan; J. D' Arcey, Esq.; Captain de Lusada, R.N.; J. Clarke, Esq.; and T.Y. Cartwright of Notts. They formed the Colonial Ammunition Company, the first ordnance manufacturer in Australasia. Components were made in New Zealand and Australia, shipped to England, and then assembled at the Greenwood & Batley plant in Leeds. The finished cartridges were then shipped back to Australia and New Zealand for sale. It later expanded in other business directions from 1925 on. In the Second World War, it was New Zealand's only industrial manufacturer of ammunition (having temporarily increased its workforce from 230 to 900), with production in countries like Australia having long since overtaken the small size of the New Zealand market for ammunition.

The Colonial Ammunition Company Shot Tower, also known as the Mount Eden shot tower was an early 20th century shot tower located in Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand and listed as a Category I building by Heritage New Zealand. The shot tower was originally owned by the Colonial Ammunition Company and was in use until the 1980s. In 2001 the rest of the buildings were demolished but the tower was spared due to popular support for it. In 2023 the shot tower was torn down over concerns it could fall over.

The Almorah Rock Forest (also known as the Epsom Rock Forest) is a lava rock forest located on the northeastern slope of Maungawhau / Mount Eden, in Auckland, New Zealand. It is one of the few remaining lava rock forests in the region.

The Crystal Palace Theatre is an early 20th century theatre located in Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand listed as a Category II building by Heritage New Zealand.
